THE EDITOR 1 S CORNER

The big problem of an editor of such a journal as ours is to have material available that will be of interest to each category of collecting. To accomplish this depends a great deal on the efforts of our members in putting in writing the knowledge they have gleaned over the years. So far your editor has been blessed with much assistance by many members, but there is still room for improvement. As far as I am concerned the goal is limitless, so keep up the good

· work.

In keeping with the spirit of doing better things, I hope to present to you late in September the Convention issue . It will contain articles of interest to practically every western cover collector. With your cooperation and the wherewith-all to publish it, it could well become the standard for all future issues. I expect to present a plan at the general assembly in October for your earnest consideration. In the meantime , if you have any constructive ideas about improving WE, be prepared to expound them at the meeting. WE is our most important undertaking. It is our only way of communicating knowledge to our membership that is scattered all over this big country of ours.

And now a few words about the convention in October. This will be the first chance to express yourselves personally as to what you expect of the Western Cover Society. Then you will be able to see the finest display of western covers ever shown anywhere. It will cover every category of western cover collecting without duplication. Selections will be made by a committee of experts without prejudice, as the exhibit will be non-competitive. Already many reknowned collections have been made available including the great Wiltsee collection at the Wells Fargo Bank of San Francisco . Then too there will be the pleasure of meeting your fellow collector face to face. And above all we will have fun; the fun of bidding, the fun of trading, the fun of kidding. You can-not afford to miss this memorable occasion.

THE POSTAL HI STORY OF NEW M EXICO TERRITORY

(Part III)

By Sheldon H. Dike

I. Introduction

Page 3

This is the third in a series presenting data on the post office s and known postmarks of New Mexico Territory. Since it .is desired that this series be completed in a total of five installments 1 this and the r.emafning two t o c ome will contain an increased numb er of data pages. Therefore, in defer en ce t o the budget available 1 the historical notes will be kept to a minimum.

The most interesting recent development is a new type EDDY turned up by N. L. Persson. This is surprising because of the very large number of covers seen from this town, and it is possible that this new type was previously overlooked. Please check your Eddy's and send in for recording any of the new Type S's you have.

Since the last installment 1 several other. new town types have appeared, as well. as changes i n earliest and latest dates of others, all reported below.

a. Bringhurst's was established in Rio Arriba County. This post office was at or near the present site of Las Vegas, Nevada 1 which was then a part of New Mexico Territory . The postmaster appointment record lists this office as "county unknown", but at least one post office list seen for 1859lists it (erroneously) in Bernalillo County.

As was mentioned previously 1 duri ng the military occupation period (1846-50) mails were carried by an infrequent military express and by various traders and travellers. There were also apparently some contracts between the military and certain freighters which included provisions for carrying mail. However, it is apparent that mail service to and from New Mexico was not satisfactory under these arrangements. The following appeared in the Santa Fe Republican under date of July 18, 1848:

3

WESTERN EXPRESS - JUNE, 19 58 Page 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------

"Great inconvenience has been experienced all this year for the want of regular mails 1 and now the season of the year is such that we may expect them, if ever 1 to arrive more regular 1 but they do not, as it now has been over two months since we have received one word of official news from the States; but we hope that Congress this season will make some provision for the more speedy and certain transmission of them. The public as well as private interests have suffered much heretofore from this evil, and it looks hard that men engaged in the service of the ir country, in a foreign land I and far from home 1 should be deprived of the gratification and pleasure of hearing from their friends because it would cost the Government a little money to send mails regularly and frequently -- We hope Congress will act promptly and efficiently, and establish a line of communication so that we shall not be cut off for months without having anything either from our Government or friends. We have no news from the · United States later than we have published heretofore."

One of the most famous of the early traders who carried mail between Santa Fe and Missouri was an intrepid gentleman by the name of Francois Xavier Aubry. He first entered the Santa Fe trade in 1847, and an account of his adventures is contained in Ref . 1. Since this reference is not readily available I the following is a brief resume pertaining to his early trips over the Santa Fe Trail on many of which he carried the mail.

