Cleaning Well Filter

Purpose The purpose of this standard is...

Process  Removing and Rinsing the Filter

Step 1: Turn Off Filter Inlet Valve (Video Review is Here) Turn the Inlet Valve to the ‘off’ position (horizontally across pipe). Closing this valve allows you to isolate the filter before the filter casing is taken off; which prevents the water from spraying out.

Step 2: Close Volunteer House Water Valve & Inspect Bypass Valve (Video Review is Here)

1. Turn valve to the ‘off’ position (horizontally across pipe). Closing this valve keeps the city and volunteer water from flowing into the filter. The filter area is now isolated. No water is flowing to the houses, but the pump is still running and water runs at the pump’s spigot.

2. Make sure the bypass valve is in the off position (vertical position). [Jon: need explanation of bypass valve’s function]

Step 3: Press Pressure Relief Valve. (Video Review is Here) Press down on red button. This allows any pressure within the filter casing to escape.

Step 4: Loosen Casing With Filter Wrench (Video Review is Here)

Place filter wrench over filter casing while bracing the pipes with legs as shown. Make sure the ‘teeth’ of the wrench fit into the ‘grooves’ on the filter casing before turning in ‘clockwise’ direction.

Step 5: Carefully Remove Filter Casing (Video Review is Here)

1. Carefully pull down the filter casing to avoid any sediment going up and into the pipes.

2. Take the casing over to the cleaning area (side of well the where spigot is located),

3. Remove the filter, and dump out the water. Make sure you keep up with the two washers and the ‘O’ ring.

Step 6: Rinse Filter (Video Review is Here)

1. Place the filter on the ‘rinsing tree stub’. 2. Turn on the water at the spigot. Rinse with water hose as to get as much sediment off the filter as possible

(see last image example); which is between three to five minutes. 3. You’ve done it. Great Job.

Reinstalling the Filter (Reversing Process Above Steps 1-5)

Step 1: Place Filter Back in Casing (Video Review is Here) 1. Press each washer onto the ends of the filter in the ring-shaped space (see image in Step 6 of Rinsing the

Filter). 2. Place the filter down into the casing making sure the center area with washer rests on the central pillar

area. 3. Place O-ring into the groove at top of casing.

Step 2: Screw in Filter Casing (Video Review is Here)

1. Place the filter casing back up into the housing/holder (need term) and check to see it is vertically positioned to align with the grooves.

2. As you are holding up the casing, turn it in a counter-clockwise rotation. Once the casing ‘takes’ with the housing’s screw grooves it should screw back in smoothly. Never force the casing to screw back in.

3. Place filter wrench over filter casing while bracing the pipes with legs as shown. (opposite direction as in Step 4 of Rinsing the Filter). Make sure the ‘teeth’ of the wrench fit into the ‘grooves’ on the filter casing before turning in a ‘counter-clockwise’ direction (also look back at Step 4 for picture).

Step 3: Turn on Well Water and House Water Valves (Video Review is Here)

1. First turn the Well Water valve to the ‘on’ position (running parallel to the pipe itself). 2. Next turn the House Water valve to the ‘on’ position (also parallel to the pipe). You should have heard

water flushing back in through the pipes. Now the water will flow back to the houses. 3. You’ve done it. Great job again.
