In order to improve mobilitythrough the downtown Riversidearea, the California Department ofTransportation (Caltrans), in partner-ship with the Riverside CountyTransportation Commission, is con-structing one High OccupancyVehicle (HOV) lane, also called a car-pool lane, in each direction of StateRoute 91 (SR91) from Adams Streetto the 60/91/215 interchange in theCity of Riverside.SR91 is a primary truck and com-

muter route and carries approximate-ly 170,000 vehicles per day withinthe project area on the existing threelanes in each direction. The route isoften highly congested at current traf-fic levels, and with RiversideCounty’s population expected toreach 3.5 million by 2030, the vehiclepressure in this corridor will continueto increase. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) A newspaper investigation has turned up new questionsabout the proposed design of an Interstate 5 replacement bridge across the ColumbiaRiver. Documents show the project’s sponsors either didn’t know about or didn’t

accommodate concerns about the bridge’s height, the Oregonian newspaper report-ed June 8. For instance, the paper reported after seven years of work the planners didn’t

know until February that the 95-ft. (29 m) clearance would be too low for a U.S.Army Corps of Engineers dredge that’s 116 ft. (35 m) high. And the proposed bridge isn’t high enough for a growing number of companies

along the river that employ a total of 600 people making big equipment such as oil-drilling rigs that get sent downriver a few times a year.

Improvements to SR91 FreewayUnfolding in Stages, 2015 End in Sightfreeway through this widening project are designed to helpalleviate congestion through this hub. The cost of the project is estimated to be $232 million and

is funded by Measure A, Riverside County's half-cent salestax for transportation; federal funds; and $157 million inCorridor Mobility Improvement Account (CMIA) funds, thestate Proposition lB funding. Sema Construction Inc. ofLake Forest, Calif., is the prime contractor.The SR91 freeway serves the entire inland region as pri-

mary freeway connection to communities includingRiverside, Corona and San Bernardino. Over the past fewyears, significant investments have been made to improveSR91 with the reconstruction of the 60/91/215 interchangein downtown Riverside and the widening of the freewayfrom Adams Street to the Orange County line.One section of the freeway that has yet to be widened is

the 6-mi. (9.7 km) segment between Adams Street and the60/91/215 interchange. The addition of a carpool lanethrough this area will provide HOV continuity, improve traf-fic safety and improve the level of service of SR91 throughRiverside. Moreover, the widening of the freeway and itsensuing investment will lead to many other adjacentimprovements including improved on and off-ramps at 14th

Street and Arlington Avenue, relocating the 9th Street onramp to 10th Street and the replacement of a number ofbridges that cross the freeway. The overall result will be amodern transportation facility that serves motorists byadding capacity while easing access to and from the com-munity. The project anticipates creating an estimated 1,500jobs during its construction.A project of this magnitude takes place over a period of

several years. Work began on the SR91 HOV project in 2006with the completion of the project study report. The projectreport and environmental documents were completed inAugust 2007. Next came the final design and groundbreak-ing the spring of this year. The project will be complete by2015. Construction will be phased along the project corridorin order to minimize disruptions to traffic.Throughout the summer, crews will be working on clear-

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) The $37 million CaterpillarVisitors Center is on schedule to open the same dayas its next-door neighbor, the $100 million PeoriaRiverfront Museum. Save the date. It’s Oct. 20, 2012. With a world-class hotel tied in with the expanded

space at the Peoria Civic Center and the two newshiny metal-and-glass buildings that fill up MuseumSquare, “Peoria has some extremely positive thingsto talk about for residents and for people who cometo visit,” said Jim Baumgartner, director of publicaffairs of Caterpillar Inc. cords that hang temporarily beneath unfinished ceil-ings and exposed HVAC duct work. But the spacesare taking shape. The center will have exhibits and features that rep-