It was usual in those years for Santa Fe traders to make one trip per year between Missouri and New Mexico, as it usually required the entire favorabletravelling period between spring and fall to accomplish a single trip. However, in his first year as a Santa Fe trader r Aubry decided to make two trips to New Mexico instead of the customary one . He informed the citizens of St. Louis that he was about to depart for Santa Fe by placing a notice in the Daily Missouri Republican on April 17 , 184 7. He also stated in this notice that he would be happy to transport all letters and papers addressed to Santa Fe if they were left at the Republican office on or before April 20. This was a welcome announcement since the postal service to New Mexico at that time was sporadic. On April 20th 1 he set out for the town of Kansas (now Kansas City 1 Missouri) and he arranged for his goods to be freighted by another trader from this point on April 27th. On April 30th Aubry left Kansas with the mail and arrived in Santa Fe in early July 1 sold all of his goods and by the 28th of July he was on his way back to "the States" 1 again carrying some mail. He reached Independence about August 31st ahead of his wagons. The journey took approximately 34 days, during the last four of which he travelled 300 miles. He again left western Missouri on September 2 5 and 1 after some difficulty with Indians 1 he reached Santa Fe on October 29th, well in advance of the winter season. He disposed of all his merchandise by the latter part of December and was again ready to leave for Independence and St . Louis.

Prior to his departure, he announced in the Santa Fe Republican on November 27 , 1847 that he was planning to leave Santa Fe for Missouri about Christmas Day and would be glad to take along all pa·pers and letters destined for "the States . " He declared that it was his intention to cover the distance in 18 days .

--------------------------------------------------------------------The Republican stated that it was certain he would accomplish this , because "he is one of nature ' s most persevering children . " He left Santa Fe early on the morning of December 22, 1847 and was accompanied by five men who planned to travel with him. However they could not keep up with his fast pace and they dropped behind, the last one becoming exhausted about sixty miles west of Council Grove. During this trip he was attacked by Mexican robbers, lost a half day because of Indian trouble, experienced four days of very severe cold weather, lost half a day because of a severe snow storm , and killed three mules by hard riding. During the last three days he rode at the rate of 100 miles; per day and he arrived in Inde pendence on January 5, 1848, just 14 days from Santa Fe. This time surpassed his best previous record by 10-1/2 days and was the quickest trip on record be tween these two points. He immediately went to St. Louis to purchase new goods for the New Mexican market,. arriving there on January 17 1 1848. With the idea of preventing further difficulties with the Indians on future trips, he wrote to the War Department on February 16th requesting that they lend him a six- pound cannon from the St . Louis Arsenal to protect his property enroute to New Mexico. On March 7th 1 the Secretary of War replied that "in view of probable contingencies, the loan request cannot properly be authorized." But Aubry did not wait for this reply and left St. Louis for Independence in order to make preparations for an early start across the Plains .

The w bstern Expositor of Independence announced on March 11 , 1848 that Aubry intend~d to leave from Independence within the next few days with a train of 15 wagons . He departed on March 16th and on the morning of April 21st he arrived in Santa Fe ahead of his wagons, which arrived a few days later. Most traders were~still in Missouri at this early date and hence he had no difficulty in disposing of his goods. Even before his wagons reached Santa Fe, he began to make arra gements for a second fast trip to Independence. This time he announced his intention of making the journey to Independence in the seemingly impossible tim of ten days . The Santa Fe Republican stated: "We have no doubt that he will; for if energy and perseverance can accomplish a feat of that kind, Aubry is the man." He galloped out of Santa Fe on May 19th accompanied by 6 men, but hi companions broke down from exhaustion before they had covered 300 miles. He ade the rest of the trip alone, reaching Fort Mann in 3 days and 21 hours . Duri g this trip he ki-lled three horses and two mules by hard riding 1 he walked abou 40 miles, he was attacked by a band of Indians, and for three days he was with6ut food . He rode into Independence before dawn on May 28th having left Santa Fe eight days and ten hours earlier . This represented an average of nearly a 100 miles a day during the whole trip and a betterment of his previous record by about 5- 1/2 days. The Missouri newspapers were full of praise and complimented his tremendous energy and unparalleled endurance. He proceeded to St . Louis and purchased a new quantity of merchandise for the third time in 1848. He set out again for Santa Few with a train of 30 wagons, arriving there ahead of his teams on August 5 . The Santa Fe Republican recorde d under date of August 8 that "this gentleman travels with a rapidity almost supernatural . " On August 9th, the Republican nicknamed him "the telegraph" ~ Under date of August 3 0, 1 84 8, they discussed the forthcoming presidential election to be held on the 7th of November and indicated that over two million voters throughout the country would record their votes , and that the results would be t e legraphed throughout the country so that "by the next morning (the people would know) with tolerable certainty whom the nation has chosen." They then went on to state: "We hope that Mr. F . X. Aubry will arrange his business so as to be at Independence when the news is

