Adam: It’s gone through this thing of being a very underground track, and throughout this year it’s got bigger and bigger and now it’s become commercially acceptable. It’s been a natural progress from the underground, so that’s been good for us.

Do you think that if you’d released ‘Bassline’ when you wrote it two and a half years ago it would have exploded in the same way?Adam: I don’t think it would.

Alex: We could say, oh we’re always trying to be thinking of the future and writing future music, so maybe something we’ve written now will be really big in two years time.

Adam: Being creative is like that. We’ve talked about this before, if you’re a fashion designer you’re constantly thinking a year ahead. But being a musician you don’t think, I’m going to make the next hit that’s next season. You’re just making music that comes from your heart.

Alex: I think with that tune, it’s not some crazy cutting-edge tune. It’s just a really solid, catchy tune that works really well in the clubs. I think having ‘Jack’ by Breach come out last summer paved the way for the more talking-house kind of thing.

Adam: Originally that came out in the late 80s anyway. Franky Knuckles, who just passed, that was the originality of that whole sound.

Your tracks are fairly progressive, but still probably more accessible than others in a similar genre, getting a lot of airplay on mainstream radio and in clubs. Is that what you are aiming for with GotSome?Alex: Yeah, I think so. We just want to write bangers! Write tunes that people can really enjoy. I think going forward, down the line we’ve got ideas for an album that will be in the next year or so, on that will be where we can really spread our wings and

do things a little bit more interesting, creatively, and be a bit more experimental. But to start off with, I think it’s just good to get people’s attention. And that doesn’t mean it has to be really obvious, you can still be quite quirky and do interesting things but you can do it in such a way that people will just enjoy it. I think it’s got a lot to do with groove. If you’ve got a good groove, you could have a crazy tune but if people can dance to it they’ll enjoy it - they get it.

Adam: For me as a DJ as well, it’s really important to me to make those tunes that people are just going to go crazy to. Before we were writing all this incredibly musical stuff and it was really progressive and really fun, but it just lacked that thing for me as a DJ to just go and put it on and go, “yeah, have it!”

The other day we had MistaJam call us up and say he’s got a folder for our tunes which are just party bangers, and that’s just a nice thing to hear. That’s what we want to do, we want to make tunes that people and DJs are going to want to play and go crazy to the max. That’s the goal.

Did you ever expect you would hear ‘Bassline’ played on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show?Alex: It was weird! I had a text from my mum saying she’d just heard me on the radio. There was one thing that really got me, all these nurses phoned in from a ward and they were all dancing around to it. It’s just a really weird mental image of all these nurses dancing to your tune that you wrote two years ago.

Adam: And it’s weird ‘cause when you write these tunes, you don’t think of the outcome of it. You don’t think Nick Grimshaw’s going to really love it.

Alex: I think with that tune we maybe pictured some people shocking out in a club, but you don’t really picture your gran dancing in the kitchen. But I guess that’s a good example of the appeal of a tune, people just enjoyed it.

Alex Holmes and Adam Gorsky are Bristol’s house and bass production duo, GotSome. Their debut track ‘Bassline’ featuring The Get Along Gang has become a certified club anthem, climbing to a very respectable number 4 on the Beatport chart after its release last year. Its catchy hook and inescapable bassline, which nods to Adonis’ house classic ‘No Way Back’ appeals, unusually, to both underground and commercial audiences; getting airplay on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 Breakfast Show and picked up for remixes by the likes of Kenny Dope, Friend Within and Chocolate Puma

Adam and Alex have been writing together for years, combining their separate skill sets and different musical influences from hip-hip to techno to create their own genre-blending sound. A DJ and sound engineer respectively, Alex currently keeps to more behind-the- scenes role in the studio, while Adam, a seasoned DJ, takes the tracks out on the road.

The pair look set for another massive year, with a host of festivals lined up including Love Saves the Day in Castle Park this month, another EP due for release on Defected Records and plans to start work on an album.

Can you give us a bit of the history behind GotSome?Alex: We’ve actually been writing music together for maybe 8 years, probably longer. We’ve worked together on a load of different of projects, writing all kinds of different music. Last year, we decided we wanted to give the music a bit of a harder edge, and just write some bangers really, some big club tunes.

We’ve been working together for a long time so we know how each other works in the studio.

Adam: We’ve gone through so many different styles of music and it’s kind of been organic through the times. We had a band once as well, but downscaled it more and more and more, and now we’re just us two kind, of banging our heads, doing our music.