resent all facets of the Caterpillar experience; prod-uct development and design; a heritage gallery; atribute to workers around the world; a theater insidea life-size replica of a two-story tall, 380-ton 797mining truck; and a makeup of an actual constructionsite with at least 10 Caterpillar tractors and machineson display. A construction trailer will hold severalsimulators of Caterpillar products that visitors will beable to operate. An expanded Caterpillar merchan-dise store welcomes visitors at the front of the build-ing. The top floor, with the best views of the river,with floor to ceiling windows on the back of thebuilding, will have office space, a conference roomand kitchen and dining areas. It will not be accessi-ble to the general public. Baumgartner said the building was designed to be

used and seen by a variety of visitors — schoolgroups, Caterpillar dealers and customers and regu-lar folks off the street with an interest in the compa-ny, its people and its products. An admission pricehas not been set and it will include exemptions fordealers, customers and the elderly, Baumgartnersaid.

Caterpillar Plans $37M VisitorsCenter, Eyes October Grand Opening

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP)Expansion of the Port of Anchorageis on hold while engineers try to fig-ure out what’s wrong with the cur-rent design.“There is no construction plan for

this summer and the likelihood ofthere being any is very, very low,”said Steve Ribuffo, interim directorof the port. The city-owned portturned 50 last year. The AnchorageDaily News reported the municipal-ity for more than a decade hasworked to replace and expand it. The port’s dock is on corroded

piles that are expensive to maintain.Workers in 2009 began hammeringsteel replacement piles into theseabed to form a new dock but thepiles bent and jammed together. Theport project was supposed to be fin-ished by 2011 but is years behindschedule and hundreds of millions ofdollars over budget. The project in2005 was estimated to cost $350million. That has tripled to morethan $1 billion.

The municipality at the end ofMay assumed responsibility for theproject, taking over from the federalMaritime Administration. The city agreed in 2003 to let the

Maritime Administration take thelead on the project. The agency hiredIntegrated Concepts and ResearchCorp. to oversee construction. Anextension of the federal govern-ment’s contract with ICRC endedMay 31. The engineering firm CH2M Hill

is conducting an independent studyof the design under a contract withthe Army Corps of Engineers. It’sexpected to be completed by July orAugust, according to the Corps. The Corps is conducting its own

companion study and another engi-neering firm, AECOM, is conduct-ing a root cause analysis of whatwent wrong. Also, U.S. Department of

Transportation inspector general isauditing the MaritimeAdministration’s work.

No Construction Plannedin 2012 for Anchorage Port

$3B Project Will Address Commuter, Safety ConcernsThe bridge is expected to cost $3 billion and accommo-

date vehicle traffic, light-rail mass transit, bicyclists andpedestrians. The sponsors say it would help commuter andfreight traffic and be less vulnerable to earthquakes. The cur-rent bridge is two spans, one dating to 1917, the other to1958. Planners have already spent $140 million and redesigned

the proposed bridge once when outside analysts faulted aplan as risky and untested. Another redesign might add $100million in costs. The current bridge has a lift section that can provide clear-

ance of 178 ft. (54 m). Project sponsors said a 95-ft. clear-ance on a new bridge would accommodate all but a few riverusers. But, the Oregonian report shows, the project’s planners

overlooked the dredge and didn’t notice that more steel fab-rication companies were joining the likes of ThompsonMetal Fab, which operates in a former Kaiser shipyard onthe north bank of the Columbia in Vancouver, Wash. In October, the Coast Guard’s bridge administrator,

Randall Overton, said in a letter that the bridge design hadtoo little clearance, and that the project planners failed tomention the fabricators in an environmental review. In response, project leaders defended the design. “We have confidence that the technical work that has been

in process for the past several years is a sound body ofwork,” said Paula Hammond and Matt Garrett, heads of theWashington and Oregon transportation departments, in aNovember 2011 letter to the Coast Guard. “A project of this

magnitude must address the total array of users in the deci-sion making process and the 95-foot clearance meets thoseneeds.” In March, the Coast Guard’s opposition became public. The discovery that the