Page 8: Western Cover Society | Western Express July 1958€¦ · 1 2 California Historical Society 1 Jackson & Laguna Sts. 1 San Francisco. Open to the public Oct. lOth-12th, 10 A. M. to

WESTERN EXPRESS - JUNE, 1958 Page 7 --------------------------------------------------------------------telegraphed there, in order to place the City of Santa Fe and New Mexico on an equal footing with those who have already the benefit of the telegraph line of communication. We think that by this arrange ment, we would learn the results of the election in little less t han no time, or within one-hundred hours from the time it was telegraphed in the State s 1 for with our telegr.aphiC line there. is no danger of wires breaking and we are more secure in our a rrangements than Morse's invention . ..

Aubry's supreme riding effort was still to come . This time he decided to travel alone . He stated tha t this trip would require fewer days than any previous attempt , but he was unwilling to make any prediction as to the exact number of days he expected to spend in reaching Independence . He completed all of his ar rangements by the 12th of September . He was entrusted with a letter dated on this day written by someone in Santa Fe to the editors of the St. Louis Reveille which stated: "Allow me to introduce to you the man to whom the telegraph is a fool . He leaves here this morning very early, a nd I write this letter the night before . I think he will be in St. Louis suddenly . .. The departure of Aubry on this trip was of sufficient importance that the Santa Fe Republican issued an extra edition on September 12th which was given to Aubry to carry to "the States . 11 In this issue it stated: 11 Mr . F. X. Aubry who has this moment left our office and who has just informed us that he has t o leave for the U. States in a few moments; therefore we strike off a few items of the latest dates and news about town, etc. for the benefit of our exchanges in the States, as we are informed by him that his business compels him to reach the States as soon as he possibly can."

In the gray dawn of September 12th Aubry left Santa Fe on his solo ride to Independence at a swinging gallop. He raced down the mountains toward the great plains "in the yellow morning sun and under the slant rays of a yellow moon... He rode eastward at a terrific pace and obtained fresh horses from passing wagon trains and at Fort Mann~ Council Grove, and other places where he had stationed them. His favorite mount was a yellow mare named "Dolly" , and during one stretch she carried him about 200 miles in 26 hours . He rode continuously day a nd night. For nearly 600 miles the trail was muddy and he rode through a driving rain for 24 consecutive hours . During t his trip , he had essentially no sleep , ate but s ix me als 1

broke down six horses , and walked 20 miles·. He was also forced to swim most of the streams which were swollen by the heavy rains. On the night of September 17th "his foaming horse half ran, half staggered .. into Independence. He had made the trip in only five days and 16 hours! This represented an average rate of 140 miles per day.

This spectacular trip from Santa Fe . to Independence was wide ly acclaimed in all the newspapers of the time. It has since been considered the fastest and most remarkable long-distance ride ever made ~ The newspapers of the day described the details of his journey under such headlines as "Unprecendented Feat", .. Most Extraordinary Trip", and "Extraordinary Feat. 11 The Daily Missouri Republican stated: "The performance seems almost incredible. 11 The Wee kly Reveille asserted: "The extraordinary feat of this gentleman . . . transcends the history of traveling." At a later time Alexander Majors, who had extensive experience with horses and riders, stated: "The man who attempted to ride 800 miles in the time he did took his life in his hands. There is perhaps not one man in a million who could have lived to finish such a journey . 11 Aubry's record stands to this day for non- mechanized travel.

Aubry left St. Louis on September 26th and continued in the Missouri- New Mexico trade during 184 8 , but made no more record -breaking trips . In 184 9 and 50 he devoted his energy to trading with Chihuahua and Texas . On one of these trips he left Santa Fe on December 1 , 1849, with 2 0 large wagons and 2 50 mules. He travelled by way of El Paso del Norte and over the trail located by Whiting and Smith ,. reaching San Antonio on January 12, 1850 . During the fall of 1850 he made another trip from Santa Fe to Texas and later resumed his mercantile activities between Missouri and Santa Fe during the early territorial years of 1851-52. He later ventured into the trade between Santa Fe and California. His journal of these years makes fascinating reading. On many of these trips he endured severe hardships . On one such trip he was forced to eat his favorite mare 11Dolly 11 in order to save himself from starvation. On August 18, 1854, he returned to Santa Fe,. became involved in a tri.vial quarrel , and was fatally stabbed. He was buried the following afternoon in Santa Fe .

