The E Street Band’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Drummer Max Weinberg and his tour, Max Weinberg’s Jukebox, will be mak - ing a stop at the Paramount Hudson Valley Theater on Saturday, June 8th. Tickets are available now at the Paramount box office.

The Jukebox tour comes fresh off of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s “The River Tour” 2016-17. It’s geared towards the small venue and on an inter - active experience where the audience chooses the set list from a list of over 200 classic rock songs for Weinberg’s four-piece band to perform, much like a jukebox.

This unique approach allows Weinberg to connect and perform in a very unique way. The audience has the option to choose hits from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

Weinberg is best known for his role as the drummer for the E Street Band, which he joined in 1974. He joined at the same time as pianist Roy Bittan, and the new lineup of the E Street Band went on to

RHIANNON GIDDENS RHIANNON GIDDENS C OMES TO R IDGEFIELD & C ROTON Recipient of a 2017 MacArthur

Genius Grant, Rhiannon Giddens is the co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning string band Caro - lina Chocolate Drops, in which she also plays banjo and fiddle. Her two solo albums, the Grammy Award nominated Tomorrow is My Turn (2015) and Freedom Highway (2017) masterfully blend American musical genres like gos - pel, jazz, blues, and country, showcasing her extraordinary emotional range and dazzling vocal prowess. Giddens received the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for “Singer of the Year” and has won the Steve Martin Prize for Excel - lence in Bluegrass and Banjo. Gid - dens, who studied opera at Ober - lin, made her acting debut with a recurring role on the television drama Nashville , playing the role of Hanna Lee “Hallie” Jordan, a young social worker with “the voice of an angel.” See her per - form live on stage at The Ridge - field Playhouse Wednesday, June 20th at 8pm as part of the Moun - tain Dew Country & Bluegrass Series. Opening act will be Amy - thyst Kiah, a Southern gothic, alt- country blues singer/songwriter based out of Johnson City, Ten - nessee.

She will also be perfroming at this year’s Clearwater Festival, which takes place on June 16th and 17th on the banks of the Hudson River at beautiful Croton Point Park.

Rhiannon Giddens began gain - ing recognition as a solo artist when she stole the show at the T Bone Burnett–produced Another Day, Another Time concert at New York City’s Town Hall in 2013. Her elegant bearing, pro - digious voice, and fierce spirit that brought the audience to its feet that night is also abundantly evident on Giddens’ critically acclaimed solo debut, the

Grammy Award nominated album, Tomorrow is My Turn . Gid - dens’ follow-up album Freedom Highway was released in Feb - ruary, 2017. It includes 9 original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, “Bir - mingham Sunday” and Staple Singers’ well-known “Freedom Highway,” from which the album takes its name. Giddens’ recent televised performances include The Late Show , Austin City Limits , Later… with Jools Holland , and both CBS Saturday and Sunday Morning , among numerous other notable media appearances. She performed for President Obama and the First Lady on a White House Tribute to Gospel, along with Aretha Franklin and Emmy - lou Harris. Giddens duets with country superstar Eric Church on his powerful anti-racism song “Kill a Word,” which reached Top 10 on country radio; the two have performed the song on The Tonight Show and the CMA Awards , among other programs. In awarding Giddens the “genius” grant, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation praised the singer for “reclaiming African American contributions to folk

and country music and bringing to light new connections between music from the past and the pre - sent.”

Rhiannon’s Ridgefield opening act Amythyst Kiah’s commanding stage presence is only matched by her raw and powerful vocals — a deeply moving, hypnotic sound that stirs echoes of a distant and restless past. A graduate of East Tennessee State University, she studied old time music and music performance, and it proved to be a pivotal moment in her life as she transformed from a long-time closet musician into a well- rounded, captivating performer.

Stella Blue’s Band has been lighting up the New York area with the music of the Grateful Dead for nearly a decade. Stella features dynamic jams with lots of improvisation, seeking to fulfill the musical magic that the Dead achieved. They play tunes from all stages of the Dead’s 30-year run, capturing the unique sound and adventurous spirit of the music. With love and reverence for the music, they recreate that special feeling and community unique to Grateful Dead Shows. Individually or as a band, we’ve played with Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Melvin Seals, Jeff Chimenti, Joe Russo, John Kadlecik and many others.