Corps of Engineers’ Yaquinadredge wouldn’t fit added toconcerns. “Think about if we had

another Mount St. Helens,with silt dumping into theriver, and the dredge couldn’tget under that bridge,” saidCapt. Mark McCadden, chiefof external affairs for theCoast Guard’s District 13 inSeattle. A higher bridge would

require a steeper grade overthe river, which engineers feltwas unacceptable for safetyreasons, and eliminating ahump in the span wouldentail extending it north andsouth. That would have sig-nificant impacts, such asmaking it difficult to connect to a state highway to the north.There also are concerns about traffic from nearby PearsonField, the municipal airport east of downtown Vancouver. Project officials are proposing compromises to salvage the

current design, such as persuading the fabricators to leavetheir hulking products partially assembled until they clear thebridge and then to finish assembly downriver. “You might as well bankrupt us,” responded Jason Pond,

CEO of steel fabricatorGreenberry Inc. ofCorvallis, which leasedspace along the river in2010. “I just don’t get it.This is a project that’s allabout jobs. I just assumedthat they wouldn’t kneecapthese companies that areoffering great jobs.” The corps is looking at

the feasibility of modifyingits dredge. Lowering itsmast, lights and other struc-tural elements could costmore than $500,000, saidspokeswoman Amy Echols. The project has long been

criticized by environmental-ists and others who say itwill contribute to globalwarming and just move traf-

fic problems south into Portland. Last summer, a reviewinstigated by Gov. John Kitzhaber and Oregon Treasurer TedWheeler found toll revenue projections inflated and trafficprojections outdated.

impose a tremendous new regulatory burdenon thousands of employers to fix a problemthat doesn’t appear to exist,” said Stephen E.Sandherr, the association’s chief executiveofficer. “The administration is trying to man-date away the symptoms of abroader problem: a stagnant econo-my that has left too manyAmericans out of work for toolong.”The new rules, which are being

proposed by the Office of FederalContract Compliance Programs(OFCCP), are designed to havefirms working on federal contractshire veterans and people with dis-abilities at the same rate at whichthey apply for positions. YetSandherr noted that federal officialshave failed to provide any data indicatingthat veterans or people with disabilities arebeing treated unfairly with regard to hiring.The rules also require firms to meet

sweeping new reporting requirements, estab-lish formal partnership agreements withcommunity outreach programs to help withrecruiting, and put in place new training pro-grams, among other costly new measures. Iffirms fail to meet the “goals” set out in thetwo proposed rules, they face federal auditsand potential debarment from working onfuture federal contracts.

Sandherr noted that construction firmsacross the country are already taking aggres-sive steps to recruit and hire veterans andpeople with disabilities. He noted, for exam-ple, that many firms participate in theHelmets to Hardhats training program thatprepares veterans for careers in construction.And firms across the country have created

apprentice, safety and training programsdesigned to recruit and prepare people withdisabilities.The association executive noted that the

construction industry alone has lost morethan 2 million jobs since 2008 and that theindustry’s unemployment rate was 14.5 per-cent; nearly double the national average andthe highest for any industry type. “The problem isn’t that construction firms

aren’t hiring veterans or people with disabil-ities, it is that they are too busy struggling tosurvive to do any hiring at all.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) A newspaper reported May27 that it has found records of an apparent defect in the con-struction of the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.Records provided by Caltrans last fall show that a builder

failed to report that a 19-ft. (5.8 m) section of concrete in thefoundation of the span’s signature tower had not hardenedbefore tests were conducted, according to The SacramentoBee. By failing to disclose the matter, the builder prevented fur-

ther examination or repair of the concrete, the newspapersaid. Kiewit-FCI-Manson, an Oakland-based joint venture,

built the foundation as part of a $177 million contract. It didnot provide the 2007 test results until after a Bee investiga-tion in November showed that a Caltrans employee skippedrequired test preparation for separate checks of the samefoundation and fabricated results on other Caltrans projects,the newspaper said. The newspaper said experts who reviewed concrete and

engineering records for The Bee questioned the ability of themain tower foundation to resist an extreme earthquake,which was the reason for building the new bridge. Caltrans said it believes the concrete has hardened and

that the bridge is sound and can withstand any anticipatedearthquake. Besides the concrete in question, the Bee’s examination

also found other problems with the piles, as well as with testdata. During its review of Caltrans records, The Bee said it also

found that two of the 13 piles that rise out of the Bay to holdup the main tower were not tested properly. Among the more than 20 errors found in test reports,

according to The Bee, were errors indicating what piles weretested, the test dates and pile measurements. Olson Engineering, a Colorado-based firm, which con-

ducted sonic tests of the piles, detected the problem concretein 2007, referring to it as “a batch of concrete that has notfully set at the time of testing” or “a very poor area of con-crete.” The company suggested new sonic tests, but no new tests

were conducted, according to Caltrans. When The Bee asked Olson president, Larry Olson about

the tests, he referred questions to Kiewit Corp., whichreferred questions to Caltrans. In an email to The Bee, Caltrans spokeswoman Tamie

McGowen said “substantial evidence” indicated that theabnormal concrete in one of the piles, referred to as Pile 3,eventually hardened properly. “We are confident in the structural integrity of the main

tower foundation and that the bridge will perform asdesigned to handle an extreme earthquake,” McGowenwrote. Caltrans plans to open the $6.5 billion structure by Labor

Day 2013 to serve an estimated 100 million drivers annual-ly.

Newspaper Finds Apparent Bay Bridge Work Defects

LOS ANGELES (AP) California willneed to build its high-speed train line inrecord time if it doesn’t want to risk losingfederal funds — indeed, it will have to be thefastest piece of transportation construction inU.S. history, experts said. Under a federal deadline, the California

High-Speed Rail Authority has untilSeptember 2017 to finish the first segment ofthe line in the Central Valley. In that time, theproject will need to acquire some 120 per-mits, 1,100 parcels of land and a huge work-force. At a projected cost of $6 billion,

California would be spending $2.7 million aday to finish on time, according to an esti-mate by John Popoff of ParsonsBrinckerhoff, a consulting firm workingwith the rail authority. The figure could reach $3.5 million a day

when the cost of buying land is added toconstruction, management and environmen-tal costs, construction experts told the LosAngeles Times. By comparison, the spending rate for the

$6.5 billion Bay Bridge replacement projectin Oakland is tagged at about $1.8 millionper day.

Construction of the Alameda Corridorfreight rail line in Los Angeles, completed in2002, also ran about $1.8 million per day. “It is a very aggressive plan,” said Manuel

Garcia, associate director at the ConstructionIndustry Institute affiliated with theUniversity of Texas at Austin. “It doesappear that it will be a challenge.” Delays caused by legal, political or tech-

nical problems could leave the first segmentuncompleted by the deadline, which poten-tially could halt the flow of federal money. The project is nine months behind sched-

ule in securing approval from the Federal

Railroad Administration, a consultant for therail authority said in a status report. Land acquisition also is facing problems,

Mark Ashley said. “It is dicey right now whether that is going

to hold up our construction or impact ourschedule,” he said. Contractors must submit bids by

September to build the first section, fromMadera to Fresno. The rail authority contractterms call for builders to face $1 million perday in penalties for failing to meet finaldeadlines after March 1, 2017.

The Chicago Pneumatic CPS 750 JD7Tier IVa rotary screw, portable compressorgenerates 750 CFM of air at 100 psi.Powered by a 200 hp (149 kW) John Deeresix-cylinder diesel engine, the CPS 750 JD7is Tier IVa compliant and designed forheavy-duty construction environments.The CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa utilizes a new

and improved air end with an advanced rotorprofile. This air end has been engineered toreduce the horsepower required to producethe 750 CFM, resulting in better fuel effi-ciency. The air pressure is adjustable from 58psi up to 100 psi.The John Deere engine uses exhaust gas

recirculation technology to reduce NOxemissions. The exhaust gases are cooled andreintroduced to the engine cylinders, result-ing in lower peak combustion temperature,reducing NOx formation. A particulate filteris then used to remove the increased amountof particulate matter in order to meet the newTier IVa emission standards. The electronically controlled, water-