FORT LARAMIE POSTAL HISTORY

By Harry L. Fine

The first post office at Fort Laramie was established on March 14, 1850. This was during the period when Fort Laramie was located in unorganized territory,. also known as Indian Country. In the 1930's a Fort Laramie O.R . dated June o£.1851 turned up. The "0" was not clear and it was thought to be C.R. Postal history students decided it was meant for CentFal Route. Sometime later another cover with a elear "0" turned up and it was decided this meant Oregon Route . It was discovered that the postal guide for 1851 listed Fort Laramie in the Territory of Oregon . Further investigation disclosed that it was attached to Clackamas County, Oregon, by the Post Office Department for administrative purposes. The late Corwith Wagner indicated that there are nine different strikes known of the Fort Laramie 0 . R.

Nebraska Territory, Dakota Territory and Wyoming Territory covers are all quite rare and are known to exist in a variety of markings. No example of the Fort Laramie, Idaho Territory, marking has been found.

My own interest in Fort Laramie came as the result of the M. T . marking . This marking was thought to be for Montana Territory, but there was no factual evidence to substantiate this thinking. Fort Laramie was actually never in Montana Territory 1 but with indefinite boundary lines some postal history students felt it was quite easy for those in charge at Fort Laramie to assume they became part of Montana Territory on May 26th, 1864 . Montana Territory was taken from Idaho Territory on that day. After consideration through corres.-:pondence I thought that Fort Laramie might have been designated c.s a supervisory post office for Montana. There were no post offices in Eastern Montana during the time travel was heavy on the Bozeman Trail, or for that matter no post offices were established until 1877 . Fort Laramie was the logical point to receive and d isperse Eastern Montana mail, or for those on the Boze man trail.

The Bozeman Trail started at Fort Laramie, went north and then west to the goldfields of Bannock and Virginia City. Travel was very heavy during the time this route was used. The use was discontinued on November 6, 1868, when the treaty was signed with the Indians . After considerable research and correspondence I received the following information dated June 5, 1957 from Mr . Xenophon P. Smith, Librarian, Post Office Library, Washington 2 5, D . C . ;

"For the year 1865, the Official Register shows Fort Laramie as a Post Office in Dakota Territory , Idaho Territory and Montana Territory . L. S . Schuyder is shown as postmaster in each listing ."

While the above information may not answer all the questions regarding the M. T. marking,. it does give us something factual .

The territorial changes of Fort Laramie are as follows: In unorganized Territory until May 30 1 1854 May 3 0, 1854 to March 3, 1863 Nebraska Territory

: March 3·,. 186~ to" May 2 6, 1864 Idaho· Territory May 261 1864 to July 29 1 1868 Dakota Territory July 2 9 I 1868 to July 10, 1890 Wyoming Territory From July 10,. 1890 - State of Wyoming

The late Corwith Wagner was very much interested in Fort Laramie . It was my pleasure and good fortune to have had considerable correspondence with him before he passed away in August, 1957. Mr . Wagner had twenty-seven Fort Laramie covers in his possession. He owned three of the four known Fort Laramie M. T . covers. His collection of the M. T. covers included the two examples 1

a single circle dated as early as June of 1865 and the double circle with the three cent 1869 pictorial.

It is my hope to continue on with the postal history of Fort Laramie and that other interested students will write to me on the matter. The historical . background of Fort Laramie has been published by many authors. It is a most interesting story and certainly should be read by every western postal history student. Mr. David L. Hieb 1 the present Superintendent of the Fort Laramie National Monument at Fort Laramie 1 Wyoming t wrote a most interesting booklet on Fort Laramie for the National Park Service. This booklet sells at 2 5 cents and can be purchased from the Supt . of Documents , Washington, D.C. For . those who would like to read a more detailed account of Fort Laramie may I suggest the book 1 "Fort Laramie and the Pageant of the West" by L. R. Hafen and F. M. Young. This book is published by the Arthur H. Clark Company of Glendale, California.

I am indebted to the following for material and information contained in this article:
