From The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends in Christ,

(Part 3: This is a continuation of last week’s bulletin article.)

Part of the key work of any parish is the handing on of the faith to our future generations and the teaching of the faith to all generations. Saint Alphonsus Parish can be very proud to have a strong Catholic School and Christian Formation Program. I have very much enjoyed getting to know the families of our parish. In many cases, the parents of our parish are real examples to their children and inspirations to me. It is not easy to live the faith today and harder still to raise children in it. So many parents here make great efforts and real sacrifices to do that.

We know that parents have the first responsibility to hand on the faith, but they do not work alone. We are blessed with a great school faculty and staff, a wonderful religious education program and volunteer catechists, as well as a very strong RCIA program. This is important work, and it is vital that we keep working at it and keep improving with every passing year. As a priest, I count it a great blessing to be a part of First Communions and Confirmations. There were too many to count at our parish, but each one was a privilege.

Of course, we learn the Faith in order to practice it. Faith flourishes in action. Our parish has a strong tradition of reaching out in service to our brothers and sisters in need. The parishioners here do not just talk about helping others, they get involved and make a positive impact. One of the most beautiful teachings of the Church is the teaching on the dignity of the human person (especially needed in our world today). The parish lives this teaching out in practical service through pro-life efforts and concrete acts of charity to our neighbors. The hundreds of parishioners who lend their hands to make life better for others, often at great personal cost, is a source of inspiration for me. May the Lord continue to bless your good works!

(This reflection will continue in next week’s bulletin.)

Sincerely yours in Christ,

- Fr. Aaron Esch

As I Leave My “Active” Ministry The weekend of July 25/26, I will deacon and preach at all the Masses as the last weekend of my active ministry here at St. Al’s. As I am not able to meet with many of you because of the confines we find ourselves in, I will put some of my thoughts here today.

What a privilege it has been for me to have been your deacon here for 36 years. As we know, Church is not a building, but its people, and you have been an incredible part of my life, my growth in my faith life AND my joy! I also want to say how much I have appreciat-ed how wonderfully you have treated my wife Kathy throughout all these years.

The greatest joy of my ministry here has been to have been able to baptize the little ones in our community. Fortunately, I will still be able to do so. I am humbled at having been able to share your faith journeys—your joys, your sorrows—to work with parents in bringing their children to their first sacrament—to be with families as they process their grief and to walk with them to determine where is God in all this! In working as facilitators in the Marriage Preparation program, Kathy and I have enjoyed working with couples as they prepare for the sacrament of marriage. As Kathy and I shared our 53 years of marriage with them, it truly brought us closer in our own marriage.

I also look back at the time that Fr. Straub and I started the RCIA program here at St Al’s. The training that we went through in Washington, D.C., was life changing for me. The RCIA program has continued on so very well over these many years.

In closing, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the wonderful support of the FIVE pastors that I had the privilege to serve with. They were ALL very supportive of my ministry. You as a parish need to know that this kind of support is not necessarily experienced by other deacons in the dio-cese.

So now, my active ministry ends. I will still be working with our Men for Christ group as well as to be available for baptisms, witnessing marriages and funerals. Blessings to all, -Deacon Ted

Question Of The Week Theme: Discipleship—opening our hearts to Jesus’ word and acting upon it. Question for Youth: When the sower, in this week’s Gospel, sowed his seed, not all of it fell on “good soil.” What can you do in the coming week to make sure that you are open to God in your life? What is getting in the way of your being “good soil?” Question for Adults: Using the parable of Jesus in this reading, describe how faith has been planted in your life? How long did it take for that seed to land “on good soil?”