cooled engine, variable speed fan and newChicago Pneumatic air end reduces fuel con-sumption to 8.2 gal. (31 L) per hour at 100percent load — a significant reduction infuel consumption. In addition, with the 78-gal. (295 L) fuel capacity the operator getsmore than a full 8-hour day at full load.The new CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa fits clean-

ly into a single-axle, fast-track enclosure.This new sound-dampening enclosure ismore compact than competitively sizedcompressor packages, according to the man-ufacturer. The CPS 750 JD7 Tier IVa fea-tures an A-frame drawbar, surge hydraulicbrakes and torsion bar suspension, whichprovides durability, stability and optimalroad performance when in tow. The CPSalso is available in a support-mounted con-figuration.The steel, gull-wing enclosures also pro-

Fog System Design Helps Improve Terex Bid-Well 4800 PaverToday’s Terex Bid-Well

4800 bridge paver boastsnew features that improvethe machine’s flexibility andease of operation. The newfogging system offersadjustable and removablespray nozzles that make thesystem even more user-friendly. Located on eachside of the paving rollers, atthe burlap drag and drag pan,the independently adjustablenozzles can be positioned todirect the fog where it isrequired to adjust for wind,mix conditions or to certainspecifications. New polyeth-ylene tubing eliminates cor-rosion within the system toimprove system uptime,according to the manufactur-er. The 4800’s new skewable

power crown adjuster can bemounted in-line on a straightpaver or positioned on theframe at the skew when con-tractors are paving deckswith a skew angle. Thisoptional system simplifiesmaking crown adjustmentswhen paving at extendedmachine widths. The powercrown adjust allows theoperator to make quickcrown adjustments on-the-fly as the paving carriagereaches the end of the paver. Two new 23 hp (17 kW) evapo-

rative emissions (EVAP) Tier IV-compliant gas engines power the4800. One engine powers machinefunction and movement, while thesecond engine provides dedicatedpower to the paving carriage formore consistent paving operation.The new engines meet currentemissions standards, improve theoperating environment around themachine and provide more fuelefficiency than previous enginemodels.

The Terex Bid-Well 4800 paverdisplayed at World of Concrete inLas Vegas was equipped with sev-eral options that tailor-suit thepaver to meet job site conditions.The available 15-in (38.1-cm)Rota-Vibe system on the showmachine’s paving carriage is 30percent larger than the standardsystem. This provides longermachine advancements, advanta-geous when paving streets andhighways. The paver’s two double-flighted

augers efficiently meter the con-crete in front of the paving car-riage. Dual, 5-ft. (1.5-m) longpaving rollers provide an improvedfinish to the concrete surface. Thepaving carriage on display wasequipped with the available dualdrag pan arrangement, which helpscontractors achieve a better con-crete seal and enables the pans todrag directly to the side of the slab,according to the manufacturer.The show unit featured two leg

options available to paving con-

tractors. By offering zero-clear-ance paving, the machine’s option-al swing leg design gives pavingcontractors an edge when pavingin tight site conditions, such asoverlays next to live traffic lanesand new bridge construction adja-cent to the existing bridge. Anavailable pivot leg design for the4800 improves paving efficiencywhen working on severe crossslopes of 6 to 8 percent. Thisoption allows the leg to be pivotedto a true perpendicular position,

removing stresses on the side railsand eliminating the need for extrashoring. With its 48-in. (122 cm) truss

frame depth, the 4800 offers stan-dard paving widths ranging from36 ft. to in excess of 170 ft. (51.8m). The 4800 paver display unitwas set to a 36-ft. (11.0-m) pavingwidth and was equipped with polydrive bogies for additional tractionwhen paving steep grades. For more information, visit

Volvo Construction Equipment has entered into astrategic alliance with Carlson Paving Products in aneffort to further serve asphalt paving market needsand offer additional screed options for Volvo pavers.Through the agreement, the Wedge-Lock screed willundergo design updates along with manufacturingand field support by Carlson Paving Products. Thescreeds will be sold exclusively through Volvo deal-ers in North America.In addition, an OEM supplier agreement between

