For a while they thought they were

going to win the $10,000 prize again, butwhen the judges decision was announced,it was second place for Manistee award-winning cake decorator Jennifer Dontz inthe episode of the TLC Network programUltimate Cake Off that was aired thispast week.

Dontz said that when the decisioncame down in the final minutes of theshow between her team and one fromPennsylvania after a third team was elimi-nated, she thought just maybe they wouldget the prize.

The Manistee woman owns and oper-tes Sugar Delites and was on a teamed by Martha Hebert and her business

artner Becky Guidry of St. Martinville,a. as well as Denise Talbot of Nederland, exas.

The same four-person team did win

the $10,000 prize during a Septemberepisode.

The show that aired Monday night wasfilmed in January in Los Angeles. Thetheme was Fairy Tale Wedding, and thecompetition is winner take all.

Thats right, its win or lose, totally,Dontz said. The teams that lose in mostcases spend more on travel and accom-

modations than the allowance from theshow. The thing people dont understandabout these compeitions is how expensivethey are, and all of the expenses are onthe shoulders of the team leader. You caneasily have $5,000 in it by the time you

bring a team and pay for food and roomand airline tickets and everything.

But I guess its just the love of the artthat makes it worth the expense for theopportunity, she said.

The promotion for the latest episodecalled it the most intense Ultimate CakeOff ever and said that the pressure ofthe competition caused some of the deco-rators to break down in tears.

Dontz said that the one hour show thatcapsulizes the nine hours of competition

CATS:LOCALCAKEARTISTINTHESPOTLIGHTAGAIN ... FROM PAGE 1sometimes makes thingsappear more dramaticthan they really were.

The thing with TV,and I have learned a wholelot from doing this, isthat things are not always

as they really were, shesaid. There is so muchof it thats drama. Theypull elements from yourconversation here and putthem over there. Some ofthe episodes portray peo-

ple to really be nasty.Despite the drama that

the show portrayed, Dontzsaid, We totally got along

with the other teams. Wewent to dinner togetherand laughed and had a

    good time.Still, Dontz said, there

is lots of stress into mak-ing a cake in just ninehours.

We are passionateabout it, she said. Thething about a competi-tion like this is that yourepushing and pushing andpushing. Youre tryingto beat the clock. Eventhe best persons work

might not be their bestwhen youre being pushedlike that. It can be prettystressful and nerve wrack-ing, to say the least.

Dontz specialty ismaking sugar flowers, and she said she was a

bit disappointed that thecommentators had a lotto say about the quality offlowers on one of the othercakes, but not much men-tion was made of hers.

My friend Denise said,You know, I was so disap-pointed, Jen, because they

commented on the othergals flowers, but yourflowers were right there.

I was disappointedbecause flowers are mything, thats what I traveland teach and I am proudof them. But, you know, thats TV. Behind thescenes the judges cameup to me, the camera mencame up to me, and saidoh, my gosh, are thosesugar? So that made mefeel good.

Dontz said thatalthough they were just

happy to be in the compe-tition, still, they were dis-appointed that they didnt

    win.The day was super

long, she said. The clockstarted at 6 a.m. and we

were totally exhausted bythe time it ended. Its hardto describe. Youre just

very, very tired. She said after the nine

hours of competition, eachteam has to present theircake, then they were sentto dinner while the judgesdeliberated for several

    more hours.Dontz said she was

also disappointed that thejudges criticized a com-puter her team used to cutout some of the patternsfor the cake.

I was super surprisedthat they were so nega-tive about it. Other teamshad used it before. All thedesigns that we did with it

were original, and I dontsee where theres much ofa difference from cuttingthe designs other ways.

    As was the case when

she was on the programlast fall, she is hearingfrom a lot of friends who

watched the show. Oneof her fans was particu-larly disappointed with the

judges decision. Dontzsaid she laughed when thefriend said, I havent beenthis mad since the O.J.Simpson verdict.

She said she is taking itall in stride.

The southern thing(her three teammates arefrom the south) is rubbingoff on me, She said. Youknow, they say mammathis and mamma that. Ifound myself saying afterthe show, My mammatold me at a young agethat you cant win them alland what doesnt kill youmakes you stronger andmaybe well get them thenext time.

Lstings for futureshowings will be availableat the Web site http://tlc.discovery.com.

    Facebook: One moreway to communicate

Last week, nearly 60business people convenedin the computer lab at WestShore Community Collegefor a sold-out workshopentitled Find MoreBusiness On Facebook, presented by theLudington/Scottville andManistee Area Chambers ofCommerce.

Thats a lot of very busybusiness people, so whatwas it about this particulartopic that prompted themto spend nearly four hourscreating a Facebook pagefor their business?

Its pretty straightfor-ward really Facebook is

one more way for business-es to reach their customersand their community andcommunicating is the keyto success for businesses.

Look for pages fromchamber members SnydersShoes, Goodys Juice andJava, Onekama FamilyMarket and MembersCredit Union, among oth-ers.

Chamber BusinessManager Janette Virta andintern Delaney Bachmanwere two of the peopleat the seminar and their

mission was to create apage on Facebook for theManistee National ForestFestival, which seemsmonths away but is reallyust around the corner for

the volunteers who put itall together.

Forest Festival informa-ion will also be availablen the Manistee Newsdvocate, in thousandsf brochures and on web-ites including www.isitmanisteecounty.com,ww.manisteedowntown.

om and of course onhe Chambers newly re-esigned website www.anisteechamber.com.

Ive always believed thatad communication is athe root of every problemnd good communications at the center of everyolution. (Take a momentnd think about that itsretty compelling.) Thatshe most exciting partf last weeks Facebookorkshop more ways

o communicate meanshat we have more ways to

    work together in ManisteeCounty.