Westchester’s own Stella Blue’s Band will celebrate five years of honoring the music of the Grate - ful Dead with a special anniver - sary performance at Garcia’s on Friday, June 8th.

Members of Stella Blue’s Band graced the Garcia’s stage on June 5, 2013 in what would begin a five year, over 50 show-plus his - tory with the Garcia’s and Capitol Theatre family. What was first a Grateful Dead tribute act has quickly become the crown gem of Garcia’s, keeping the music of the Grateful Dead alive for the next generation of fans.

“[It] seems like Stella and Gar - cia’s have grown up together except it seems like we’re both waiting for the grown-ups to show up and ask us what exactly we’re doing in their living room and ‘what is that strange music you’re playing?’” says guitarist Steve Liesman.

Having played The Capitol Theatre stage with Phil Lesh, founding bassist for the Grateful Dead, and Melvin Seals of the Jerry Garcia Band, Stella Blue’s Band has helped ensure Port Chester’s place as the East Coast mecca of the Dead. Together, Gar - cia’s and Stella Blue’s Band have established a relationship that ensures the music never stops.

“Garcia’s has become home for us and the staff at The Capitol and Garcia’s are part of our music family. I like to call it the Moth - ership. It’s been an amazing 5- year run” adds vocalist Marc Loponte.

Immortal are back! The wintry kings of Norwegian black metal have returned after another ancient frozen slumber, but they aren’t exactly the same as you might have remembered! If you aren’t familiar with the legendary metal act, here is a brief recap. Immortal was founded in Norway in 1991 by front man and bassist Abbath Doom Occulta and guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta. The pair worked on the music together and if I remember right, Demonaz wrote all or most of the bands lyrics. Their debut record Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism was released way back in 1992

In 1996, drummer Horgh joined the band and the three-piece of Abbath, Demonaz and Horgh released the Blizzard Beasts LP in 1997. Later that year, Demonaz unfortunately developed a severely bad case tendonitis, so bad that he to give up guitar playing. He could no longer record or perform with the band, but he continued to write material and began to manage the band behind the scenes. The band didn’t miss a beat, starting with 1999’s At the Heart of Winter , which is one of this writer’s personal favorite records of all time. Abbath handled vocals, guitar and bass for that record and eventually settled on playing guitar for live shows. Immortal rose to prominence in the extreme metal underground, releasing albums and touring the world, all the while with Demonaz still officially being part of the band, but completely out of the spotlight.

Immortal unfortunately split up in 2003, but they thankfully reformed for a brief reunion tour in 2007. They stayed together and eventually recorded a new studio record, 2009’s All Shall Fall and hit the road. That was their last studio release.

Tragically in 2015 Abbath left the band, putting the end to one the most beloved and unique of Norway’s black metal acts. To make matters worse, Abbath began a legal battle with Demonaz over the band name, Immortal. Demonaz, who kept the drum god Horgh on his side, legally retained ownership of the band name. Abbath then went on to record and release an excellent self-titled solo record on his own in 2016. But Demonaz and Horgh claimed that the songs on the Abbath solo record contained material that was “stolen” by Abbath, as these were songs that were to be on the next Immortal record. But now, in 2018, Immortal are back again! Demonaz is writing music and lyrics as well, but now triumphantly once again playing guitar and now handling vocals as well. Horgh is by his side blasting away on the drum kit and their newly finished LP, Northern Chaos Gods will be released via

Nuclear Blast Records on July 6th. I have only heard the record once so far as of this writing, but I thought it is an absolute monster! The production on the record, courtesy of longtime Immortal ally Peter Tatgren of the band Hypocrisy, is far dirtier and grittier than anything Immortal has released in decades. Demonaz’s vocals are certainly more aggressive and shrieking than Abbath, the album as a whole is far more extreme than I expected. It definitely reminded of the Blizzard Beasts era of the band. I’m anxious to hear it again as well as looking forward to seeing this revamped version of Immortal in concert.

