Welcome to Stellenbosch University (SU). It will be an exciting new chapter in your life and we are happy to be part of your journey. Take every
event and training opportunity that the SU has to offer, and use the available support services and development opportunities to make a success of your studies.
The Division Student Affairs is committed to play an integrating role in establishing and expanding a safe, healthy and balanced environment where all Maties can achieve their full potential. We ensure that the interests of every student will receive the necessary attention within the university community. Therefore, please visit our offices in Bosman Street at any time.
The Division Student Affairs has two centres of which the aim of both is to deal and solve any inquiry, problem or issue as soon as possible. These centres are the Centre for Student Structures and Communities (SSC) and the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD). The Division of Student Affairs is furthermore largely responsible for the coordination of welcoming new students.
Your cluster, residence or PSO ward will play an important role in how you experience Stellenbosch. It must first be a place where you feel safe and at home and that enables you to tackle your academic activities in a focused way. Each residence and PSO ward has a residence or visiting head, a House Committee (HC) and a group of mentors to support you, and all of these people form part of a cluster where a ResEd coordinator is the head.
The welcoming programme is a fully integrated programme with academic, social as well as general aspects in the pursuit of a common goal – to let new students as soon and as effectively as possible feel at home in their new environment and prepare them for successful study. Through this programme, we want every new student to have a meaningful and memorable welcoming – hence our dedicated pursuit and practice of the values of hospitality, friendliness and human dignity.
We trust that your experience as a new Matie will be positive, enriching and unforgettable. Always remember that you have come here to be academically successful. As you pursue this part of your academic journey, choose from the menu of activities those that will contribute to your positive growth, academic success and total learning experience. And remember, you’re not alone.

Welkom by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US).
Jou kluster, koshuis of PSO-wyk sal ’n belangrike rol speel in hoe jy Stellenbosch beleef.

New students join a campus that has been organised into listening, learning and living communities (LLL). The clusters, residences, organisation for non-residence students (PSO wards), mentor groups, tutor groups and the listening, learning and living houses for senior students all form part of LLL. An LLL purpose is to integrate the out-of-class experience with the in-class experience to ensure academic success and a well-rounded education for students.

Fietse Huur ’n Matie-fiets of bring jou eie fiets kampus toe.
Besoek www.findalift.co.za.
Navrae US Kliëntediens, tel 021 808 9111
Navrae Desiree Chinasamy-Dampies, tel 021 808 5457 of
[email protected].

Tydens jou aankoms by jou betrokke koshuis of PSO, sal ’n mentor aan jou toegedeel word. Indien jy egter nie ’n mentor ontvang nie, of enige navrae het, kontak gerus Kliëntediens by tel 021 808 9111 of [email protected].

IMPORTANT IMPORTANT general information general information
PARKING AND APPLICATION FOR PARKINGParking on the Stellenbosch and the Tygerberg campus is limited. Instead of bringing your own vehicle to campus, rather make use of one of the following:
Bicycles
Rent a Matie bike or bring your own bicycle to campus.
Register your bicycle free of charge with Campus Security (in order to get access to safe bicycle sheds and to help find the owners of stolen bicycles).
Campus Shuttle Service
See the SU website for the specific routes and times of the service.
Lift clubs
Rather club together than using your own transport. Join Findalift, a private and free on-line service providing Maties with safe lift opportunities. Register on Findalift’s closed website and find a lift with someone travelling the same route as you. Visit www.findalift.co.za.
Parking
The various types of parking on university grounds and the associated costs are available on the SU webpage at http://www0.sun.ac.za/sustainability/pages/english/home.php.
Students will be able to apply for parking and register their vehicles during student registration. Please note that a successful application does not guarantee a specific parking bay.
The annual parking levy will be debited against the student’s account.
Students must note that application for access to parking can be done electronically throughout the year. Allocations in terms of reserved parking at residences and other SU housing, however, take place once-off at the beginning of the year based on applications received as well as the specific allocation criteria of the residences and SU housing.
Only registered vehicles may be parked on university grounds.

