History of Froyle

Froli, as it was then known, is mentioned in the Domesday Book, but there isevidence of earlier settlements in thearea. Stone Age and Bronze Age toolshave been discovered in Lower Froyle.The remains of a Roman villa have beenfound at Coldrey, at the edge of theparish, and Norman pottery has beenfound at Baldwin in Hussey’s Lane.

Indeed, the entry in the Domesday Booknotes that Froli ‘was ever there’. It isbelieved that widespread usage of thename Froyle dates to the early part of the14th century. The Domesday Book (1086)records the Manor of Froyle being ownedby Edward the Confessor and later on, by William the Conqueror.

In the 14th century the estatebelonged to the Abbey of St Mary inWinchester and this gave rise to ourchurch being dedicated to theAssumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1541 the estate was acquired fromHenry VIII by the Jephson family ondissolution of the monasteries. Therewere various owners over the next twocenturies, until in 1770 the Manor ofFroyle was purchased by Sir ThomasMiller.

To a large extent the Miller family laidthe foundation for the form and layoutof Upper Froyle as it is today.

Upper Froyle

Sir Thomas’ son, Sir Thomas Combe Millerwas responsible for rebuilding the nave ofthe church in 1812 and his grandson, SirCharles Hayes Miller, founded FroyleSchool in 1868.

At the turn of the last century, UpperFroyle was home to Sir Hubert Miller, whospent much time in Italy. He broughtback many beautiful church vestments,as well as a number of statues of saints.

The statues, which are a key feature ofUpper Froyle, were positioned on theouter walls of many of the houses, givingrise to its other name, ‘The Village of theSaints’. (A leaflet showing the positioningand names of the statues can be foundin the church).

In Lower Froyle, the Anchor Inn datesback to the 13th century and it is likely that it has been an ale house for much of this time.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, LowerFroyle gradually evolved into a farmingsettlement, serving several large farmsincluding Brocas, Silvesters, Husseys andHodges.

The site is divided into two areas; TheFroyle Archive,which features the historyof the village and people of Froyle, whileFroyle Todaydeals with news, events andcommunity information about the villagein the 21st century.

The Froyle Archive holds a vast array ofrecords, the majority of which are online(over 2000 pages and 4000 photographs& maps), including church records,censuses, wills, inventories, histories, tellingthe story of the village from beforeDomesday.

Froyle Today has a calendar of villageevents, local weather, details of churchservices, the village magazine, includinga searchable archive of the past 13years.

A Froyle Parish Plan was prepared in 2013 that summarises the results of avillage wide survey of what residentsmost appreciated about life in Froyleand what they would like to see in thefuture. Village Design StatementAt the same time as starting on theParish Plan, work started on a VillageDesign Statement. This is a planningdocument and looks at thebackground to how futuredevelopment should be consideredfrom a planning and designperspective. The VDS is hopefully to beadopted by EHDC as part of planningguidance.

A village magazine is published eachmonth and delivered free of charge to all households. This is a great source ofinformation about all that is going on inthe village.


Froyle ParkFroyle Park is a new venue with selfcatering apartments and facilitiesavailable for hire.

PubsThere are two pubs in Froyle situated ateither end of the village. The ‘Hen andChicken’ is in Upper Froyle and clearlyvisible from the A31. The ‘Anchor’ is inLower Froyle as you enter the village fromBentley. Both pubs serve food atlunchtimes and evenings and have agood range of local ales.

St Mary’s Church

Froyle’s ancient grade 1 listed church ‘TheChurch of the Assumption of the BlessedVirgin Mary’ is in Upper Froyle. It is part of aBenefice with Bentley and Binsted, withone vicar, Yann Dubreuil.

Yann encourages each parish to play toits strengths. Froyle has a strong ‘highchurch’ history. The church seeks to retainthe more interesting parts of this legacyincluding strong choral, traditionalservices.

We also have a unique collection of 17thand 18th century church robes, altarfrontals and associated items. Displaycases and regular exhibitions allow thesetreasures to be appreciated by a wideaudience.

The church community also has anenthusiastic team of bellringers, a choir, a textile conservation team, groups offlower arrangers and cleaners. (Noparticular qualifications are needed forjoining in with any of these).

Looking forward the church aims tocombine its sense of tradition with aninformal accessibility and sense of fun in its worship in order to be relevant to as many people as possible. The annual open air Pet Service on therecreation ground and the monthlyslightly noisy and chaotic Sunday school are examples of this approach.

Special church services are held atEaster, Christmas, Harvest Festival andRemembrance Sunday. These andother church related events such as the Harvest Supper, music evenings and a programme of Lent lunches, are also enjoyed by residents who are not regular worshippers.

BellringingBellringers meet on Friday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm to practice. We ring for 30 to 45 minutes before mostchurch services and weddings.Contact Linda Bulpitt 22725.

