2 62ND EMMY® AWARDS | NATAS - NCCB

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to the Virtual 62nd Capital Emmy Awards!

As we gather to celebrate another year of excellence in Television Arts in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, I encourage you to sit back in your home or office and enjoy our virtual presentation of the incredible work from our Chapter’s members. Not only is our membership strong, but the work coming out of this chapter on a daily basis is of the highest quality. This year we received nearly 1,200 entries in 127 different categories.

In other years, we would all be together at this moment, toasting our friends and colleagues, but that’s not possible right now. You have all worked tirelessly to keep the public safe and informed during the COVID-19 pandemic. You have done your jobs in ways you likely never expected. You have found new ways to tell stories and produce shows that I know will be strongly reflected in next year’s awards ceremony. And against the backdrop of a pandemic, you have also risen to the awesome responsibility of covering a social revolution. Across our communities, people on the margins have stood up, in many cases have marched and demonstrated, to demand justice and equal treatment. As an organization, we stand ready to shine a light on issues that have lived too long in the shadows. Your coverage of these events will be the recorded history and tools of progress for future generations.

So tonight, with heartfelt gratitude, I’d like to raise a glass to each of you who have truly made a difference in your communities, newsrooms, and organizations.

I am also happy to report some good news. The Capital Emmy Chapter is stronger than ever. This year, we continue to be the fastest-growing, and second-largest, chapter in The National Academy. We have more members than the Texas, Northern California and even New York chapters. This is a credit to the hard work of the Board of Governors, the Chapter’s Executive Committee, and the Chapter’s staff. I can’t thank them enough for their dedication. This growth is also a credit to each of you, for being ambassadors of this organization through your membership and participation.

I also want to recognize two stations who have made a unique commitment to our chapter. Maryland Public Television and WTVR in Richmond are our Capital Emmy Partners. This commitment is a significant investment in our Academy and provides membership status to all their employees. We greatly appreciate their support and encourage other stations to become Capital Emmy Partners as well!

Tonight, we also honor two others for their contributions to our profession.

Joe Beninati is this year’s recipient of the Board of Governors Award. He has become a leading advocate and representative for the Capitals and NBC Sports Washington in the community, helping build the sport of hockey and giving back to those in need through his support of countless causes and events. Not only has Joe been a long-time supporter of the Chapter and The Academy, but more importantly he has consistently set a standard for excellence in our profession.

Jesse Vaughan is the Director of Virginia State University’s Division of Advanced Creative Services Group. He directed The Last Punch, a film about Muhammad Ali, and has earned more than 30 Emmy Awards. He accomplished this after great tragedy in his life and while caring for his aging mother, who was diagnosed with dementia and for whom he serves as a caregiver. Jesse also supports the local arts community, lends his talent to non-profits, and mentors young filmmakers and enthusiasts. We have always referred to this recognition as our “Profile in Courage.” Jesse fits that definition perfectly.

Congratulations to all of tonight’s nominees and Emmy Award recipients!

The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognizes outstanding individual achievement in the National Capital Chesapeake Bay region by conferring annual awards of merit. The Emmy® Award is intended to recognize excellence. Therefore, in each category, one award, more than one award or no award may be given. The Awards Committee wants to remind NCCB members of the importance and honor of the nomination itself. This year news, program and individual craft entries were judged online and in person by panels in Heartland, Lone Star, New York, Ohio Valley, Pacific Southwest, Rocky Mountain Southwest and Suncoast. The National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter’s Awards Committee reviewed the unidentified totals prepared by the Certified Public Accounting firm of Bowling, Franklin and Co., LLP for the purpose of determining the number of awards to be given.

THE EMMY® AWARDS HOW THE EMMY® JUDGING PROCESS WORKS

The Emmy® Award celebrates excellence in television with the announcement of the nominations in May and the awarding of statuettes in June. In December and January, our Chapter receives hundreds of entries in 127 categories. After a thorough review by the awards committee members, the entries are divided up among other NATAS Chapters. They are screened and judged online, or in-person at Super Panels, by seasoned TV station staff, production companies, and independents who are experienced in the categories they have agreed to judge. This year, seven Chapters judged our entries and in turn, we will judge their entries throughout the year.

Programming and News categories have a high score of 30; Crafts have a high score of 20. When the scores come in, the accounting firm of Bowling, Franklin and Co., LLP translates the scores into percentages. So when it comes time for the Awards Committee to evaluate whether a category has Emmy® recipients and nominees, they get a blind category with a long list of percentages. After several years of doing it this way, the National Awards Committee has devised certain cut offs for scores that determine whether a category has winners and nominees. As a general guideline, entries that score 90% or above are awarded an Emmy® and those that score 80% or above receive a Nomination.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS AWARD

This award reaches beyond those usually awarded for television news and Production. The Board of Governors Award recognizes achievements by individuals, organizations or companies in community service or other worthwhile endeavors within the National Capital Chesapeake Bay’s region. Historically, the Board of Governors Award is given for truly outstanding achievement and unique accomplishment of some duration and durability.

JOE BENINATI Play-by-play Announcer, NBC Sports Washington Award Recipient

Joe Beninati has become synonymous with the Washington Capitals during his 25-year tenure as the team’s play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports Washington. Though Beninati’s emphatic goal calls are the most memorable part of his repertoire, his ability to illustrate every moment of the game in an entertaining and insightful fashion is what has made him a favorite amongst the Rock-the-Red faithful and his peers, which has earned him 14 NATAS-NCCB Emmy Awards.

Along with his partner Craig Laughlin, Beninati experienced the apex of his quarter-century of service calling hockey in the nation’s capital during the 2017-18 season as the Caps claimed their first Stanley Cup Championship. From calling preseason games to emceeing the championship celebration on the National Mall, he helped narrate one of the most magical seasons in D.C. sports history.

Joe also makes an impact well outside of his role as an announcer. He has become a leading advocate and representative for the Capitals and NBC Sports Washington in the community, helping build the sport of hockey and giving back to those in need through his support of countless causes and events. Joe is also a selfless colleague and mentor to many, helping guide rising professionals through the ranks and providing advice to those looking to break into the field.

TED YATES AWARD

Ted Yates was an NBC News producer who traveled the world on assignment. Killed in the practice of his profession, he is remembered for his achievements in journalism. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding professional and personal qualities in their contribution to the National Capital Chesapeake Bay region’s television news and public affairs.

JESSE VAUGHANDirector of the Division of Advanced Creative Services Group, Virginia State UniversityAward Recipient

While Jesse Vaughan is known for his numerous accomplishments, including being the director of In Living Color and Juwana Man, few know about his journey of personal tragedy and sacrifice. When he was fourteen, his father was violently murdered over a card game. Years later, his fiancé would be murdered in a mugging gone wrong. In between those pillars of painful tragedy, Vaughan would continue to direct produce or write memorable works such as The Jesse Jackson Show, VH1 to One Inside Music Show, and the 1992 Coca-Cola music video project for the Barcelona Olympics.

Raised in Richmond, he lived in Los Angeles, CA and Flagstaff, AZ until his aging mother asked him to return home. Turning his back on his LA career, he returned to Virginia. Typically, a move like this would cripple one’s career, Vaughan found a way to make it work for his family’s sake. He became the Director of Virginia State University’s Division of Advanced Creative Services Group, directed “The Last Punch,” a Muhammad Ali Film, and earned more than 30 Emmys. He accomplished this while caring for his aging mother, who was diagnosed with dementia and for whom he serves as a caregiver. Vaughan also supports the local arts community, lends his talent to non-profits, and mentor’s young filmmakers and enthusiasts.
