Doug Bell, director of golf and gen-eral manager at Manistee National Golf& Resort, has accepted the challenge ofchairing the annual fund drive for UnitedWay of Manistee County.

Its good timing for me to be able tocommit time, Bell said. Weve had a goodsummer and have been very busy finishingthe clubhouse and getting that back on lineand then its been a good busy summer onthe golf course.

This years goal will be a bit higherthan it has been in the past at $250,000,and Bell said he has high hopes that it willbe reached.

I know Corey (Van Fleet, execu-

tive director of United Way of ManisteeCounty) has a mission to have to havesome pretty substantial initial dollarsalready committed by the time the cam-paign kickoff breakfast rolls around, whichwill make our aggressive goal look thatmuch more attainable, Bell said.

Honestly, this is going to be kind of alearning curve for me, he continued. DoI have a set strategy? No, Id have to saythat right up front. Am I thinking of a fewdifferent things that I can contribute thatmight be new? Yes, with my backgroundin golf, I may be able to work with the golf

courses we have in the county to bringsome funds that havent been there in thepast.

Bell noted that he has worked withUnited Way in the past as a member ofthe dispersment committee and has alsohelped for a number of years with the LakeMichigan Broadcasting Company golf out-ing held in October to benefit United Way.

I have always wished that I wouldhave had the time to be a member of dif-

    Manistee County tokick-off annual United

    Way campaign

Doug Bell, (above) director of gold and general manager at Manistee nationalGolf & Resort, was named the chairman of the 2010 United Way Campgain.

ON A MISSIONIts an aggressive goal andits got some people think-ing. Will people in ManisteeCounty give a little more? Ithink theyre always willing

to if they are approached inthe right way. I truly thinkthere are a lot of people outthere who dont think aboutUnited Way at all. If we canenlighten some folks whowould be willing to give, andinform them on all that itgoes to, then I think we havea chance.

ture in place for this cam-paign, so Im excited aboutit. If it was, here, Doug, heres the goal, go do it,I dont know that I wouldhave said yes because I amgoing to learn. Corey hasfilled me in quite a bit tothis point but the first halfdozen meetings Im going togo to, Im going to learn alot more than I know now.

    Its an aggressive goal

and its got some peoplethinking, Bell said. Willpeople in Manistee Countygive a little more? I thinktheyre always willing toif they are approached inthe right way. I truly thinkthere are a lot of people outthere who dont think aboutUnited Way at all. If we canenlighten some folks who

would be willing to give, and inform them on all thatit goes to, then I think wehave a chance. People dontreally know how big it is

and how many people theorganization touches.Last year, United Way

of Manistee County raised$190,000 and dispersedfunds to 12 agencies Alternatives for Area

Youth, American Red Cross,ARC of Manistee County,Big Brothers Big Sisters,Boy Scouts, CHOICES, GirlScouts, Manistee County4-H, Manistee Recreation

Association, SalvationArmy, Staircase YouthServices and ManisteeCounty 2-1-1.

Bell is well known inthe golf world. He is apast board member of theMichigan Section PGAand is currently a com-mittee member with theMichigan Section PGA. Hehas won an award from theMichigan Section PGA asthe resort merchandiserof the year and has servedas the past president ofthe Northern MichiganPGA. He has a weekly localradio program, Golf TalkThursday, which promotes

all of the charity golf eventsat local courses. Duringthe peak of the season,Manistee National Golf &Resort employs 65 peoplein all three operations two golf courses, a hotel, and the Grille restaurant.

Bell and his wife,Ann, have two children Hannah, 15, and Blake, 13.He is a private pilot, having

built his own airplane. My family enjoys all

that Manistee County hasto offer as much as we can,he said.

ferent service clubs, but myduties and responsibilitiesat the golf course have just

been too intense, Bell said. So, when I talked withCorey, he filled me in on

what the position entailsand the team that has beenset up and I felt like, if hethought I could do it, thenIll put my best effort intoit.

    Bell, who is from the

Cadillac area, first workedin Manistee County as thegolf professional at BearLake County Highlandsfrom 1992 through 1994. In1999, he joined ManisteeNational right after newowners purchased thecourse that had been estab-lished as Cobi Pines GolfCourse.

    There is a good struc-

    writer.While Im very aware

many come to see the actorfrom Dumb and Dumberor Gettysburg or whatever, but they leave saying, I hadno idea he could play orsing.

I bought a guitar whenI moved to New York City

in 1976. Lonely and out ofwork, I dove head first into

Stefan Grossmans GuitarTablature Books and juststarted writing and playingaway my solitary misery. This little diversion lastedfor decades.