CONSTRUCTION ON CAMPUSStellenbosch University is constantly busy improving facilities on campus for the benefit of staff and students. For this reason, please take note that during the academic year building will possibly be taking place in and around the accommodation facilities on campus.
There is currently a new housing project planned for execution during 2016 in the Monica, Harmonie and Wilgenhof precinct. Furthermore, continuous maintenance and upgrade projects are also continuing as usual, for example the phased upgrading of bathrooms in Serruria, Erica and Nemesia, that will continue until early 2017. A similar project is currently planned for Huis Francie van Zijl for execution during 2016 at the Tygerberg campus. Smaller projects are also planned for Minerva, Heemstede and Nerina.
There are currently also plans to launch a project at Goldfields student housing complex during 2016, with the main objectives of improving the current dining-hall and kitchen as well as access to these facilities.
Because continuous building is happening on several terrains on campus and initially everyone is affected negatively in some way, no “discount” regarding residence tariffs will be considered. The question of ‘who will be given discount and who not?’ will result in a situation too tricky to handle. Students and their parents can be assured, however, that the well-being, safety and academic progress of students are always priority and that the University will do everything possible to limit inconvenience as much as possible.
During times of building all possible arrangements will be made for the safety of students and their belongings. For bigger projects, regular meetings will be held to which representatives of the residences will be invited in order to keep them updated on all matters and ensure that students are inconvenienced as little as possible.
No noisy work will be done during the first exam opportunity. In the week leading up to the start of the first exam opportunity, restrictions will be placed on working hours to ensure the residents are given sufficient opportunity to prepare for the upcoming examination.

All statutory requirements regarding occupational safety will be adhered to and the contract team and workings of each project will be clearly identifiable. The safety of our students is of cardinal importance.

MENTORS
Mentors are senior students who are appointed in residences and PSO’s to assist new students with their adjustment to university life. Each new student should have access to a mentor. The mentor already plays an important role during the welcoming period with general assistance regarding university life queries and psychosocial support. Through the mentor, the new students have the opportunity to partake in the Wellness programme of the University, which aims to enhance the wellness of students throughout the year. When you arrive at your residence or PSO, a mentor should be allocated to you. Should you not be allocated a mentor, or have any queries, please contact Client Services at tel 021 808 9111 or [email protected].
PSO TRANSPORT SERVICE DURING WELCOMINGStudents who are not living in residences and are allocated to Private Student Organisations (PSO’s) are encouraged to take part in the welcoming programme of their specific PSO. As the programmes end in the evening, a free transport service is available to all PSO students to ensure they get home safely. The transport service leaves at 21:00 and 22:00 from Campus Security in Merriman Avenue and will get students safely to their homes in Stellenbosch and specifically indicated drop-off points in surrounding areas. The drop-off points where students will be taken to, are the following: the SAPS-offices at Bellville, Athlone, Mitchells Plain, Paarl, Kuilsriver and Somerset West, as well as Brent Oil in Idas Valley, the Engen garage in Cloetesville and the security gate at Welgevonden (Stellenbosch). Students must please indicate beforehand, by 11 January, whether they would be using this service, as well as indicate the specific drop-off point. Please let your House Committee or Inge Barac at [email protected] know.
There will also be sleepover facilities in the PSO Clubhouse for students who are not able to go home for an evening. The House Committee of the specific PSO will be able to provide you as a student with more information about this service. Any other queries can be directed to Inge Barac on [email protected].

INSURANCE: STUDENTS AND THEIR PROPERTY “A safe campus for all” – these words give expression to a core aspiration of Stellenbosch University (SU). Not only does SU conduct a continuous campaign to make staff, students and visitors aware of potential risks that may threaten their safety and/or health, but where necessary, the Division Risk Management and Campus Security is made use of, as well as the South African Police Service, to continually enforce and monitor security measures. Students participate in academic trips, laboratory experiments, sport and other voluntary activities where they can be exposed to risks. The University takes all reasonable measures to protect students and their property when they participate in these activities and during their daily campus life. It is however impossible to eliminate all risks. Since it is not possible for the University to protect students and their property against all risks, students therefore participate in all University related activities on their own risk. The University does not take out personal insurance against accidents, medical insurance or any other insurance on behalf of students. The University would like to draw attention to the fact that each student is responsible for his/her own insurance and therefore recommends that he/she takes out sufficient comprehensive insurance for his/her personal possessions, as well as insurance against accidents and/or medical insurance.

This service aims to contribute to, and enhance, a positive and welcoming “Matie experience” for all first-years and their parents and guardians.