The new Ghost record, Prequelle, hits stores on June 1st via Loma Vista Records. The band recorded this album last year in Stockholm, Sweden. Ghost recently played a sold-out show at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY where they debuted four new songs off their upcoming album in addition to debuting their expanded band. Ghost now features eight full time musicians in their revamped lineup.

Unfortunately, Ghost vocalist and band leader Tobias Forge seems to have now retired the very popular Papa character, which was a real disappointment for me. Tobias Forge played the entire two-hour show at the Capitol in his new Cardinal Copia character. The cool black and white skull face paint worn by Papa in the “evil Pope” costume has now been replaced by a rubber mask making this character literally look like an old shriveled European man, it just didn’t have the same magic for me personally. If you are looking to see what this new character looks like, watch the new video “Rats”.

At the end of their 2017 tour for their The Solace System EP Holland’s premier female fronted symphonic metal act Epica released a Japanese only covers EP titled Epica vs Attack on Titan . This was a Japanese exclusive that featured metaled up theme songs of the anime series Attack on Titan . Well, Epica have now announced that the previous Japan exclusive EP will be released worldwide as of July 20th. The EP features eight new tracks, half of which are instrumentals. I’m not sure what to think of this release, but it doesn’t matter to me, I will buy anything this band puts out.

I had the chance to speak to legendary metal front man Lizzy Borden recently about his new album My Midnight Things . The LP will be released on June 15th, 2018 via Metal Blade Records. This is Lizzy’s first new studio offering in more than a decade and I have to say, it’s quite a solid record! Vocally Lizzy has never sounded better, his sonic wail is as sharp and as crisp as ever! The album features ten brand new tracks. The album will be available in a number of configurations including a limited edition with bonus tracks.

German metal goddess Doro Pesch will release her new studio record on August 17th via Nuclear Blast. The album, Forever Warriors, Forever United will be a double album and feature a whopping twenty new studio numbers. Quite a few guest stars

Former Scorpions guitarist, the legendary Uli Jon Roth is at Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY on July 6th. Former Skid Row vocalist Sebastian Bach is at the Chance on July 8th. Armored Saint is at The Chance on July 10th. Slayer, Lamb of God, Anthrax, Testament and Napalm Death are at the Times Union Center in Albany on August 1st. Dio Disciples return to the Chance on August 3rd. Black metal gods Venom Inc and the metal superstar group Metal Allegiance are at the Gramercy Theatre on September 6th, the next night at the Gramercy is Amorphis, Dark Tranquillity and Moonspell.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Glenn Hughes brings his Classic Deep Purple live show to the area for a few shows, September 11th at the Chance and September 22nd at the Tarrytown Music Hall. Also, just announced, Arch Enemy and Goatwhore who are at the Space at Westbury September 29th and at the Chance in Poughkeepsie on October 26th. That’s all for now metal fans, until next time, stay heavier than a really heavy thing!!

including Ex-Whitesnake guitarist Doug Aldrich, former Warlock guitarist Tommy Bolan and Amon Amarth vocalist Johan Hegg all show up. A stand out track is said to be titled “Living Life To The Fullest,” which was written about Motörhead front man Lemmy.

Speaking of Whitesnake, I have been talking a bit about the band’s forthcoming LP, Flesh and Blood , because it was due this summer. Whitesnake was trying to finish the record in time for their big tour this summer featuring Foreigner, Whitesnake and Jason Bonham. Thanks to various delays, which the band has blamed on a problem with the board in the studio, hard drive failure and David Coverdale coming down with the flu, the record has been delayed a whopping six months! Whenever the record is released, it will be out via Frontiers Music. This will be the first Whitesnake record to feature guitarist Joel Hoekstra who replaced the previously mentioned Doug Aldritch in 2014.

