Holy Angels Festival—Saturday, September 29, 2012 Raffle tickets are available to be picked up in the courtyard on Saturday, August 4 after the 4:30 p.m. Mass and on Sunday, August 5 after all the Masses. Thanking you in advance for your

cooperation in helping us save on mailing costs of $800.00.

ONE LORD, ONE FAITH Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospels were aware of today’s first reading from the second book of Kings? Of

course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all. Copyright © J. S. Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - July 29, 2012 The eyes of all look hopefully to you,

and you give them their food in due season. — Psalm 145:15

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said (2 Kings 4:42-44). Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-6). Gospel — Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted (John 6:1-15). ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Dear Brothers and Sisters, heartfelt thanks to those of you who are able to support us in the second collections this weekend. During the past two weeks we delivered Child Spree gift cards for back-to-school clothes and supplies to 18 chil-dren. There were many grateful thank yous from them and their parents. It is humbling to see the struggle that par-ents are faced with just to get the basics needed to send their children to school. As a parish we can be grateful that we can help make life a little easier for them. Jesus sends us out on our home visits. We never know what hidden need we will discover but He does! While delivering a Child Spree gift card, we discovered that a 9 month old younger sister had outgrown her bassinette. We had a lovely crib we had gotten 6 months ago at a garage sale stored in a member’s garage. It was just what was needed, and we delivered it the next day. The parents were so happy and relieved because they did not have the money to buy this item. “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The feeding of the five thousand (and more) by the seaside is certainly the most famous of picnics. The miracle of the loaves reminds us of the earlier miracle of the wine at Cana. Like the

Cana miracle, this one begins with human initiative as the small child responds to the hunger of the crowd by offering a seemingly meager gift. What could be more appropriate for deep summer than a Gospel account of a joyful picnic with Jesus and the generosity of a child at the center? The coming month of August has always been a time for delight in the bounty of the earth, for picnics by the sea, dinner under the stars, for porch and rooftop, for parks and beaches, and enjoying the best of local crops. August’s festivals of Transfiguration and Assumption have long given Christians the best of excuses for feasting on the abundance of summer: corn, tomatoes, pesto, bowls of fresh fruit. Picnics are a sign of the welcome table of God: always room for one more, always plenty to share, always a place of laughter and story-telling and always speaking to us of our deepest longings. Don’t let August pass by without a picnic! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY ANGELS CHURCH JUBILEE CORNER One of the main events of our 50th Jubilee Celebration is a dinner on Thursday, September 27, 2012. This is a catered Buffet

Dinner with a menu featuring: London Broil, Chicken Piccata, Pasta, Salad, Dessert & a Beverage. Many of you have purchased your tickets already. We would like as many as possible to be a part of this memorable and historic Golden Jubilee celebration. The cost of the dinner is $50.00 and NO tickets will be sold at the door. You may call the rectory at 650-755-0478 to reserve your ticket. All proceeds for this event will go towards the long overdue repairs and maintenance of the Holy Angels Convent. This is a way in which we can give back to the Dominican Sisters and their dedication to a life of service.

CATHEDRAL ORGAN CONCERT: Awake My Soul August 7, 2012 at 7 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Gough Street and Geary Boulevard, San Francisco, featuring Marina Omelchenko, one of Russia’s “few professional church organists.” Under communism virtually all churches in Russia

were closed but that has eased since 1991, organizers said, thus allowing artists like Omelchenko to flourish. Proceeds benefit the Mary Mother of God Mission Society founded to help reestablish the Roman Catholic Church in Russia. Admission is free but free will donations are welcome. The concert is part of a U.S. tour with stops in Denver, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Modesto where the national office of the sponsoring group is located. Franciscan Father Benedict Groeschel and Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio are members of the mission society’s board. Call (209) 408-0728 or visit www.vladmission.org.

“SENIORS” Come join the “Golden Years Seniors”. We meet every Thursday in the Parish Hall at 10 am, starting with coffee, tea and treats. Our activities

include a short meeting, raffles, bingo poker games and we celebrate holidays with dessert or luncheons. Each month we charter a fun bus trip. So get a friend, or just come yourself. For more information call Rose Huffman at 650.756.7312. Hope to see you soon!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO VOLUNTEER AND SERVE AS A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER? We could really use your help. Come to the training on Thursday, August 9 at 7:00 pm at the parish hall. Please call Deacon Lerny, 650.758.3480, or Norene Thurman at 650.992.9255 for more information.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
