Paul Cassidy is an excellent student and along with his

commitment to TaeKwonDo, he spends a great deal of time in his other passion of acting.

I have been doing TaeKwonDo for three years at JSK TaeKwonDo dojang (school). After 11 previous belt advancements, I will be receiving my first

degree black belt in April. For my advancement, I have to do ten different patterns (a combination of moves), break 10 wooden boards, and also take a written test. I also have to memorize the five tenets of TaeKwonDo, which are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control, and Indomitable Spirit. I like TaeKwonDo because it’s a lot of hard work, but it’s really fun and really rewarding.

Paul is an eighth grader at St. Francis Xavier School.

Since the age of four, Charlie has overcome many obstacles, including his diagnosed autism. Today at age 17, he continues to need support for reading and

staying focused.

Charlie’s parents knew that the traditional school setting might not be the right fit for recognizing and building on Charlie’s strengths. As they were looking for another option last summer, they discovered Brightmont Academy, a school that specializes in one-to-one instruction. After talking with the campus director, it seemed like a good fit for Charlie, and he enrolled in August 2014.

Charlie, who is an incredibly social student, takes his core classes at Brightmont Academy, and then he participates in electives like

ceramics, P.E., world history and theology at Bourgade Catholic High School. He is also a passionate tennis player and plays for the tennis team at Bourgade. Brightmont Academy provides him with the flexibility he enjoys to train for tennis during the week while also ensuring that he stays on track with his academics.

“Charlie is doing incredibly well with the one-to-one instruction model at Brightmont Academy,” said Susie, Charlie’s mother. “He has always been a happy boy, but he is thriving at Brightmont Academy. He has made new friends, he really enjoys his teachers and he can focus on schoolwork without getting distracted.”

Charlie is 17 and attends Brightmont Academy, Deer Valley Campus.

Q. I know you come to some after school activities, can you tell me about those?A. After school is so much fun! I love the arts and crafts we do. Plus, I take gymnastics class which is really really fun.

Q. Do you have any ideas of what you want to be when you’re older?A. Oh yeah, I want to be a doctor.

Alexa is a kindergartener at International School of Arizona.

Tristan is a natural born leader and would never leave anyone

behind. He hopes to play professional soccer one day!

Q. Tell us about your soccer team, are they any good?A. My soccer team is the SC Del Sol which means, soccer club of the sun. SC Del Sol is a very talented club. They have coaches that are brilliant and have

experience being a player at one point; they then bring their talents as coaches to us as young players. My team is the Anderson 02 Boys. This is because my coaches name is Thomas Anderson; he has amazing talents of coaching. The 02 Boys is because I was born in 2002. The Anderson 02 boys team has a lot of talented kids that have the gift of potential that not many people possess. We are in division two. We work extremely hard each and every practice to be the best team! SC DEL SOL!!!!

Tristan is a seventh grader at Freedom Academy.

Jordan Clark, sixth grader at Tesseract School, recently performed in “The Nutcracker Ballet,” an Arizona School of Classical Ballet production.

Q. How long have you participated in the ballet?A. I have participated in ballet since I was nine years old, however, I’ve danced my entire life.

Q. What is your favorite part/role about the ballet?A. My favorite part about ballet is performing. There is no feeling that is as blissful as performing. My favorite role that I’ve played is Marie, a character in “The Nutcracker.” Playing a main role like that is very exciting.

Q. Besides “The nutcracker,” what other performances have you participated in?A. My ballet school hosts a spring performance, “The Story Time.” I have been in that performance two times, going on three.

Q. Do you feel the ballet has prepared you as a student? Why?A. Ballet has taught me discipline, which can be helpful during classes at school. Discipline also helps me to be a self-starter in my classes.

Jordan is a sixth grader at Tesseract School.

Nikhil has already made a big impact on the world. From volunteering, to studying and now raising awareness for neurological diseases,

read more about what he has planned next.

Q. How did you get interested in neuroscience?A. In middle school, I needed volunteer hours for National Junior Honor Society so I decided to volunteer at a local senior center called Solterra Senior Living (Memory and Alzheimer’s Care). Q. Why did you start a Researching for the Cure Club at Horizon Honors?A. My goal in starting the Researching for the Cure Club at Horizon Honors was to do two things. First, I wanted to raise awareness and educate our community about diseases that affect millions worldwide such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Also, I wanted to raise money and donate that money to organizations that fund labs doing research for diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Can You Imagine YourselfWiThouT Belly FAT?

By Dr. Dylan Foster

Millions of people wish they could, they try hard, but get nowhere. Worse, yet, most gain it all back. Are you one of these millions of frustrated people ?