Former Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing is in the news again. If you remember he was in the news earlier this year when he insinuated that guitarist Glenn Tipton may not have played on the new Judas Priest record, Firepower . His ex-band members in Judas Priest, particularly vocalist Rob Halford, didn’t take too kindly to that. Well KK Downing is in the news this time because he is selling his portion of the rights to 136 Judas Priest songs! The value of this catalog is said to be worth approximately $400,000 annually.

Apparently, KK Downing purchased a 320- acre estate in England a few years ago after leaving Priest with the idea to try and turn into a luxury resort and golf course. Well, things didn’t go as planned, Downing had to file Chapter 11 and sold the property. I can only assume that he has fallen on hard times financially if he is selling the rights to his songs. Nearly every song from the Judas Priest back catalog was written by the team of Tipton, Downing and Halford. Judas Priest are continuing to tour the world in support of their new record. The Firepower tour sees them return to North America in the fall with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, Deep Purple.

With the news out of the way, let’s talk about all those upcoming concerts! Shows that are on the horizon include Marco Mendoza from the Dead Daisies and Whitesnake at the Chance in Poughkeepsie on June 15th, Don Jamieson from That Metal Show on VH1 Classic will also be there. Geoff Tate’s Operation: Mindcrime 30th Anniversary Tour will be at The Chance on June 20th.

PAT BENATAR NEIL GIRALDO PAT BENATAR & NEIL GIRALDO AT R IDGEFIELD P LAYHOUSE Always a rule-breaker and a trail-

blazer, Pat Benatar remains a bold and distinctive artist both on stage and on record, turning the ‘80s plati - num and gold with her break out hits “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”, “Love Is a Battlefield”, “We Belong,” and “Invincible” as well as indelible tunes like “Hell Is For Children.” What you may not know is that her signature sound and many of those hit songs were the product of a collaboration and a 38-year love affair with hus - band, Neil Giraldo, who wrote, pro - duced and arranged over 100 songs for Benatar.

Together they have formed one of the most successful partnerships in music history, winning four Grammy Awards and three American Music Awards and making Benatar, a clas - sically trained mezzo-soprano, one of the most heavily played artists on MTV during the early days of the popular music channel.

Join Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo

for “A Very Intimate Acoustic Eve - ning” at The Ridgefield Playhouse Saturday, June 23rd at 8pm, part of the Pepsi Rock Series powered by Xfinity.

In 1978, in between appearances at Catch a Rising Star and recording commercial jingles for Pepsi Cola, Benatar headlined New York City’s Tramps nightclub, where her perform -

ance impressed representatives from several record companies. She was signed to Chrysalis Records by co- founder Terry Ellis.

In the spring of 1979, producer and writer, Mike Chapman, intro - duced Benatar to Neil Giraldo, an up-and-coming guitarist. Giraldo began his career in 1978, as a key member of the Rick Derringer band, after beat - ing out 200 other guitarists for the position. Chapman felt Benatar needed

a musical director and partner who could establish a more aggressive sound and thought Giraldo was the perfect choice.

In Giraldo, Benatar found some -

one as strong as her, someone who could match the same fire-power, someone who could inspire her, while being inspired by her. Their connec - tion was instantaneous. It was indeed, a perfect fit. In the Heat of the Night , was recorded in June and July 1979. This was the first time the world was introduced to Giraldo and Benatar’s enduring partnership and their rock and roll love affair. In The Heat Of The Night , which included the classic “Heartbreaker” as well as the Giraldo- penned hit “We Live For Love” went platinum. That was the beginning, now come see where these two musi - cians have landed nearly four decades later, as they share their connection with the audience in this intimate acoustic concert. was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was one-year-old and grew up with his family not making it a big deal. However, he became aware of his disability and began to use com - edy as a coping mechanism around high school. And during college, Blue began performing at open mic nights, which allowed him to hone his skills and begin to build a follow - ing.

“I was focused on performing and writing all through college,” Blue said. “I was encouraged to go for it by my friends, and I just kept at it.”