Maties should take the same safety precautions in Stellenbosch than elsewhere in South Africa. Thousands of mobile phones, computers and vehicles attract criminals.Tips:• Never walk or jog alone, especially not at night
• Keep your phone and valuables out of sight
• Carry a whistle or pepper spray at all times
• Power outages are unpredictable: carry a torch
• Choose the safest route, even if it is not the shortest
• Avoid isolated areas when you exercise
• Be alert! Look around you and peel your eyes and ears
• Keep a safe distance if a motorist asks for directions
• If something looks suspect, change direction
• Be a caring Matie: accompany a friend
• Property on a car seat is tempting to a thief. Lock it in the boot.
Safety escort at night: If you need to move between campus buildings, or from a building to your car after dark (20:00 – 05:00), a security officer will escort you. Call 021 808-4666 and wait for the officer to join you.
Safest routes: Bosman and Victoria streets are the safest routes. At night a security officer is on duty in the mobile security kiosk on the Dagbreek corner.
Shuttle service: On week days the shuttle service runs on the hour from the periphery to central campus. At night the shuttle service runs on the hour from 18:00 to 02:00 from the parking area between the Neelsie Student Centre and the Merensky building. The buses run up to a 6 kilometre radius from the central campus. This service is available from Monday to Sunday during class and exam periods. You need your student card to make use of this service. Check the safety website for more information.

Sentrum vir Studente-voorligting en
-ontwikkeling (SSVO)T he CSCD is a dynamic, student-centred psychological-
development and support service available to registered students. The service is scientifically accountable, and, for
this purpose, carefully selected specialists, representative of the different components of Psychology and related disciplines, are involved on a permanent or part-time basis to meet the various needs of the University community. Therefore, the Centre makes use of the services of psychologists, a psychiatrist, a social worker and a reading specialist, among others.
Some of the above functions are highlighted below: Regular work sessions are presented on the development
and optimisation of life skills (for example study skills and stress management). The work sessions are adapted regularly in accordance with contemporary research findings and local needs analyses. (These sessions form part of the continuous application of ALFA, the Afrikaans acronym for Academic Support and Facilitation of Adaptation.)
We also offer academic and/or career counselling for students who are uncertain about their degree programme and/or module choices, and who wish to receive further academic counselling and/or support in the course of the academic year.
Our Unit for Graduand Career Services is specifically geared towards preparing students systematically for their future career choices and the subsequent job search and application processes. For example, students may receive guidance from the Unit on how to select a career and develop within it, how to compile a curriculum vitae, and how to cope with a job interview. (Workshops in this regard form part of the programme called OMEGA, the Afrikaans acronym for Developmental Mechanisms for Effective World-of-Work Preparation.)
Furthermore, the Centre follows an open-door policy for individual, professional and confidential assistance or psychotherapy for depression, high stress levels, substance abuse, relationship or family problems, etc.
A 24-hour crisis service is also available. Another part of the Centre’s service offering is support to
students with special learning needs (disabilities).
As all facilitators are registered as professional practitioners with their respective professional boards, absolute confidentiality is guaranteed.
All support sessions are normally provided free of charge to registered students to help ensure confidentiality.

Centre for Student Counselling and
Development (CSCD)
leerbehoeftes (gestremdhede).
Omdat alle fasiliteerders by hulle onderskeie beroepsrade as professionele praktisyns geregistreer is, word streng vertroulikheid gewaarborg.

T he First-year Academy (FYA) is a university-wide initiative that aims to improve first-year students’ success rates, with the aid of a variety of research
activities, programmes and projects. Each faculty has programme-specific interventions that contribute towards improved academic achievement of all first-year students. Using electronic communication systems, a variety of monitoring mechanisms offer early warning to students and refer them to appropriate assistance. In the wider context of student life, such as in residences and PSO wards, other initiatives focus on the development, support and preparation of the whole student for successful entry into the working world.
WHO IS IT AIMED AT? All new first-year students, as well as all faculty staff and staff of divisions involved with first-year students. The FYA aims to support all first-year students – especially with regards to academic success. Do not wait, ask for assistance before
it is too late! The FYA hopes you experience a happy and productive time of study at Stellenbosch!
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW NOW ALREADY?Extended Degree Programmes offer selected students the opportunity to strengthen their study base with a view to ultimate success. Faculties that offer Extended Degree Programmes are AgriSciences; Economic and Management Sciences; Medicine and Health Sciences; Engineering; Arts and Social Sciences, and Science (see contact details below for any questions regarding the Extended Degree Programmes).
All first-years participate in early assessment. To this end, they will complete a form of assessment in all first-year modules in the first six weeks of the academic year in order to form an early impression of their academic standing. There fore, it is important that you give your studies your full attention from the outset, so that early assessment offers a true reflection of your progress.
SOCIETIES
The societies at Stellenbosch University make up the largest and most diverse out-of-class activities on campus. This includes just about everything from dancing to debating!
The societies offer you everything you could want to have outside
of class:
it is a way to meet new people and make friends with others
that share interests with you;
give outlet to your passions, whether for animals, children,
people, philosophy or community interaction;
gain new skills and run courses to further yourself; and
join a community that can offer you support.
So, have a look in the back of the Matie Diary or go to the
following website: http://www.sun.ac.za/english/students/student-