Volvo Construction Equipment and Carlson PavingProducts now makes the existing line of Carlson EZhighway class screeds available on new Volvo asphaltpavers and through Volvo dealers in North America.Included in the agreement are the 8- and 10-ft. (2.4and 3 m) EZIII and EZIV Series screeds, which canbe factory-installed on Volvo pavers. Carlson PavingProducts will be responsible for field support of theEZ screeds. The Wedge-Lock screed is designed for use with

Volvo 6000 Series asphalt pavers. The electricallyheated self-contained vibratory screed will pave abasic 10-ft. wide asphalt mat with crowning capabili-ty at the mid-point. Power Crown is standard on theWedge-Lock and adjusts from a 3-in. (7.6 cm) posi-tive crown to a 0.75-in. (1.9 cm) negative crown.The paving screed is available in two basic config-

urations — a standard screed and a screed with 3/6hydraulic extensions. The basic screed and all option-al extensions are equipped with bolt-on replaceable,abrasion-resistant, 0.5-in. (1.3 cm) screed plates. Allheating elements also are easily removable withoutrequiring removal of the screed plate.The electric-heated screed incorporates advanced-

design heating elements positioned in direct contactwith the upper surface of the main screed plate todeliver even, controllable heat. Service-friendlydesign allows heating elements to be replaced withoutdropping the screed plate.Control consoles on each section of the main

screed provide effortless electrical switching controlfor extension, retraction, crown and slope. The con-soles also allow for auger/conveyor speed range andon/off override. Crew comfort is assured with newfeatures, including conveniently located cup holdersand lockable storage trays.Fully adjustable end gates have been updated on

the new paving screed to allow for better joint control.An option also is now available for heated end plateson the Wedge-Lock screed.The Wedge-Lock screed with 3/6 extensions has

two options — a round nose or mini-shoe screedplate. The round nose screed plate is 1.5 in. (3.8 cm)wide and uses curved strike-offs. The mini-showscreed plate is 6.25 in. (15.8 cm) wide and uses flatstrike-offs.The new Wedge-Lock screeds will be manufac-

tured by Carlson Paving Products at its productionfacility in Tacoma, Wash.

Dynapac Unveils Fifth Generationof CA Single Drum Vibratory Rollers

Dynapac USA has introduced four new models of its CA-series single drum vibratory rollers. The CA5000, CA5500,CA6000 and CA6500 have been equipped with a number ofenhancements over previous models, including optimized drumamplitude, automatic bouncing control and an overall designthat makes it easier to service the equipment.Compaction is delivered by the new models utilizing drum

amplitude of .083 in. (.2 cm.) This increased force allows rockfill to be compacted in layers almost 9 ft. (2.7 m) thick with rocksizes up to 3 ft. (.9 m) in diameter. It also requires fewer passesto reach compaction specifications.Automatic bouncing control measures feedback from the

drum and eliminates drum bouncing or over compacting. Thisnew feature improves compaction performance while extendingthe useful life of the equipment by eliminating drum double-jump, which could lead to premature failure of machine com-ponents, according to the manufacturer. The CA6000D model also features a governor to avoid com-

pacting at a too high a speed. A full package of design features enhances the serviceability

of all models. The new cross-mounted engine not only offerseasy access for service and maintenance, it also providesenhanced weight distribution and reduces overall machinelength. The hydraulic pumps, arranged in line with the engine,are easily accessed for servicing.Another key new feature is the “ECO mode” fuel conserva-

tion system that minimizes fuel consumption as well as carbondioxide emissions by ensuring that the roller does not consumemore power than needed at any given time. The new modelsalso give attention to enhanced safety features with electronicdrive control, which provides a “quick brake” function and a tilt

indicator. Dynapac’s anti-spin traction system ensures consistenton-the-go traction and gradeability. The combustion air intake is placed on the engine hood with

the outlet running down the sides, thereby keeping the inlet airas clean as possible. When combined with the ejector exhaustoutlet, this placement also serves to minimize noise levels. The new CA rollers have static linear loads of 280 pounds per

