Tell us about your year as Student Council President. What do you think was your best accomplishment? Student Council is mainly about giving my school the best year possible, whether it is with a Talent Show, Buck-A-Jean days, or school dances. Our biggest accomplishment this year is probably the pep rallies we have had. It showed the sense of community at our school and everyone’s school spirit.

What has been your most memorable moment as Student Council President? My most memorable moment is having the ability to start and end each day with announcements/prayer.

Is there anything else that you are involved in at Saint Thomas Aquinas? I am currently a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas National Junior Honor Society.

You just got accepted into Brophy… tell us about that. I was accepted into Brophy with Honors, which shows how prepared every student is that leaves STA. Starting high school is a major step in life, and I am glad to know that I am well prepared.

What are you going to miss most about STA? I will miss the small community that St. Thomas has to offer.

Outside of school, what do you do for fun? Outside of school, I love to play volleyball, and hope to play in the Olympics one day.

How would your friends describe you? My friends would probably describe me as creative and outgoing.

Who/what inspires you to be a great kid? My family is my role model. I have at least one of the same qualities of everyone in my family. They make me who I am.

Do you have an idea of what you want to be when you grow up? I hope to one day be in the field of Sports Medicine.

What is the one thing you are looking forward to most about attending Brophy? I am really looking forward to the academic rigor at Brophy and the ability to play on the volleyball team there. z

Outside of school, what do you do for fun?

Outside of school, I love to play volley-ball, and hope to play in the Olympics one day.

for tHe fIllIng • 3 cups fresh or frozen peaches cut in to small chucks• 1 cup frozen cherries• 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoons grated lemon zest • 1 tablespoon corn starch preparatIonPreheat oven to 375ºF. Lightly butter a baking dish. In a small bowl, combine sugar, lemon zest fruit, cornstarch, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly combined, Pour into baking dish. In a food processor, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon until well combined. Add butter into flour dry mixture. Mix until it resembles a coarse meal with small pea-sized pieces of butter. Add in egg to flour mixture until moistened and dough starts to hold together. Continue to toss and blend gently with fingertips until well combined yet taking care not to overwork the dough. Sprinkle biscuit crumble topping evenly over fruit filling. Bake in preheated oven until topping is golden brown and filling is cooked through and bubbly, about 40 to 45 minutes. To prevent over-browning of topping, cover with sheet of aluminum foil after 25 minutes of baking. Remove foil and carefully transfer to wire rack to cool. Serve cobbler warm a la mode or with fresh whipped cream… or both!

flowerS for MoM tHat lIve foreverwHat you wIll need:• colored pipe cleaner – 6 of each color• decorative flower pot• ribbon• glue dots

for tHe flower pot:1. Cut a pink ribbon to length.2. Attach it to the rim of the pot

using glue dots. I love glue dots, so functional!

3. Tie it off in a bow. I also attached the bow in place with a glue dot.

4. I then added green colored rice we made during Easter to fill the pot, giving it a fun finished look.

for tHe flowerS:1. Wrap a long green pipe cleaner

around the 6 bundled pipe cleaners.2. Bend and twist it to make the stem.3. Spread out your now 12 strands,

and curl them up into each other to make the flower.

4. For a sturdier stem, fold the green pipe cleaner in half again.

Group them all together and tie it with another pipe cleaner.

Or you can leave them separate in the pot for a fun arrangement.

Either way, Mom will love them!

by Sophie Hill, pCdS

LEGO®. Everyone knows it. This classic toy has been a part of countless childhoods, and it has stormed homes everywhere with creativity. Although

LEGO® is technically a toy, it truly is a spectacular artistic medium. The Heard Museum has cultivated its latest exhibit around the idea of LEGO®, constructing intricate pieces that display pop culture and native Arizona landscapes. The main theme of the exhibit is to represent our great state in a way that has not really been done before, whilst creating a fun and interactive atmosphere. Another exciting feature of the exhibit is the emphasis on Native American culture. The combinations of all these factors are sure to pack a powerful punch.

The exhibit will run from May 24th to September 28th. Members of the museum are encouraged to

come at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 24; the event opens to the general public at 1:00

pm on the same day. All ages are welcome to come to this exhibit; it will truly be fun for the whole family. The Heard also plans to have corresponding events called “block parties” (pun intended), with food and entertainment, to go along with the colorful exhibit. These events will have interactive sections designed for the kids, even two year olds, to have fun and play. Admission follows as: Adults $23, students with ID $12.50, seniors $18.50, children 6-12 $12.50, and children 1-5 $5. Go escape the unbearable summer heat and explore this dynamic exhibit. A happy coincidence was the recent release of the LEGO® Movie, which helped develop the idea for this exhibit, although not entirely. This exhibit is truly going to be a wonderful experience that is redefining the art scene in Arizona, with the help of a few rectangular bricks, of course. z

ProtectinG

FamilY

by Sharon ravenscroft, esq.