If so, you don’t have to be anymore! We are taught and told time and time again that it is calorie out vs calorie in, or we just need to exercise more, or it is genetics, or we just need to take this magical pill. Unfortunately, there is very little truth to any of this. Two out of three Americans are either overweight or obese! Childhood obesity has nearly tripled since 1980! One in five kids are now overweight by age 6! Obesity has become an epidemic! The reason I give you these scary statistics is because I need to prove a point. This obesity epidemic we are in is because almost everything we have been taught is pretty much all wrong. If there was any truth to what we are all hearing and learning then 65 percent of our country wouldn’t be overweight. Especially with access to all the weight loss products, fads, programs, supplements, gyms and so on. I don’t need to tell you that being overweight is exhausting, stressful and frustrating, but what you do need to know is that being overweight bares many serious dangers. In fact, even the US Centers for disease control and prevention ranks obesity as the number one health related condition, above heart disease and cancers!

If you truly want to lose your belly fat once and for all, then you are going to have to forget almost everything you currently know about losing weight. It is not just about eating less, dieting or exercising more. You need to know that being overweight is actually a huge sign of many potential health problems within your body. Such as: DIABETES, HEART DISEASE, ORGAN AND ENDOCRINE DYSFUNCTION, HORMONAL IMBALANCES and TOXIN OVERLOAD! When someone is overweight, that is because of a sluggish metabolism. A sluggish metabolism is the first sign of a toxic, stressed body and damaged endocrine system.

Here are some causative factors you typically don’t hear about:Heavy Metals: We are exposed to an enormous amount of heavy metals and toxins in our world on a daily basis? Did you know that the body’s process to protect it’s organs from these heavy metals is to make more fat, for fat traps heavy metals and protects vital organs.

Antibiotics: Used in the animal industry to fatten up livestock! We are also prescribed antibiotics. We also get lots of exposure through all forms of non-organic dairy and meat products that we eat.

Growth Hormones and Beta-Agonists: In meat and dairy products to fatten up livestock and is in allergy medications like Advair.

Endocrine Disruptors: Like fire retardants (ie - carpet, furniture, beds), plastics, MANY foods, pesticides, receipt paper, our water supply, personal care products, toys and more are known to completely throw off our hormones!

Artificial Sweeteners: Used in low calorie diet foods actually stimulate your appetite and your fat storage process.Weight loss and belly fat reduction really isn’t that difficult to achieve if you know what to address and what you are doing. The problem is that most of what we hear, see and learn is from large corporations that profit very well from us through the choices that we make, that are causing us to be overweight, making them even more money.

To lose weight and keep it off you need to work on a functional wellness approach where you are addressing both the symptoms and the causative factors. Otherwise you will only waste your time, money and energy on what I like to refer as the “dreaded treadmill” effect in which you are doing everything in your power yet you are going nowhere fast. To achieve amazing, long term results you need to work with a holistic health care provider/coach that focuses on addressing all these underlying issues through a functional wellness approach. Z

Can You Imagine YourselfWiThouT Belly FAT?

Do you or your children like reptiles or learning about the natural world?

If so, the Phoenix Herpetological Society is a place you need to see and be! We have over 1700 animals, including reptiles from around the world, endangered species, the largest venomous snake collection in the southwest, and the second largest crocodilian collection in the country!

We primarily work with rescued, rehabilitated, surrendered pets, or confiscated animals from Arizona and across the United States. However, we also run an endangered crocodile breeding program, have ongoing research projects, and collaborate with organizations across the world.

PHS conducts school presentations and field trips of our sanctuary year-round, but in the summertime, we focus on our Reptile Encounters Summer Camp.

Camp at PHS is not a typical summer camp. Each day campers study a different group of reptiles, through observations, interactions, and research. It is a unique and memorable way to spend a week of their summer that even helps prepare them for the upcoming school year.

Even though it is a science-based camp, we cover all aspects of STEAM: Science,

Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math. Our summer camps are from 9:00 am–3:00 pm Monday–Friday, cost $275 per camper per session, and are organized by age. We are offering multiple sessions of 8 year old camp, Junior Camp (9-11 year olds), and Advanced Camp (12-14 year olds).

Campers participate in hands-on activities with the tortoises to learn about their habitats and diet as well as research projects with various reptiles such as weighing/measuring predictions and calculations.

To learn more about the Reptile Encounters 2015 Summer Camp, please email the PHS Education Director (Crystie Baker) at [email protected] or call 480.513.4377 ext. 3. Registration will begin soon; you don’t want to miss this opportunity! Z