linear inch (pli) on the CA5000, 310 pli on the CA5500, 335 plion the CA6000 and 365 pli on the CA6500. All four models areequipped with interim Tier IV engines from Deutz, and can usea mix of biodiesel and regular diesel fuel. Optional features on the new rollers include• Service interval alert on instrument panel indicates when a

particular service is required• Sustainability package: an rpm management system,

biodegradable fill-for-life hydraulic fluid, 50 hours service kit,electrical engine block heater and working lights with LEDlamps (CA6000D only.)• Air-conditioned cabs with spin-around seat and steering

module, offering movement of up to 180 degrees without stress-ing neck or body. Spin-around seats also are available as a stand-alone option, without the cab.• Productivity software, including Dynapac CompBase, pro-

viding task planning, execution and analysis, and CostCtrl web-based software for life-cycle cost control and increased machineavailability.The new CA rollers are available in standard models with a

CEI Enterprises has expanded its product range to includeequipment for virtually any asphalt application. This productrange extends from CEI’s asphalt tanks and hot oil heaters tocomplete hot mix asphalt plants, heating and cooling sys-tems for liquid asphalt, blending systems for modifiedasphalts, heating systems for asphalt terminals, asphalt emul-sion plants, emissions control equipment and more.

Hot Mix Asphalt PlantsCEI Enterprises offers two lines of complete, hot-mix

asphalt plants: Nomad and RAP King. Nomad asphalt plants, are highly portable and are avail-

able in 80, 130, and 175 tph (72.5, 118 and 158 t) capacities.

All are available in primary and advanced designs. The pri-mary design features a dryer/mixer unit with integral aggre-gate bins and wet scrubber. The advanced design uses largeraggregate bins mounted on an independent chassis, as wellas a portable baghouse. RAP King asphalt plants feature a counter-flow drum

mixer capable of producing mixes with up to 50 percentRAP content with no added fuel cost. Production capacity is180 tph (163 t).

Asphalt Heating & Cooling SystemsThese systems include asphalt tanks with coils for heat

transfer oil, hot oil heater, insulated piping, chiller and asso-

ciated temperature controls. They are used in applicationswhere liquid asphalt is used in a production process wherethe asphalt becomes super-heated, and unused asphalt isreturned to the storage system. Initially, liquid asphalt in a storage tank is kept heated by

heat transfer oil from the hot oil heater. This “hot oil” flowsthrough coils in the asphalt tank, transferring heat to thestored asphalt to keep it in a usable, liquid state. Later, whenunused, super-heated asphalt is returned to its storage tank, itis cooled by a similar method. The heat transfer oil is pumped through the chiller, reduc-

ing its temperature. Then, the cooled heat transfer oil ispumped through the coils in the asphalt tank, drawing heatout of the asphalt until its temperature is decreased to thedesired level.

Blending Systems for Modified AsphaltsSince 1991, CEI Enterprises has produced asphalt-rubber

blending systems. Modern controls provide blending with asimple-to-use interface. PLC-based, “recipe-driven” logic,simplifies operator functions. CEI Enterprises also repairs,upgrades and rebuilds AR systems produced by other manu-facturers. In addition to asphalt-rubber systems, CEIEnterprises also offers SBS polymer blending systems forproducing polymer-modified asphalt cement.

Heating Systems for Asphalt TerminalsAsphalt terminals require a substantial amount of heat in

order to maintain millions of gallons of liquid asphalt at ausable temperature. CEI Enterprises produces heating sys-tems designed specifically for this purpose. These systemsfrequently include twin hot oil heaters that can be used inunison or independently. The heaters feature a high Btu/hroutput, (typically 5-million Btu/hr) or more. The heatersraise the temperature of the heat transfer oil that is pipedthrough coils in the bottom of bulk liquid storage tanks. Heatis transferred from the coils to asphalt stored in the tank, rais-ing it to the desired temperature and then maintaining thattemperature. CEI Enterprises also manufactures the piping and heating

coils used in bulk liquid storage tanks.