So, for those consid-ering doing this kind ofthing, I highly recommendrehearsing for 30 years to

    get yourself ready.After a 2009 concert

at the City Winery in NewYork City, New York Postcritic Dan Aquilante wrote,(Daniels) voice is flexibleenough to ape Lyle Lovettin one tune and conjureSpringsteen in the next. Andhis songwriting is clever, funny and has an eccentricattitude.

The best moments werewhen he reprised his songThe Dirty Harry Blues,

which he wrote about hiswork playing the villain inClint Eastwoods film Blood

Work. In his patter beforethe tune, Daniels gushed:You dont know what anhonor it is for an actor toget killed by Clint. Danielslearned something fromthe master: At this show hekilled, too.

Born and raised inMichigan, Daniels returned

home in 1986 after star-ring in Woody Allens film,The Purple Rose of Cairo. There, he realized his dreamof creating a professionaltheater company featur-ing Midwestern actors, directors, designers andplaywrights situated in themiddle of America produc-

ing plays about middleAmerica: The Purple RoseTheater.

To raise money forthe Purple Rose, Danielsperforms his show for two

weeks every Christmas andNew Years. Nine yearsand over $500,000 later,he decided his show couldtravel.

What started out as away to raise money has nowbecome something I reallyenjoy doing, he said. IfIm having fun out there, so

does the audience. Thatsthe thing about my show; Inever know whats going tohappen next.

Every night, I have a setlist with far too many songson it. If the audience wantsto listen, great. If they wantto laugh, fine. If the guitarplayers want to see actor

boy get up and down theneck, I can do that, too.

Unlike Broadway wherethe play is pretty muchthe same every night, theexciting thing about doingthis show is embracing theunpredictability of it. Itmakes playing live alive.

Audiences feed off theexcitement in that.

When asked why hedoesnt tour with a band,Daniels said, Schedulingrehearsals is far easier whentheres only one of you.

Besides, Im hardly aloneout there. The actor withcomic timing and stagepresence is with me; theplaywright whos written 14plays guides the storytelling, the musician whos taken anacoustic guitar and turned itinto an obsession, as well asthe director whos helmed

film and stage productions;all those guys are with me.

Creatively, when I grabmy guitar and walk out infront of an audience, I feelas if Im finally using all ofmyself.

Daniels show at theRamsdell will take place onTuesday, Sept. 21 at 7:30p.m. Tickets are $28.50 andcan be purchased by callingthe West Shore CommunityCollege box office at (231)843-5507 or online at:

Whether youre walkingalong Manistee Riverwalk,or hiking in the ManisteeNational Forest, if youre asenior citizen, such strolls ca

wreck havoc on your joints. It happens to almost all

senior citizens joint painfrom a lifetime of lifting,

bending and normal wearand tear. Beyond medication, there are steps you can taketo relieve stress while goingabout your daily activities, according to the ClevelandClinic.

If youve lived longenough, inflammation in theankle, knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and wrist can causepain, swelling and limitedmotion.

If you have joint painor suffer from arthritis, nodoubt youve already beenprescribed medication by

your doctor to reduce thesesymptoms. But theres a lot

you can do yourself apartfrom taking your medication to lessen joint pain.

What can you do:1. Control your weight.

Obesity puts extra stress onweight-bearing joints, suchas the back, hips, knees andfeet.

    2. Be aware of body posi-tion, using good posture toprotect your back and the

joints of your legs and feet.Whenever possible, sit down

to perform a job instead ofstanding. Change positionoften, since staying in oneposition for an extendedperiod tends to increase stiff-ness and pain.

    3. Conserve energy byallowing for rest periods dur-ing the workday and whileperforming any activity.

    4. Respect pain. Its yourbodys way of telling yousomething is wrong. Dontinvolve yourself in an activitythat puts strain on joints thatare already painful or stiff.

    5. Use care when gettingin and out of a car, chair, ortub, as well as for climbing, lifting, carrying, pulling, orpushing objects. Think before

you strain. Tip: Try to alwayssit in the highest chair in theroom, and look for chairs

with armrests to make iteasier to get up.

    6. Use your strongestjoints and muscles to reducethe stress on your smaller

joints. For example, carry apurse, handbag, or briefcase

by its shoulder strap ratherthan by its handle.

    7. Distribute pressure tominimize stress on any single

joint. Lift dishes with both ofyour palms rather than withyour fingers, and carry heavyloads in your arms instead of

with your hands.8. Avoid tight gripping,

pinching, squeezing andtwisting if your hands areaffected by arthritis. Ways toaccomplish the same tasks

After all these years, Istill get my primary localnews, from local newspa-pers.

