Refurbished monument to honor allManistee County veterans

Pride and patriotismwere the fashion of the day.

    Salutes were crisp andwith meaning.

Old uniforms were takenout of mothball, shaken outand worn with honor andhumility.

Last weeks rededicationof the Veterans Memorialmonument in Manistee wasguided by an All Americanspirit a red, white andblue generation-bondingsoul that defines whowe are, where were at andwhere were going.

This is humbling, retired doctor GeorgeWagoner of Manistee saidsoftly, almost whispering ashe stood within arms reachof the monument, itself. A former Naval officer whoserved nearly 40 years ago,Wagoner wore his dresswhite uniform to Saturdaysceremony.

    Humbling, he whis-pered again.

    THIS ISUNBELIEVABLE

With Memorial Driveblocked off to accommodateseating for the rededicationceremony, nearly every seatwas taken by veterans of one war or another, or by their family and friends.

Patriotic music wassoulfully and beautifully delivered by Navy veteranBeth Yeack.

    Korean War heroes

Duane Dewey, whowas presented with theCongressional Medal of Honor for his life-savingactions of fellow Marines, and Harry Conway, recipi-ent of the Army Silver Star, led the large crowd in thePledge of Allegiance.

Navy veteran and direc-or of theater and perform-ng arts at West Shoreommunity College, Dr.ick Plummer, delivered

Looking from the back of the monument with thenewly-etched names of Manistee County veterans inthe foreground, Bob Gancarz addresses the crowd atthe rededication ceremony.

the keynote address. Those who played criti-

cal roles in the refurbishingof the Veterans Memorialalso spoke, as did ManisteeMayor Richard Mack.

I want to thank allthose involved for their work on the memorial to

honor all who have served, and those currently serv-ing, for their service to ourcountry, Mack said. I would also like to thank allthe veterans here today, itis because of the sacrifices you made we are able toenjoy the freedom we havetoday.

Before the ceremony,as Mack stood back andlooked at the black stonetablet additions to the

monument tablets that bear the names of those who served in the military and are from ManisteeCounty he shook hishead in amazement.

This is unbelievable,he said. This is very, very nice something we all

should be proud of. Asmayor I get the opportunity to talk with many peoplefrom other areas of thestate and I cant begin totell you how many of themhave told me how muchthey enjoy coming to ourMemorial Day ceremony how nice and meaningfulit is.

he big city tell me they ish their community ould do the same. They

espect and appreciate theay we remember andonor our veterans here inanistee County. In the

ast five or six years or so,ur Memorial Day serviceas grown to become very pecial, and the additions of hese black tablets bearinghe names of our serviceen and women are going

o make our Memorial Day eremonies all the morepecial in the future.

As he stood in front of he large crowd Saturday, ack pointed at the monu-ent just behind him.

This memorial is aribute to all those whoave served our country,e said. (But) it is just oneart of the plans to add to

ts significance and beauty,nd after its competition itill be a place in our com-unity that will be visited

    or generations.

    HONORING

    ALL WHOSERVED

The names of any andall veterans from ManisteeCounty, from any era living and dead will beetched into both sides of theblack stone tablets. As thenames are added, more andmore tablets will be addedto each end of the original41-year-old gray stonemonument.

Thats one of the neatthings about what weredoing, said Bob Gancarz,a U.S. Navy veteran whohas coordinated efforts torefurbish the memorial.Anyone who ever lived inManistee County and whoserved honorably, can havetheir name etched intofuture tablets. There is avery minor etching costinvolved, but thats very small.

Its our hope and desirethis monument will neverbe completed. Itll grow as

our the list of our honored veterans grows.

Gancarz said those who would like to have theirname engraved onto themonument, or the nameof a loved one, need only contact officials at Oak Grove Funeral Homeand Cremation Center inManistee.

Jim Kieszkowski andhis crew have done a mag-nificent job with the new stone tablets and their etch-ings, Gancarz said. Hesput a tremendous amount

of work into this and wellforever appreciate it.During the ceremony

the names of 163 residentsfrom Manistee County who were killed in war 162military and one civilian were read, during whicha bell was rung after eachname was read. The warsincluded the Civil War,Spanish-American, World War I, World War I, Koreaand Vietnam. The lone civil-ian, Steve Hulett, was killedin 2004 when he worked asa civilian truck driver sup-porting U.S. troops in Iraq.
