This is the day... Commentary from a common Terry

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. I’m tempted to write this little article to encourage you to make Psalm 118:24 your daily mantra. At some point, while going through your morning routine, you raise your eyes toward the heavens...or you bow your head in submission...or you stare at your own face in the mirror, ready to take on the day...and say, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad it!” Not a bad way to start the day. It is the day of God’s design. It’s the time He has gifted you in this moment. To live this day honoring it because God “made” this day—how can we go wrong? But that simplifies the phrase too much. Psalms 113-118 is called the Hallel, Hebrew for “praise.” It was read/sung during the Passover com-memoration as well as at other major times of national worship and festivals. In Ezra 3, after the people laid the foundation of the temple after their return from exile, they chant the first and last line of Psalm 118—Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever! It is very likely that Jesus and his apostles concluded their Passover meal in the upper room with this song. Matthew 26:30 tells us they sang. This is the day that the Lord has made is not only a healthy perspective on the day ahead. It is a recognition of God’s deliverance and protection of His children. This is the worship text to celebrate their return from exile and the beginning of construction of a new temple. This is the text, among a block of songs, that reminds the Jew that God delivered the nation from Egyp-tian slavery centuries earlier. It is a celebration that we not only believe, but have experienced God’s steadfast love in our lives already. He has deliv-

ered in the past; there’s no reason for me to believe He will not deliver again. He is our refuge. He fights our battles. He helps me when I am falling because of the assault inflicted on me by my enemies. God has placed a cornerstone that can’t be shaken. With all that in mind, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Quite a song. Positioned uniquely between the shortest chapter in the Bible (117) and the longest chapter in the Bible (119), surely it has not been overlooked by the non-Jew! It is a wonderful hymn of praise, an exclamation point at the end of a series of praise hymns. Our day is great not only for what God may give us, but THE day of our deliverance is great and we rejoice in it. Hear the words of Martin Luther concerning Psalm 118.

This is my Psalm, my chosen Psalm. I love them all; I love all holy Scripture, which is my consolation and my life. But this Psalm is nearest my heart, and I have a peculiar right to call it mine. It has saved me from many a pressing danger, from which neither emperor, nor kings, nor sages, nor saints, could have saved me. It is my friend; dearer to me than all the honours and power of the earth... But it may be objected, that this Psalm is common to all; no one has a right to call it his own. Yes; but Christ is also common to all, and yet Christ is mine. I am not jealous of my property; I would divide it with the whole world... And would to God that all men would claim the Psalm as especially theirs! It would be the most touching quarrel, the most agreeable to God -- a quarrel of union and perfect charity.

Love one another,

Westview India School of Preaching

We need your feedback. The 2-year training program overseen by Brother V in India is graduating

its first class next month. We are considering another 2-year commitment for a new class that would

begin in March. This is a commitment of approximately $20,000. If you are interested in helping

support this through monthly support or a one-time commitment, we need to know soon. Pledge

cards are on the table at the back of the auditorium. You can also check with Barry, Vern, or Terry

if you need more information or have specific questions. (The first graduating class pics are on the

board at the back of the auditorium.)