After a handful of years perform - ing at small comedy clubs, Blue got his big break with weekly appear - ances on Last Comic Standing and was adored for his self-deprecating brand of humor. Blue’s story and Last Comic Standing appearance helped him garner a sleuth of performances and appearances in and on pop cul - ture TV like Comedy Central (of which he got his own special for), FOX, CBS, ABC, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show , which was the first time a stand-up comedian performed on the show.

A major proponent of roots music the world over throughout his long career, he’s utilized ele - ments of blues, country, gospel, folk, Tex-Mex, Celtic and Hawai - ian music on his engrossing solo albums — as well as his session work for artists as diverse as Cap - tain Beefheart, the Rolling Stones, Randy Newman, Little Feat and Pops Staples — and his Buena Vista Social Club project made Cuban music an international craze in the mid-’90s. His new

album and first new solo release in nine years, The Prodigal Son dropped March 11th and features a carefully selected collection of his favourite spirituals of the last century that share a particular resonance in this time and place.

Don’t miss Ry Cooder at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Wednesday, June 6th at 8pm, part of the Moun - tain Dew Country & Blue - grass Series. His son, Joachim Cooder, will open the show.

For nearly 50 years, the immense scope and influ - ence of Ry Cooder’s music has been felt as much, or more than heard. As master musi -

RY COODER RY COODER P ERFORMING AT R IDGEFIELD P LAYHOUSE music is music for these times. A deft commentary on our ailing moral state, his new album, The Prodigal Son , is a fearless dive into the country’s soul, and the man, Ry Cooder.

He says of this work, “I do con - nect the political/economic dimensions with the inner life of people, since people are at risk and oppressed on all sides in our world today. There’s some kind of reverence mood that takes hold when you play and sing these songs. ‘Reverence’ is a word I heard my granddaughter’s nurs - ery school teacher use, a Kashmiri woman. She said, ‘We don’t want to teach religion, but instill rev -

erence.’ I thought that was a good word for the feeling of this music.”

Best known for his collabo - rations with his father Ry Cooder, Joachim Cooder is a drummer, percussionist, and keyboardist. He played on the Grammy Award winning albums A Meeting by the River (1993) and Buena Vista Social Club (1997). attracted the attention of many. Drew learned to play the guitar from his father and eventually began sing - ing as the front man of his high school rock band here in Ridgefield (Drew is a 2010 graduate of Ridge - field High School).

Drew’s band participated in the very first BandJam at The Playhouse in 2010. Drew declined the oppor - tunity to study at Berklee College of Music in order to get a degree in eco - nomics. After the success of his video, Drew moved to L.A to pursue a career in music.

Opening act Dylan Hartigan, a New Jersey native, made his acting debut when he was three in a 1-800- FLOWERS commercial, and from there landed roles in numerous com - mercials and TV shows, including Nicole Kidman’s son on The Stepford Wives . In his teens, Dylan quickly turned his focus to music, playing guitar and developing the funk-pop sound that earned him a spot on The Voice .

Multi-talented singer and song - writer Eliza Paltauf has opened for Wilson Phillips, The B-52s, Andy Grammer, Lyle Lovett, Kenny Logins and Howie Day. Her songs are intensely personal and based on her life experiences.