A few months ago, Iread my local hometownweekly newspaper and Ilearned a childhood friend a fellow classmate had died after battlingcancer.

Gary was one ofthe nicest guys Id everknown. Everyone likedhim. He was kind, funny,a good athlete and theonly problem he and Iever had was our junior

year when he unseated meas Class Clown.

    That hurt.

My heart sank as Iread Garys obituary in theReed City newspaper. Ive

written dozens and dozensof obituaries during my35-year newspaper career probably even hundredsof em and it still hurtsto read em.

That hurt, too.Funny, the only fist

fight I ever got into highschool, was with Gary.Just one fist was thrown,

and it wasnt mine.Did I tell you that

    hurt?Then, that closed fist

became an open hand an open hand that reacheddown to pick me up.

You OK, Gary asked?Yeah, I stuttered,

    my chin deflected theblow.

    Gary laughed.

He slapped me on theshoulders, and laughed.Gary went on to serve

a stint with the U.S.Marines, while I joinedthe Navy. He became apretty good slow-pitchsoftball player in ReedCity, while I became anumpire.

Whenever Gary cameto the plate, hed alwayshave something kind tosay. Hed comment abouta column or story Id writ-

ten that week he alwaysliked them and hedalways ask me how mykids were doing.

Then, if he wasntsmacking the ball over thefence, hed smack it off thefence and leg out a double,or triple.

All the time, hed bewearing a grin as wide asthe infield, itself.

Good golly, but Garyliked to smile, laugh andhave a good time.

    He valued friendship,too.

Being so removedfrom my hometown my

wife and I have been inManistee for nearly 10

years now Im no longerprivy to the coffee shoptalk. I no longer have peo-ple stopping in the officehere in Manistee, to tellme whats happening back

in Reed City.So when I read Garys

obituary after the fact his funeral had come

and gone I was espe-cially crushed. I wouldhave liked to have had theopportunity, one last time,to say thank you, andgood-bye.

And I would have likedto have told him that it

wasnt his one punch thatI remember so much, butthat he reached down,to help me up, brush meoff and extend an olive

    branch.After all, I had pro-

voked the fight, and Garyfinished it.

Then, in typical Garyfashion, he reached down, helped me up, and smiled.

I would have likedto have thanked him fordoing that, too.

with alternate methods ortools can usually be found.

    9. Investigate assistivedevices. Many of these self-help products bath stools, grippers, reachers, grab bars have been developed tomake every-day activitieseasier and less stressful onyour joints and muscles. LANSING TheMichigan Departmentof Community Health(MDCH) confirmed a

third case of EasternEquine Encephalitis(EEE) in Barry County onMonday.

A 52-year-old woman, who first fell ill in lateJuly and was hospital-ized, is in a rehabilitationcenter recovering fromthe illness. The previoustwo human cases of EEEare in Kalamazoo County.A 61-year-old man ishome recovering from theillness while a 41-year-oldman is in intensive carein a Kalamazoo Countyhospital.

All human cases havea history of local expo-sure to mosquitoes. Theseare the first human casesreported in Michigansince 2002. No furtherdetails about the threecases are being released.

The MDCH and theMichigan Departmentof Agriculture (MDA)are continuing to receivereports of cases of EEEin horses in SouthwestMichigan, including

Barry, Calhoun, Cass,Kalamazoo, and St.Joseph counties. EEEis one of the most dan-gerous mosquito-bornediseases in the U.S., kill-ing one third of thosehospitalized with theinfection, and often leav-ing survivors with lastingbrain damage. In the faceof this ongoing outbreak,Michigan residents areurged to take precautionsagainst mosquito bites.

    A virus of birds that

with EEE may experiencefever, headache, chillsand nausea.

EEE is spread bymosquitoes and causesinflammation of thehorses brains and leadsto death in up to 90 per-cent of the cases. Peoplecannot get the diseasefrom horses, only frommosquitoes.

Steps people shouldtake to protect them-selves include: Use repellent: When

outdoors, use insectrepellent containingDEET, picaridin, IR3535or oil of lemon eucalyptuson exposed skin and/orclothing. The repellent/insecticide permethrincan be used on clothingto protect through several

washes. Always follow thedirections on the productlabel. Stay indoors when

    mosquitoes are biting:Mosquitoes are most

active at dusk and dawn. Wear protective

clothing: Wear longsleeves and pants when

    weather permits. Install and repair

screens: Have secure, intact screens on win-dows and doors to keepmosquitoes out. Keep mosquitoes

from laying eggs nearyou: Mosquitoes canlay eggs even in smallamounts of standing

    water.