Church ChoirFroyle Choir is a friendly group of singerswho rehearse every Thursday at 7.30pmfor one hour. We sing music ranging fromthe 16th century to today. We sing at twomain services a month (the 11am andEvensong) with one Evensong every othermonth being Fully Choral. We culminateour year with a Fully Choral Adventservice. We also support weddings andfunerals as requested, and have close linkswith St Lawrence in Alton. Church VestmentsThe Vestments group meets everyWednesday morning from 10am to 12pmin the church to look after St Mary’s veryfine collection of rare vestments. Thegroup undertakes housekeeping andminor repairs. Items are sent away toprofessional conservators when theirconservation is warranted and money isavailable. Clubs and Activities

Froyle Gardening Club is a friendly villageinstitution taking in members from far andwide. We meet on the second Friday ofmost months for speakers on variedsubjects and carry out garden visits in thesummer. We hold three shows, one ofwhich is combined with the Village Fête. A £5 membership will entitle you to a 10%discount at Springfield Nursery. We alsooffer flower arranging workshops andpractical gardening demonstrations. Better BalanceThis is a fun activity for people who want to keep active and improve their flexibilityand mobility through gentle exercises tomusic. It is also a social activity as we finishwith a well-earned cup of tea or coffeeand biscuits. Baby and Toddler MorningsThe group is open to all babies, toddlersand pre-school children and aims toprovide an opportunity for the children toplay and socialise while their parent /carer enjoys a chat and cup of coffee ortea. There is a charge of £2 per family, perweek which covers refreshments, craftactivities and the rent of the village hall.Come and join us!

Bentley, Binsted and FroyleCARE GroupA team of volunteers provides transport to medical appointments. A smalldonation is requested to help cover fueland administration costs. To arrange a lifttelephone 23440, if possible a week or soin advance, and your call will go throughto the duty co-ordinator who will takedetails and find a driver. Good Neighbour SchemeThe Froyle Good Neighbours Schemeprovides support for residents of Froyle.Simply phone a number and get help with any small emergencies that may arise. These can include basicrepairs/DIY, help with shopping andgardening, snow clearance and short-term support with pets. The help isprovided by our band of volunteers whoshould be able to solve most problems.When it is not possible for us to do this,because the problem involves approvedtrades such as plumbing and electricians,we will put you in touch with local tradespeople who can provide their services.The scheme is meant to provide short-term assistance for those residents thatcannot help themselves. Neighbourhood WatchA Neighbourhood Watch schemeoperates in the village. About a dozenvolunteers keep watch on theirimmediate vicinity. If you are interestedplease call John Thursfield 23294.

Winchester RefectoryWe help out three times a year, servingcoffee and tea, taking out food andclearing tables. We help the Cathedralfulfil its Benedictine mission of beingwelcoming while also contributing to therunning costs of this historic building. Apool of volunteers covers shifts during theday. Harvest SupperHarvest Supper is normally held the Fridaybefore the Harvest Festival service at StMary’s. All Froyle Village members arewelcome and tickets are sold in advancefor this highly popular event. Delightfulhome cooked food for a variety of tastes,fine wines and good company areguaranteed.

Film NightFroyle Film Night is held on a quarterly basisin the Village Hall. Recently released filmsare shown on a wide angle screen withthe accompaniment of wine and nibbles.Tickets are £8-10 each and the audienceis limited to approximately 70, so it’s ‘firstcome, first served’! Forthcoming viewingsare advertised in the village magazine.

Jumble SaleThis event is held on a Saturday, in May, at2pm in the Village Hall. Notices forcollection of jumble appear in the Marchissue of the village magazine and help isalways welcomed. All proceeds go to StMary’s Church.

Quiz NightA highlight of the autumn, this team eventhas been established for almost ten yearswith the winning team often organisingthe next year’s event in aid of their chosencharity. It is held in the Village Hall, with theteams answering almost impossiblequestions to compete for the covetedprize of...just winning.

Lent LunchesLent Lunches have been ongoing since1991 and we are sure there are somepeople who have been to all of them!Forthcoming lunches are posted in thevillage magazine.They are simple lunches of soup, breadand cheese in aid of a charity chosen bythe hostess (or host). The lunches are heldfrom 12.30pm to 2pm and we ask gueststo give a £2 donation (although you cangive more!). Open GardensFroyle Gardens open annually, usually inearly June for the National GardensScheme. Gardeners are very fortunatethat this event is enthusiastically supportedby the village, cakes are generouslydonated and teas provided in the VillageHall. There is a nominal fee for combinedentry to the gardens and plants are onsale too. The 17th and 18th centuryvestments are also on display in St Mary’sChurch.

This is normally held on the last Saturday inNovember in the Village Hall starting at2pm. It has stalls selling gifts, bric-a-brac,china, jewellery, locally produced food forChristmas, refreshments and a raffle. Thehighlight is the Father Christmas Grotto, thebest for miles around and perfect forchildren of all ages. The ultimate VillageChristmas Event!

Village FêteA village fête is held each year on thesecond Saturday of July and volunteersare always needed to serve on theorganising committee or to man stalls,beer tents etc, set up or break down.Contact Mary or William Knowles 23164.

Parish Council

The committee organises village eventsincluding bonfire night, film night andother events. They maintain the VillageHall and facilitate hiring.The committee meets monthly on thesecond Wednesday of every month atthe Village Hall.Email [email protected]

Parochial Church CouncilMembers of the PCC are elected bythose on the church electoral roll. ThePCC co-operates with the vicar topromote all the aims of the church andcare for people in their needs whetherpastoral, evangelistic or social. The PCC is responsible for themaintenance of the fabric of the church building.
