WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

WHO DO I NEED TO TALK TO AT PARENTS’ EVENING?

EACH OF YOUR CHILD’S SUBJECT TEACHERS

If your child has more than one teacher for the same subject, please try to see

all of them so that you get a complete picture of their progress in all lessons.

YOUR CHILD’S FORM TUTOR

The form tutor has an overview of your child’s welfare and progress across all

subjects as well as knowing your child’s target grades. Please make sure you

speak with them.

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

WE EXPECT THAT ALL

STUDENTS ATTEND SCHOOL AT

LEAST 95% OF THE TIME. FULL

ATTENDANCE IS ESSENTIAL IN

THE FINAL FEW TERMS AT

SCHOOL.

IF YOUR CHILD’S ATTENDANCE

HAS FALLEN BELOW 90%

PLEASE TALK TO THEIR FORM

TUTOR ABOUT WAYS TO

SUPPORT THEM IN IMPROVING

THEIR ATTENDANCE.

HOW SHOULD MY CHILD REVISE FOR

EXAMS?

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

Leaving revision until just before the exams is not an

efficient way of revising. By the time you “revise” you will

have forgotten a lot of what you learned and will actually

be learning it all again from scratch.

A more effective way to prepare for exams is to keep the

knowledge “current” by never allowing the brain to forget it!

Successful students review their learning on a regular

basis:

WHAT DID I LEARN TODAY?

WHAT DID I LEARN THIS WEEK?

WHAT DID I LEARN THIS MONTH?

WHAT DID I LEARN THIS TERM?

Page 5: Welcome to Year 12 · Mock Exams Week 1 - Monday 22nd February - Friday 26th February Period Monday 22nd Feb Tuesday 23rd Feb Wednesday 24th Feb Thursday 25th Feb Friday 26th Feb

IS YOUR CHILD USING THE HOMEWORK DIARY TO HELP THEM ORGANISE THEIR LEARNING?

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU SUPPORT THEM BY READING CHECKING AND SIGNING THE DIARY EVERY WEEK.

HOW SHOULD MY CHILD REVISE FOR

EXAMS?

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

Passive learning is not the most effective way to

remember what you have learnt.

Simply reading over your notes over and over again

will not help you to memorise the information.

When your child is revising, encourage them to take a

more active approach:

•Make notes on what they have read

•Write a summary of each page or chapter

•Create a mindmap of the key facts of each topic

•Have an exam question in mind during a revision

session – find all the facts needed for that question

Page 7: Welcome to Year 12 · Mock Exams Week 1 - Monday 22nd February - Friday 26th February Period Monday 22nd Feb Tuesday 23rd Feb Wednesday 24th Feb Thursday 25th Feb Friday 26th Feb

DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR CHILD’S IMPORTANT DEADLINES ARE?

You can support your child if you know their deadlines and remind them when an important deadline or exam is coming up.

Ask your child’s subject teachers for a list of important dates on their courses.

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

YOU WILL FIND A COPY OF YOUR CHILD’S

EXAM TIMETABLE IN YOUR ENVELOPE.

HOW SHOULD MY CHILD REVISE FOR

EXAMS?

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

Help your child to CONSOLIDATE and APPLY what

they have learnt and PREPARE for exams by

encouraging them to:

•Write detailed essay plans based on exam questions.

Give them a list of questions and allow them 5 minutes

to write the PLAN for each answer (JUST the plan)

•Write a detailed answer to an essay question. Time

how long it takes to answer the question .

•Practise writing this answer more than once to see if

they can develop speed

•See how much of an answer they can write in timed

conditions

IS MY CHILD GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?

Most teenagers want to stay up late.

However, if they do not get enough sleep at night they will be tired in lessons and will not learn effectively. You can support them to be better learners by making sure they get at least 8 hours sleep every night.

TELL YOUR CHILD THAT YOU ARE TAKING THE MOBILE OUT OF THEIR BEDROOM SO THAT THEY GET A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP. THEY CAN COLLECT IT IN THE MORNING.

Never allow your child to pull an “all-nighter” revision session the day before an exam. They will be tired in the exam and will forget most of what they learnt.

EVENING

HOW SHOULD MY CHILD REVISE FOR

EXAMS?

WELCOME TO YEAR 12 PARENTS’

EVENING

Revising for long periods without a break does not

work. After about an hour, the brain will stop taking in

new information.

Suggest that they revise for 45 minutes, then spend 5

minutes writing a summary of what they have

achieved.

THEN TAKE A TEN MINUTE BREAK BEFORE

REPEATING THIS PROCESS.

Three sessions like this, including breaks, will allow them

to remember more than if they tried to revise for 3 hours

non-stop!

HOMEWORK

AS Level students should be

spending an average of five hours per week on homework and private study for every subject.

BTEC students should be spending about 15 hours a week on homework and private study. This should include time spent reviewing what they have learnt and wider reading around their subject.

EVENING

IT’S GOOD TO TALK

You can support your child by

making talking about their

learning a regular part of family

life.

Even if you don’t understand the

subjects they are studying, try to

talk about what they have learnt

and how well their studies are

going.

As a school, we encourage all students to seriously consider applying to higher

education. All students must write a UCAS statement and investigate what courses

are available to them with their predicted grades.

However, we understand that some students, having explored the courses open to

them, genuinely do not want to go to university. If you now find yourself in this

situation, it is important that you let us know so that we can support you in seeking

the next stage in your education, training or employment.

Please let your form tutor know if you are not going to apply to university so that

appropriate information, advice and guidance can be given. You may also want to

check out the website www.notgoingtouni.co.uk

Repay after you have left your course and are earning over £21,000.

Like a “Graduate Tax” rather than a loan as taken straight from your

wages. More about repayment later.