The durable power of attorney

is a fundamental tool to protect your assets. It allows you to name an agent to handle your assets, if you become ill or incapacitated, are traveling or unavailable for some reason. Even assets held in joint tenancy or community property require the signature by both owners. If either owner is incapacitated, then the other owner would be unable to make a necessary sale without a durable power of attorney. A spouse cannot help a sick spouse with access to a 401K or IRA without a durable power of attorney.

A power of attorney is “durable” if it remains effective even if the maker or principal becomes incapacitated. For a power of attorney to be durable, A.R.S. §14-5501 requires that it specifically say the power of attorney is not affected by subsequent disability or incapacity of the principal or lapse of time.” The principal can still revoke and change the power of attorney at any time, as long as the principal has capacity and understands the consequences of his actions and his finances.

The person you name to assist you with finances is your “agent.” It is a good idea to list an alternate agent in case the first agent cannot serve. For example, if you list your spouse as your agent, but your spouse is ill or injured too, then you need an alternate agent. It is advisable not to have durable powers of attorney contingent upon

your incapacity. You may need assistance while you have capacity but are too sick or injured to handle credit card companies or accounting departments yourself. Also, once you are declared incapacitated you lose the right to make legal decisions, including the ability to change your agent.

Durable powers of attorney are necessary even if a person holds his or her assets in trust, in order to have access to retirement plans, like an IRA, or to contract for services for health or personal care needs. z

Celebrate the tassel, forget tHe HaSSle!

by lori Harlig, amici Catering

1 less stress and more time for everyone to enjoy the special day – this is the day you want to celebrate your child’s achievements. If your goal is to survive the frenzy of friends, family and well-wishers, give yourself a graduation gift

and leave the details to the caterer. You will look so much better in the photographs, relaxed and smiling, with a cold iced tea in your hand – rather than stressed out, wearing an apron and clutching a spatula.

2 caterers have experience creating memorable food ideas – caterers are experts at coming up with creative party ideas. A live, 360-degree action Starbucks Station? Check. Servers centered inside a 5 ft. table, shaking iced lattes or

juice drinks for your guests? Done. Or, how about a made-to-order Waffle Bar or Street Taco station? No problem. The right caterer can amp up the fun and create delicious food and memorable moments.

3 caterers know cool! – Want ideas to keep your guests entertained and engaged? Planners are always trend-spotting the newest party theme or toy. Some of the most popular graduation themes out right now include “It Takes a Village”

(think Disco, Village People costumes, Techno party). Another favorite is “The Orange Party” as in… Orange you glad we’re graduated?! Here, not surprisingly, everyone is invited to dress, breathe and eat all things orange. Caterers also have access to great décor/entertainment items for parties. How about a live Twitter Feed Wall, where friends can share and connect? Include a flavored oxygen bar in the hangout and your child’s friends may never leave!

4 relaxing vs. restocking – You have worked hard to get to this point. Enjoy your party without feeling the nagging anxiety that, instead of mingling, you should be restocking food, drinks, ice, or dumping trash. Your caterer will handle all of the

planning, set-up and (best part) cleanup. Trust me, it is a beautiful thing to wake up the next morning and realize all there is to do is go to brunch.

5 Share the experience – happiness loves company. Using a catering company is the perfect way to invite other families to share in your event. Why not share the love (and the costs)? Combining parties allows for increased budgets, great pictures

and a safer grad hang out. So give yourself the advice you have been saying to your students for years: “Don’t procrastinate!” Hire a caterer today, and don’t miss a single moment of creating unforgettable memories for your graduate. Call Amici Catering at (602) 866-1604. z

Right now, Lori Harlig is probably knee deep in cookbooks and nibbling chocolate chili popcorn with her family and Newfoundland Wonder, but you can contact her at [email protected] for more ideas on how to create an amazing graduation party that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

FOR SUMMER!

A. Yes, campus tours are available for prospective or incoming students.

SCC’s campus tours are led by current students and last approximately one hour. Campus Tour guests are guided through campus and provided information about the many academic and extra-curricular options for students. The tour includes a peak into a classroom or two that aren’t in use, and the opportunity to visit all of the resources and student services on campus.

Tours are available every Monday at 4:00 p.m. and every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. Due to the need to schedule student tour guides, walk-in tours are NOT available. But, members of the community and potential students are always welcome on campus to walk around the grounds and get a feel for the beautiful surroundings and student life.