Student Centre (Neelsie).
VERENIGINGS
wat dieselfde belangstellings as jy deel;
dit is ’n uitlaat vir jou passies, hetsy vir diere, kinders, mense,
filosofie of gemeenskapsinteraksie;

I n 2011 a new body, MAD² (Making A Decision 2 Make A Difference) was formed. The primary goal of this student initiative is to raise funds for the student-run projects of
Matie Community Service (MCS) a non-profit organisation which radically assists Stellenbosch communities in need. MAD² takes place throughout the year with events happening each term. Most events takes place during the Welcoming Period, which is the time when the first-year students are introduced to campus. 2016 is the fifth year of existence of MAD2 and we are aiming to make the biggest impact yet on MCS that campus has ever seen. Be sure to attend all of our events in support of MCS and get ready to have the time of your life!
Nedbank Dream Launch 21 January This event will be the start of an exciting welcoming week. First-year students will each receive a helium-filled balloon on which they can write their dreams. The more or less 5 000 balloons will be released into the air during the official opening in the Danie Craven stadium. The aim of this event is to create a sense of unity and belonging and also to give students a chance to think about their dreams and to set their own objectives. This also shows the rest of Stellenbosch that the new Maties are in town!
Trapkarre – 23 January Trapkarre is an exciting new tradition which takes place during Welcoming week. Each partnership will receive a trapkar (or “peddle-car”), for a two hour speed-race around our beautiful Stellenbosch campus. The trapkarre will be raced on a specified route from 13:00 – 15:00, supported by students and the com munity on the side-lines. Along with the Societies’ Fair, MFM street party and Carnival, this festive event is definitely going to be a fun-filled time for everyone.
Social Impact morning – 28 January Social Impact is one of the most important segments of the Welcoming Programme, because Social Impact, through MCS, is the entire reason behind MAD2. MCS is the beneficiary of all the funds raised by MAD². During this morning, which will take place from 09:00 – 12:00 there will be community interaction and presentations regarding MCS.
Vensters Street Theatre – 29 January Vensters is one of the most colourful evenings you will ever experience on Stellenbosch campus. The welcoming partnerships are given the challenge of impressing spectators and judges with interesting story lines and dance routines in a short 10-minute street theatre production! The productions are repeated for the duration of the evening so that the public can attend all of the welcoming pairs’ performances. Vensters 2016 will be taking place from 18:00 until 23:00. Your wristband will
cost R20 and will be valid for all 18 productions.
The winners of Vensters will be announced on the night between 23:30 and 00:00 at the Vensters Festival at Wilgenhof Mens’ Residence.
Shavethon – Term 1Are you bold enough to go bald? The Shavethon is a new addition to the MAD2 family which promotes residence/PSO traditions while receiving MAD points. This event promotes the fight against cancer.
Big Bleed – Term 2 Be a hero and donate blood! Hurry to the Big Bleed stand! By earning valuable MAD points for participation, your residence/PSO could be elected as the 2016 MAD² winner. The Big Bleed Dracula’s await you.
Fun Run – Term 2MAD2 Fun Run is an annual 5/10km campus run. Fun Run attracts students, University staff, families, fitness fanatics and even the not so athletic across Stellenbosch (and abroad) to run for the community. The MAD2 Fun Run aims to promote awareness of healthy-living amongst students and is also an opportunity to raise money for MCS through profit made from the entry fees.
MAD Blowout – Term 3This is the final farewell concert to end off the term where some big names in the music industry will be entertaining the crowd and all the winners of MAD2 2016 will be announced.

In 2011 is ’n nuwe liggaam, genaamd MAL² (Maak Ander Lewens Makliker via Liefdadigheid) gevorm.
Deurlopende assessering
’n Student se werk in ’n module word sistematies by opeen-volgende geleenthede gedurende die semester of jaar geassesseer.
Kry ’n afskrif by www.sun.ac.za/university/jaarboek/indeks.htm of versoek een van ons Kliëntedienssentrum by tel 021 808 9111.

A student’s work in a particular module is systematically assessed on successive occasions throughout the semester or year. A final class mark (performance mark – see below) is awarded without the student having taken a formal university exam.
Early assessment
During their first weeks on campus already, first-year students complete early assessment in all their modules. This consists of tests or any other assessment that would give a fair indication of potential high-risk students in a particular module. Students, their lecturers and parents receive these marks at the end of week 6 in order to give them an early impression of students’ progress and possible need of assistance. Early assessment is one of the functions of the First-year Academy.