Three employees of theHuron-Manistee NationalForests will accept aprestigious nationalaward this week at the2010 Wings Across theAmericas ConservationAwards ceremony inMilwaukee, Wis.

The 2010 awards cer-emony is being held inconjuction with the 75thNorth American Wildlifeand Natural ResourcesConference.

Dr. Heather Keogh ofBaldwin, David Newhouseof Cadillac and PhilHuber of Mio will receiveawards from the chief ofthe U.S. Forest Service,Tom Tidwell. Awards goto Forest Serviceemployees and theirpartners, including con-servation organizations, universities, volunteers, foundations, and privatesector firms.

The Huron-Manisteeemployees will receivethis award for their workin the conservation of theKarner blue butterfly.

This annual event cel-ebrates exceptional workthat conserves birds, bats, and butterflies andtheir habitats across theAmericas. All of thesespecies are important, notonly for their ecologicalroles, but also for theirintrinsic beauty and theroles they play in humanculture. Unfortunately, many birds, bats, andbutterflies face threats

mostly due to habitatloss. Up to 25 percent ofthe bird species in thecontinental United Statesneed urgent conservation

action. Bat populationsare declining globally, mostly due to habitatdestruction, but alsodue to a new disease,

white-nose syndrome.Butterflies like the migra-tory Karner blue havealso seen a dramaticdecline in their habitats.

In response to theseconservation challenges, the Forest Service hasadopted an all-landsapproach. In most of the

    country, landscape-scaleconservation requires

working with partnersacross borders and own-erships. Migratory speciesclearly demonstrate the

value of and the need foran all-lands approach. Itdoes no good to protectsummer habitat for themin one place withoutalso protecting winterhabitat in the other place, sometimes thousands ofmiles away. These ani-mals teach us the needfor working together withpartners at scales rangingfrom regional to national, and international andintercontinental scopes.

At all these scales, peopleshare common goals forthe landscapes used by

    wildlife species cherishedby so many.

Further informationis available at the U.S.Forest Service Web site www.fs.fed.us/global/

    AUCTION

    Biddingits as easy as...

1 2 3Determine the maximum amount you arewilling to pay for the item you are bid-ding on. Record the amount on the Of-ficial Bid form as your Maximum SecretBid. Be sure to enter the item number anddescription of the item you are biddingon as well. Your Maximum Secret bidmay not necessarily be the price you payif you are the successful bidder (you maypay less, never more). However, choosea maximum carefully as you wont beable to reduce it later and youll be le-gally bound to pay that price if it is thewinning bid.

If you are bidding on-line, fill out yourname in full, address, age, email ad-dress and your home and work phonenumbers in the appropriate fields. After

you have become a registered bidder, follow the on-line instructions. If biddingby telephone, have the aforementionedinformation on hand.YOU MUST INCLUDE ALL INFOR-

    MATION. FORMS WITH MISSING

    INFORMATION ARE NOT VALID

    AND WILL BE REJECTED WITHOUT

    NOTICE.

Submit your bid anytime between 9:00am Saturday, March 21 and 9:00 pmMonday, March 30. Under no circum-stances will bids be received after 9:00pm on the auctions final day.BY PHONE:

Call the Auction Central Bid Line aslisted in the bottom left hand corner ofthis page.VIA OUR WEBSITE:

    www.pgauctionmania.com

    GOOD LUCK

BIDDING ON THE INTERNET IS AS EASY AS...1) Select category of item you are interested in2) Select the item you want to bid on3) Click on Bid On This Item4) If you are a Fist Time Bidder, click on Create An Account5) Follow On-Screen instructions

    6) Click Submit7) Now Big on Your Chosen Item or Items8) You now have a user name and password, and wont

have to put in your information again. You can just getright to bidding!

WHY A MAXIMUM SECRET BID?Because Auction Mania is not a live auction, you cannot reactinstantly to someone bidding against you on the same items. Forthis reason we are using a system called PROXY BIDDING. Un-der Proxy Bidding, you tell our Auction Trust Committee the most

you are willing to pay for an item. This is your maximum SecretBid and is known only by you and the Auction Trust Committee. The Committee then PLACES A BID ON YOUR BEHALF at theLOWEST POSSIBLE to make you the high bidder for the item. If

you are outbid, the Auction Trust will up your bid by set dollarincrements until you are again the higher bidder or until yourmaximum Secret Bid is reached. YOUR BID WILL NOT EXCEEDYOUR MAXIMUM SECRET BID UNLESS YOU SUBMIT ANOTHER

FORM WITH A HIGHER MAXIMUM. Should you choose to pur-sue the purchase of the item by using a Maximum Secret Bid, yousave yourself the trouble of having to submit another form whensomebody outbids you. As a result, you reduce the chances ofbeing outbid at the last minute before the auction ends.

EXAMPLES OF PROXY BIDDING1) Bidding for an item starts at, for example, $5002) Bidder A determines that he is willing to pay $750 for

that item and therefore submits a MAXIMUM SECRET BID of$750 for the item.

    3) The AUCTION TRUST COMMITTEE enters a bid of $500 (theopening bid) on behalf of bidder A, which is the minimumneeded to make bidder A the highest bidder.

    4) You determine that you are willing to pay $1,000 for thesame item, therefore you submit a MAXIMUM SECRET BID of$1,000 for that item.

    5) The AUCTION TRUST COMMITTEE enters a bid for $760on your behalf, which is the minimum amount needed to

make you the highest bidder.6) The auction ends.7) You are the winner. You purchase the item for $760, plus

    applicable taxes.