Asphalt Emulsion PlantsIn recent years, CEI Enterprises has worked closely with

many asphalt emulsion suppliers to provide storage tanks,blending tanks, piping systems and temperature controls.Expanding on this base, CEI Enterprises now offers com-plete emulsion plants. Highly configurable to meet the needsof local markets, CEI Enterprises asphalt emulsion plantsblend liquid asphalt with a variety of additives. These emul-sified asphalts are then stored in holding tanks prior to load-out.

Emissions Control EquipmentIn the western United States, where CEI Enterprises is

located, is a center point for some of the most stringent airquality and emissions regulations in the nation. As a majorprovider of asphalt equipment in this region, CEI Enterpriseshas become a market leader in emissions control equipment.This equipment includes standard-duty and extreme-dutyvent condensers that reduce blue smoke emissions fromasphalt tanks, low-NOx emission hot oil heaters, and low-emission drum mixers that are also available with low-NOxburners.

Bobcat has announced its 2012 lineup oflight construction products, featuring arevamped line of air compressors, generatorsand pressure washers, as well as compactionequipment, including plate compactors andupright rammers. Powered by fuel-efficient,Honda engines, these models are designed toprovide reliable performance for job sitedevelopment and cleanup operations.

Air CompressorsThree portable air compressor units sup-

ported by durable frames and strong cylin-ders provide power for pneumatic tools. The8-gal. (30 L) models feature cast iron com-pressors and puncture-proof tires. Two sin-gle-stage compressor pumpmodels, including a 5-gal.(19 L) unit offering 4.1 cfmat 100 psi and an 8-gal.model delivering 13.1 cfm at100 psi, make up the smallerunits. Rounding out the aircompressor line is an 8-gal.two-stage unit that provides17.2 cfm at 175 psi.

GeneratorsA team of three generators

with outputs of 3,000, 4,000and 7,500 watts providepower for remote electricitygeneration needs. All modelsfeature low-oil shutdown,large low-tone mufflers toreduce noise andUSDA/USFS-approvedspark arrestors. The heavy-duty framesincrease durability, yet the lightweightdesign can be easily wheel- mounted ortransferred to vehicles for transporting.

Pressure WashersThe redesigned tire-mounted Bobcat pres-

sure washer line features two portable coldwater gasoline direct-drive models with3,000 and 3,400 psi, respectively, for routinecleanups and wash jobs. Those units arejoined by one portable hot water gasolinedirect-drive model delivering 3,500 psi, andtwo electric models; a direct-drive unit thatoffers 1,500 psi and a belt-drive model thatoperates at 3,000 psi.

Vibratory Plate CompactorsEngineered with high centrifugal forces,

the BC15, BC19 and BC22 single-directionvibratory plate compactors effectively and

efficiently compact granular soils andcrushed aggregates to depths of 12 to 16.5 in.(30.5 to 42 cm). The units also are equippedwith a water sprinkler system with remov-able water tanks for the compaction of hotmix asphalt.

The BC15 delivers 3,400 lbs. of centrifu-gal force from a compact frame using a 17-by-22-in. (43 by 56 cm) plate. The BC19 hasa 20-by-22-in. (51 by 56 cm) plate and com-pacts with 4,000 pounds of centrifugal force.The BC22 has a 22-by-22-in. plate andoffers the highest compaction rate with5,700 lbs. of centrifugal force. These com-paction units range in operating weight from

150 to 220 lbs., allowing them to remainhighly maneuverable and portable.

Upright RammersTwo upright rammer models, the BR55

and BR72, offer a low center of gravity anda lightweight design for backfilling and nar-row trench compaction. The rammers’impact force is applied to material by adurable steel-plated wooden foot that meas-ures 9 by 13 in. (23 by 33 cm) on the BR55and 11 by 13 in. (28 by 33cm) on the BR72.The BR55 provides an impact force of 2,600lbs., while the BR72 delivers 3,400 lbs. offorce. Both ramming tools provide powerfulcompaction in a small, self-balanced designthat stands under 44 in. (112 cm) off theground.
