Radian PWI - get some improvements Radian.PWI is the most popular application platform. The system address the issues that happen at the weld. In it’s current form, it operates as a weld fea-ture and weld process monitor. The principle technology is laser based imag-ing. We have take some steps to augment the system capabilities by adding options such as:

Thermal ImagingThermal imaging provides different information than what a laser scan does. In fact they compliment each other. The key difference is that for certain tube processes, thermal imaging is better predictor of weld faults than laser imag-ing. We have therfore opted to incorporate this technology into the Radian platform.

There are existing systems in the market, but they are expensive and unattainable by many companies who would like to have this information, but don’t have the budget for it.

We have put together a simple yet effective diameter system. We deploy 4 scan-ners around the tube, thereby creating two axes measurement. Each pair forms an axis. The scanners operate at 200Hz and provide data in the realm of 0.004”. We can deliver a solution with a single axis or double axis measurement. The double axis will give better prediction of out of roundness if the tube changes shape.

The system calculates D1(diameter 1) andD2 ( diameter 2). It also calculates the ratioD1/D2. Thefore if the ratio is >1, thenthe tube is out of round in the vertical axis.If the ratio is < 1, then the tube is out of roundin the horizontal axis.

These scanners can be rotated to form two axes in any orientation that is important tothe process.

The parameters are tied to a recipe manager with control limits. Outputs are sent to the PLC for the mill and data is stored in the SQL database for archiving and traceability.

What we have done is incorporate the 3D image into the

Radian.PWI so that the user will have the ability to choose

between the 3D view or the laser profile view. This

information updates in real-time.