“Sax Master” Baron Raymonde Interview by Roger Zee (04/19/18) www.SaxBaron.com

Roger Zee: Talk about starting out on piano and then picking up the sax. Baron Raymonde: At age six, my father brought me to piano teacher Dr. Del Terzo at Carnegie Hall Studios on 57th Street in Manhattan, NY to see if I had any talent. She took me on as a student and had me playing Mozart by the time I turned seven. It came natural to me. I took lessons on Saturday morn - ing at 8:00am. I remember Vladmir Horowitz coming in once to pay her for renting a studio. She told me that he practiced twelve hours a day for his comeback concert at Carnegie Hall. I started the saxophone when my elementary school offered band instruments in the fourth grade. My best friend signed up for sax so I did too. We played in the school band together. I loved the band and playing with others. RZ: Who provided your early musical inspi - ration? BR: My father brought me at twelve to see Duke Ellington at Lynhurst Castle in Tarrytown, NY. The band’s saxophones blew me away. I knew right then that’s what I wanted to do. My dad bought me Charlie Parker with Strings and that influenced me. Also, Paul Desmond on Dave Brubeck’s Take Five . After I went to a Stan Getz concert as a kid, I bought some of his disks and played along to them. I even tried to get a sax lesson from him. A friend of my mother, Stan Getz’s accountant, gave me his phone number. I called and his wife answered. Said that Stan didn’t usually give lessons. But he got on the phone and asked me why I wanted to study with him. I said I had been copying his licks. He told me to get my own licks! That taught me to develop my own style. Performing on the road with Matt “Guitar” Murphy for eleven years really inspired me. He played great every night, always giving 110 percent. Sax players John Coltrane and Michael Brecker also moved me. RZ: You’ve worked with so many big names. Tell me about a few. PL: Working with Rod Stewart was great! I met him though my friend Chuck Kentis who played keyboards with him at the time. Stewart wanted a blonde, female sax player and asked me if I knew one. I said I would look around. I was asked to gig with him at Cipriani’s in NYC at a benefit. At the rehearsal, he really liked my playing and said he wanted me. I thought he was joking because I wasn’t a blonde woman! But right after, his musical director asked me to perform with them on the Rosie O’Donell Sho w. Following that, his man - ager told me Stewart wanted me on the road. So in 2001, I did the “Human” tour. I loved working with Levon Helm. My old sax player friend Erik Lawrence called me to sub for him with Helm at the Midnight Ramble. I went to Woodstock and immediately fell in awe of the man. He glowed when he performed. The sound and audience was fantastic at the Ramble.

RZ: Where do you mostly gig these days? BR: I work all over. I spent the last couple of summers in Europe with the Original Blues Brothers subbing for “Blue” Lou Marini. I had a lot of fun. I play the tri-state area with Forever Ray, a Ray Charles tribute band, and with Vincent Pastore and the Gangster Squad. I work with a lot of groups at the Cutting Room in NYC and that’s always fun. RZ: Describe your favorite venues and gig. BR: Playing at the Ramble in Woodstock’s one of my favorites. I also love performing at NJPAC in Newark, NJ. It’s a great sounding con - cert hall. One of my most pleasurable gigs occurred with the the Lester Chambers/Harvey Brooks band. We toured the Caribbean in 1988 and worked a club in St. Johns called World Headquarters. It overlooked the ocean and other islands — all visible from the stage. So serene. We played there for two and a half weeks! RZ: Do you teach music? BR: Yes. I’ve taught private sax and piano les - sons for years. After 9/11 though, things slowed down a bit. A trombonist friend, Jeff Dieterle, who had the band called Total Soul that I worked with on occasion, told me about a part-time music position available in his school district to fill in for a maternity leave. I had gotten my Bachelors and Masters in music at the University of North Texas and earned my certification to teach music from William Paterson University. I gave the job a shot and really enjoyed it. That February when the teacher returned from leave, an instrumental music teaching position opened up in my home town of Nutley, NJ. I got the job and have taught there ever since! I love giving back. It’s so rewarding to watch the students grow. RZ: What advice do you give young up-and- coming musicians? BR: Be disciplined in working your craft. Show up early for gigs. Be prepared. Look good and have fun. RZ: How do you see the future of the music business? BR: I’m not encouraged by the small amounts of money the streaming services pay to musi - cians. But I hope that legislation will change that and that people will get tired of electronic music and want to hear live music. I just played a gig in Monaco opening up for Pitbull. He just used tracks which I found a little monotonous, though his dancers were great.

If you can start the day without caffeine or pep pills, If you can be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains, If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles, If you can eat the same food everyday and be grateful for it, If you can understand when loved ones are too busy to give you time, If you can overlook when people take things out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong, If you can take criticism and blame without resentment, If you can face the world without lies and deceit, If you can conquer tension without medical help, If you can relax without liquor, If you can sleep without the aid of drugs, If you can do all these things…

then you are probably the family dog.
