Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure

What is it? Prevent it! Respond!

Oh no! I stuck myself with a needle from a

patient!

What do I do if my unhealed cut is

exposed to blood?

Eeek! Fluid from a patient just

splashed in my eyes and nose!

Pathogen Exposure One of the most important responsibilities we have is to help prevent and respond to bloodborne pathogen (BBP) exposure. BBP’s are essentially germs that can be spread by sharing blood. The big worry about BBP exposure is that serious or fatal infections are spread from one person to another this way. Needlestick injuries, cuts, and contact with open skin can expose you to BBP’s. Some of the most serious risks are Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)—the virus that causes AIDS. This is why we check carefully for proper vaccinations before you begin at WVUH. We also work with Infection Control to maintain and improve other ways for staff to protect themselves. Yet despite all we do to prevent accidents with needles and other exposures, they still occur. Employee Health plays a major role in responding to these situations. When you contact us, we respond by following the most up-to-date recommendations. This helps to decrease the chance you may become infected in this situation. In your department, you’ll get detailed information about what to do if you are exposed to a BBP.