Bristol has a strong house and bass music heritage. Has growing up in Bristol influenced your sound?Adam: For me it’s mainly been bass music. From a very young age I was brought up on dub and reggae and hip-hip, and obviously Bristol music. Portishead were massive.

Alex: I think we were both clubbing to drum and bass, and Adam was DJing as well at various clubs, around the 2000s and I think to an extent a lot of those big jungle basslines have crept into Bristol house music. And the same with us - we want to take influence from a lot of different things. Like a lot of the music that was around in Bristol before, like dub, hip-hop, and drum and bass; and just kind of feed that in. So it’s not just the kind of regular house that’s been around for years, but trying to infuse a bit of Bristol into it. Generally, like Adam says, it’s mainly bass music - that’s what Bristol loves.

Adam: Bristol is a hub for bass music. At the moment, in a lot of press they’re saying it’s a house city but it’s not, we’ve had bass right from the start. Right from when all the Africans and Jamaicans came here years and years ago, and it’s progressed through trap and trap scenes.

Your track Bassline has become a huge hit, after getting picked up by Defected. How did that all come about?Alex: We actually wrote that tune about two and a half years ago. We were working with the Get Along Gang that did the vocal, and we kind of put our spin on and developed the backing and the rest of the track, and we weren’t really sure what to do with it. But then B.Traits played it on Radio 1 late at night and it just happened to be that some of the guys from Defected were driving home from a gig and heard it. It was just one of those really nice chance moments, where it happened to be on the radio, they happened to be listening to it and they got in touch with us. That’s probably about a year ago that all happened, it’s just taken a while for it to all come together.

Do you think there’s a bit of a general move towards the mainstream for underground electronic and bass and house music?

Adam: I think that it’s progressed naturally and that’s a good thing. Every five to ten years it happens anyway. It happened with dub step, it happened with drum and bass and it’s happened with house music in the 80s as well. So I think it’s just a constant thing.

Also, I believe the underground has changed quite a lot. Before, I feel like more commercial people would stay to commercial things and underground people would stay in certain underground clubs, but now it’s more amalgamated and people are just happy to jam together.

Alex: I think it’s interesting the way the more you take the music of the underground and put it into more commercial space, it’s a good way to push the creativity of all the other underground people that maybe don’t want to be in that space. It’s a bit negative that it turns them off the music in a way, but then it pushes them onto creating something new and different. It’s like a constant cycle. There’s a lot of people that want to be constantly ahead of the curve, riding the wave just ahead of the commercial kind of thing. Hopefully we want to do a bit of both.

Adam: Yeah. We just want to be creative with our sound as well. At the moment we are writing dance floor music, when we come to do our album we want to work with different people, we want to write different music. As I said before, we’re from hip-hip, drum and bass, and stuff like that, so you’ve got to expect that’s what we’re going to be doing in the bigger picture.

Alex: I think it’s important not to try and write commercial music though. Try and write something you love, that you think is good and you enjoy, and if it turns out that loads of other people like it and it becomes big that’s great. There’s definitely a negative thing of people forcibly trying to copy someone else’s style to just get in the charts and that’s not a good thing.

I guess that’s why when we come together we’ve got this amalgamation of sounds. As a teenager I used to work in drum and bass, so also people like Roni Size and Full Cycle and a lot of the early drum and bass and jungle movement. I guess that’s where our sound stems from.

So a mixture of the two?Alex: Yeah, sometimes we’ll have little battles in the studio where I’ll be trying to make it a bit more techno/ electro and Adam’ll be like, nah make it more hip-hoppy. It’s a healthy balance I think.

Adam: I think that’s going to be the outlook of the album, a mixture of both.

You’re in the middle of your Bassline Tour at the moment. How’s that going?Adam: It’s good. It’s pretty tiring, but it’s fun. For me, I’ve been DJing a lot in Bristol so it’s quite good to get out and just see what everyone else is doing. And I’ve been playing near enough the same sort of music at all of them, so it’s good seeing commercial crowds and underground crowds and the way that they like the tunes and get down.

Alex: The general way that we work at the moment is that Adam actually goes out on the road and does all the DJing and my role is more in the studio engineering. So we’ll start the week, work on some tracks, then Adam will go off and get on the road whilst I fiddle away and tweak them. And then I’ll email something over and he can kind of test it out in a club that night.

Adam: Yeah, it’s the best feedback tool in the world, the fact that we’ve got these two different roles at the minute. It’s so good to be able to get Alex to finish something off and then I go and road test it. And then I write him an email back saying exactly what worked and what didn’t.

