Trail EssentialsWhen youre out on a long ride the last thing you want is to be caught without apuncture repair kit or some basic tools for those impromptu repairs. Make sureyou dont have your ride cut short by carrying a few essential tools. . .

A chain tool is a must have should your chainbreak. Choose either the world famous RivoliChain Rivet Extractor (06300) or the Rivex ChainRivet Extractor (06003).

It goes without saying that a good puncture repairkit is a must. The Cure-C-Cure Repair Kit (01003)contains feather-edged patches for quick, reliablerepairs that will last the life of the tube.

Once your tube is repaired, itll need inflating. TheJetvalve MK2 CO2Tyre Inflator (07008)is quickerthan using a traditional pump and much easier

Chain care

For a comfortable and safe ride, itsimportant that your bikes saddle ispositioned correctly.

Adjust the height of the saddle so that yourleg is slightly bent when the peddle is at itslowest point. Then move the saddlebackwards and forwards until your knee isover the pedal, with the cranks horizontal.

The bolt under the saddle that allows you toset the horizontal position also allows you toadjust the angle it should be nearly flat.

Remember if you cannot standcomfortably astride the bike, it is too

big for you.

Nearly all modern bikes are fitted withsocket head screws not bolts so youwill need a set of Cyclo Allen Keys toadjust the riding position and carry outother safety checks.

Mark and Steve Henshaw have literally worked their way up theladder in the cycle trade. They joined H&J Cash n Carry as vandrivers in the early 1980s and worked their way up throughmanagement until moving to M&J Cash n Carry in 2004. Theyjointly bought M&J the following year.

The company is a thriving wholesaler who as well as cash 'n carry deliver to independent cycle dealers. This of course includes theWeldtite range.

How long have you been buying Weldtite repair items?We have always bought Weldtite puncture repair kits. As new itemshave come along, we have added them to our range.

What are your main reasons for buying Weldtite?The main reason is that Weldtite cover the whole range of tyre repairproducts and puncture preventative materials. It means that we cando a 'one stop shop' and offer everything that our dealers require.

What changes to the range have you noticed over the years?The range has certainly expanded enormously now it not onlycovers puncture repair items, but also puncture preventative items

and inflation devices such as the Jetvalve gas pumps. We also stocklubricants, cleaners, valve accessories and Cyclo tools, plus the Adierange of stabilisers, baskets and bells all supplied by Weldtite.

How have the products improved over the years?For one thing, the packaging has improved a great deal and now ismore appealing. We like the fact that the repair range is colour co-ordinated (blue) and other ranges are different colours for examplethe lubricants are green. From a retail point of view, this stands out inthe Cash 'n Carry and of course also in the dealer's shops.

What are your best selling Weldtite repair items?On the puncture repair kits, our best seller is the 'Airtite' repair kit. Very

few dealers actually mend punctures these days and this kit sells wellto the youngsters who are the biggest users of puncture repair kits.

We also sell a lot of the Red Devil self seal patches. These tend to be soldto the more modern shops. In the old days, the traditional patches which are stuck to the tube with rubber solution were a great dealbetter than the self seal patches. This is no longer the case and WeldtitesRed Devil kits are every bit as effective as the traditional puncture repairkits. However, some of the older dealers take some convincing of this!

We sell a lot of puncture preventative products such as Dr Sludgesealant both in bottled and in pre-filled inner tubes and we have a

big following for Sureride tapes.How important is the Weldtite repair range to you?Theyre what we call 'bread and butter' items. We need them and theyregularly appear on our 'Specials' list to attract people to the cash 'ncarry. They are popular items we can guarantee to sell every day.

Inner tubes widths and pressures vary. Onhigh pressure inner tubes the narrow profilerepair kit would be more appropriate than an'Airtite' kit for example.

inner tubes are so readily available?

Inner tubes are getting expensive and ifpeople do carry a spare they only carry one.What happens if you get more than onepuncture? A puncture repair kit generallywill repair 6 punctures and is much cheaper.

Cycle Tyre SealThis is a very handy 'get you home' repair. Youjust squeeze the product into the valve and it re-inflates the tyre and mends it at the same time.However, it will only last for a short time and

you will need to replace the inner tube at home.Dr SludgeThis is generally put in before you have apuncture and sits in the inner tube and isforgotten. It works without you even beingaware that it is working.

The disadvantage is that quite a number of'Presta' valves do not have removeable coresand therefore cannot be used. In this case youneed to buy a ready filled Dr Sludge inner tube.In addition, they do add a small amount ofweight which might effect some racing bikes.

Sureride TapesThese give good protection but the tyres must

be kept fully inflated. Otherwise they will slipand can cause you punctures. Again, theracing fraternity might notice the weight.

What is your role in the team?Im the brains and money behind the MAD Team.I used to be official team mechanic for Dave Hemming(Junior World Champ) the Muddy Fox Race Team andthe Pro-Flex Race Team. I started MAD back in 1996and have never looked back!

Founded in 1931, Cliff Pratts have two cycle repair shops in Hull,England a city renowned for cycling. Proprietor Ian Bolton joinedthe business in 1981, and he took over the running of the companyseveral years ago.

How long have Cliff Pratts been using Cyclo tools?We have always used them. Personally I have used them since I

joined the business but they were in use long before that.

What basic tools would you recommend for the home user?Of course, amateur mechanics vary widely in their skills from theability to mend a puncture to the ability to re-make a wheel or bleedhydraulic brakes.

Most people however would require glass re-inforced nylon tyre levers,a deluxe multi-tool, a Rivoli rivet extractor, a crank extractor and aShimano bottom bracket remover. The more skilled will also need atorque wrench, ball ended allen keys and many more lines from theCyclo range. Fortunately, Cyclo cater for mechanics of all skill levels.

Which Weldtite and Cyclo products get used most frequently inyour workshop?On the Weldtite side we constantly use TF2 aerosol lubricant withTeflon, Citrus degreaser and grease with and without Teflon. On theCyclo side we use tools we have had here for many years, plus weare looking forward enormously to the introduction of the new range.

What in your opinion separates the new range of Cyclo workshoptools from the others on the market?These new Cyclo tools have obviously been designed bybicycle mechanics for bicycle mechanics. They have been made withease and speed of use in mind. For example, many of the tools havea quick release nut on them thus saving masses of unproductive time

in the workshop. They are very robust and look and feel fit forpurpose in a busy workshop. The handles have been ergonomicallydesigned to be comfortable to use but with the correct leverage toexert the right pressure to achieve the desired result.

Most bikes that we repair are well used and need heavy duty tools torepair them. Cyclo fit the bill. I also like the interchangeabilitybetween the tools, which is something Cyclo's competitors have notthought about. They are competitively priced and way cheaper thanthe current leading American competition.

I know you ride yourself, but maybe you could tell me what toolsyou personally carry with you on a ride?

Almost none! I am too well known around here and if I carry a lot oftools I will spend my ride fixing everyone else's bicycles, which I do forthe day job! However I do take a multi-tool, tyre levers and a puncturerepair kit with me. Oh, I should mention all of these are made byWeldtite and Cyclo!

Loose hub cones are a common cause of wheelrattles. You can easily check for loose cones bysimply holding the top of your wheel and trying tomove it from side to side. If the rim moves andthe hub axle doesn't, then its likely that the conesare loose. You can double check by taking the

wheel out and trying to wobble the axle - you'll beable to feel any looseness.