One of our points of pride on campus is Two Waters Circle, which represents SCC’s partnership with the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community and serves as a living outdoor biology lab. The space often is used as an attractive venue for student and college events, and is an

area where donors, friends, emeriti, students and employees are recognized for various contributions

to the college.

To schedule a tour, you are asked to submit a Campus Tour Request, which is available online by simply clicking the ‘Visit SCC’ link located at the bottom of www.scottsdalecc.edu or by visiting: http://www.scottsdalecc.edu/admissions/visit-scc.

If you have any questions regarding campus tours please contact Timothy Marrinan via email at [email protected] or phone at 480.425.6961.

ShelBY Places 3rd at the health career display competition

q. tell us about hoSa and the recent achievement you just received.a. HOSA is an organization that is part of the Sports Medicine program and helps students prepare for their future in healthcare. I was recently awarded 3rd place out of 87 teams for the Health Career Display Competition at our State Leadership Conference. This allows me to travel to Nationals this summer in Orlando, FL.

At the State Leadership Conference I was voted into the position of AZ HOSA State Secretary for the 2014-15 term.

q. What is your favorite thing about your school? tell us about a great teacher that you have (past or present).a. My favorite thing about BUHS is the Sports Medicine program. I have two favorite teachers, Mrs. White, the Band

Director, and Mr. Jankowski, the Sports Medicine Teacher/HOSA Advisor. They both have allowed me to grow into the leader I am today.

q. tell us about the college you will be attending.a. I will be attending Grand Canyon University in the fall for their excellent nursing program

q. When you are not at school what do you enjoy doing? a. I enjoy reading, sports, writing, and drawing. I also like

doing crafts, like Rainbow Loom and crocheting.

q. What sports are you playing right now? Which one is your favorite? do you play for your school or club? a. I just finished basketball for my school team. My favorite sports are basketball and volleyball because in basketball you are always moving around and thinking of where you are going to pass it. In volleyball, I like serving overhand and bumping it to someone else, then they hit it over, and then we score.

q. tell us about your recent award for being a great communicator?a. I was very surprised when I got this, and was very humbled and honored to have received thisaward. This award is basically given to a studentwho acts as a open communicator in class. Who also asks the teacher helpful questions thatmay help other students understand what isbeing taught in class, and if needed, shareswith students who may have missed classroomassignments, instruction or discussion. Everyother Thursday, a student votes for one oftheir classmates who can get this award, ifchosen by the staff.

q. tell our readers about your recent talent show competition? What song did you sing? did you win?a. ✹Summer School claSSeSCourses are often less

crowded and assignments more con-densed, allowing students to: catch-up, stay engaged, and get ahead.

Be sure to look at what the local community college has to offer! Most credits can transfer toward a future 4-year degree.

✹academic Summer camPS or Summer ProGramSAcademic summer programs are terrific for

keeping kids academically engaged, and often times without their realizing it! When do normal K-12 students learn about the engineering behind building a robot? Likely never!

But in summer programs, kids gain valuable hands-on experience learning how things work, interacting with college professors, and meeting other great kids. Note: Also a rich source for future letters of recommendation!

✹tutorinGMany parents report significant gains in knowledge, understanding, and comfort levels

after summer tutoring. From in-home to in-center, from private to group, do a little research and see what is the best fit for your child and his/her situation.

most important skills employers look for in future employees. This dual reality may seem daunting, but it is possible to instill into your student that public speaking is not only a necessary skill for future employment, but a vital tool for empowerment. A freshman competitor on the speech and debate team entered this year disillusioned with competitive public speaking because of the anxiety and pressure he felt when public speaking. Enter, “P.M.R.V” – preparation, mental recalibration, and visualization; factors independently valuable to becoming an effective public speaker, but producing the best results when done in unison.

1 preparatIon: Practice, over and over, and over again.

2 Mental reCalIbratIon: Restructure your mindset to focus on how the practice sessions or

the strategic development of arguments make you prepared to succeed.

3 vISualIzatIon: Visualize movements, vocal inflection, volume level, and hand gestures before

the speech begins.

Under this model, the student went from finishing in last place at two tournaments in December and January, to being part of the Grand Canyon University team that won a national championship this spring.

These strategies can be taught to and internalized by any student at almost any grade level with a little work, and the results of putting these strategies into practice will not only make students more prepared for future careers, but it will make that graduation speech a little less stressful. z

Each spring, one of the most anticipated events is graduation.

While the throwing of caps is a seminal moment

enjoyed by many; there is a different, more anticipated moment experienced by few: delivering a graduation speech. A breeze for some, a University of Texas study highlights a conundrum – public speaking is the most common fear among Americans, despite being ranked as one of the five