We’re looking forward to your set at this year’s Love Saves the Day. Do you enjoy playing to a home-crowd?Adam: Yeah! Although it’s actually more daunting playing to your friends. I can go to another town and play to like, two/ three thousand people and not worry but when you’re playing to your friends, they’re your biggest critics aren’t they? But I’m really excited. I can’t wait.

Alex: Yeah, it’s going to be amazing.

What else have you got lined up this year?Adam: A lot. We’re doing a bunch of festivals, and mainly we’re focusing on our next EP.

Alex: We’ve written two and a half tracks, we just need to finish it off. Hopefully that will come out in the next three months on Defected. And we’ve also been doing a lot of remixes which will come out over the next few months.

Adam: We’ve just done two remixes for our friends’ projects. First one, basically one of our friends Sam is in a soca band and he’s hooked up with a guy from Trinidad, and they’ve started a crew project together called Jus Now. And their first single they’ve asked us to do a remix for them. It’s called ‘Tun Up’ and it’s due sometime in the middle of May. And we should be doing a show together at St Paul’s Carnival for Red Bull.

The second one is a remix of a band called Sure Thing, it’s DJ Die and Christophe’s project. It’s kind of a funk/ boogie project and again, coming from Bristol musicians. We’ve done the remix for the first single, which is called ‘Holding You Tight‘ and it’s due at the start of June.

We want to progress our sound as well. What people know us for is what we did two and a half years ago. So right now we’re kind of trying to tell people what we’re doing now - trying to get people to catch up with us!

Alex: It just moves so fast though. I think that’s the whole thing with the electronic music world, you have to try and think ahead a bit. We were very lucky in the fact that ‘Bassline’ was written so long ago and managed to be successful, but quite often you could write something that takes influences from the recent scene and fits in, but then if it doesn’t come out for six months, sometimes things can move on.

Adam: Especially in England at the moment, it’s so cutting edge. It’s really crazy when you DJ abroad a lot you notice how England and Europe on the whole is so at the front with stuff. And I think being in London and Bristol, you kind of get a bit of snobbery about it because it is so fast moving. Something that’s big here a year ago, is massive around the world and is like, totally cutting edge, but we’re-

Alex: Over it!

Adam: Yeah, we’re moved on. We’re on to the next music, the next genre, the next shirt, the next trend, you know - it’s crazy.

Alex: And hopefully we’ll be riding that wave.

Adam: We’ve just got to move forward but be ourselves and not really worry about what other people are doing, because that’s where a lot of people go wrong. They’re constantly looking around them, but I think we’ll just stick to what we’re doing...

Alex: And hopefully people will enjoy it.

it’s mainly bass music - that’s what Bristol loves.”

Who are your biggest musical influences right now?

Alex: Our original musical influences are more from lots of 90s stuff. But right now... What’s our latest batch of things?

Adam: I guess we’re quite heavily influenced by Dirtybird, like Claude VonStroke and Justin Martin.

Something I’m really interested in - in the Midlands right now they’ve got a new house scene which is quite familiar to the scene they had in drum and bass. Like, Hannah Wants, who is a lady DJ, and a guy called Chris Lorenzo, they’ve got a really interesting scene which is very drum and bass and jungle, but they’ve moved into house.

We’re so lucky in Bristol as well with all of the people that are here, there’s My Nu Leng here, a guy called Woz is here as well; they’re all signed to Black Butter. Eats Everything obviously, and then Lukas and Christophe who are on Futureboogie. So obviously they’re an influence on us as well, the people you are surrounded with.

Also, there’s a new kid in Bristol called Troy Gunner and I’m pretty influenced by him as well. He’s really young and he’s really on it.

Alex: And just to throw some older influences in there - originally mine come from Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, so I guess the more of an electronic techno-y kind of side of things.

Adam: Mine’s more hip-hop based, so Basement Jaxx, and more typical 90s hip-hop like Timbaland, Dre and Biggie, stuff like that.

De la sOulLIVE MUSIC

Widely considered a hip-hop masterpiece, De La Soul’s debut album, 3 Feet High And Rising, was hailed as the future of the genre. A colourful burst of neo-psychedelic samples and playful wordplay plus the trio’s trademark witty skits and lyrics, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. True pioneers, De La Soul, eschewed the obvious influences of old-school rap or funk and spread their net wider, taking in pop, jazz, reggae and psychedelia.

25 years on from its initial release, Pasemaster Mase & Posdnuos & Trugoy The Dove are back to remind us that 3 really is the Magic Number.
