s AFFIRMATION OF FAITh The Nicene CreedWe believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceedeth from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERING ANThEMListen, Sweet Dove Grayston IvesListen, sweet Dove, unto my song, and spread Thy golden wings in me; hatching my tender heart so long, till it get wing, and flie away with Thee. Such glorious gifts Thou didst bestow, that th’ earth did like a heav’n appeare; the starres were coming down to know if they might mend their wages, and serve here. The sunne, which once did shine alone, hung down his head and wisht for night, when he beheld twelve sunnes for one going about the world and giving light. Lord, though we change, Thou art the same, the same sweet God of love and light; restore this day, for Thy great name, unto His ancient and miraculous right.

Where Shepherds Lately Knelt Carl Schalk

Where shepherds lately knelt and kept the angel’s word, I come in half-belief, a pilgrim strangely stirred; but there is room and welcome there for me; but there is room and welcome there for me. In that unlikely place I find Him as they said: Sweet newborn Babe, how frail! And in a manger bed: A still, small voice to cry one day for me; a still, small voice to cry one day for me. How should I not have known Isaiah would be there, His prophecies fulfilled? With pounding heart I stare: A Child, a Son, the Prince of Peace for me; a child, a son, the Prince of Peace for me. Can I, will I forget how Love was born, and burned Its way into my heart—unasked, unforced, unearned, to die, to live, and not alone for me; to die, to live, and not alone for me? About this Morning’s Music

The text of the opening hymn was written by the poet Frances Wile at the request of her minister to “write a hymn about the spiritual values of winter.” The tune, Forest Green, was originally an English folk melody. In 1906, it was wed with the text of “O Little Town of Bethlehem” for publication in the English Hymnal. The middle hymn was written by Shadyside Presbyterian Church’s pastor, Hugh Thomson Kerr, for the church’s fiftieth anniversary. The closing hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 72. The tune first appeared in 1793 with a setting of Psalm 19. The composer lived on Duke Street in the English town of St. Helen’s.

New “Women at the Well” Bible study – Women of all ages are welcome to gather twice monthly with the “Women at the Well” for in-depth Bible study, discussion, fellowship, and snacks. Friendships and connections grow deeper when we share the Scriptures in study and prayer. For our first study of 2018, we will read author Andy Stanley’s Follow. Join us beginning Thursday, January 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Craig Room, as together we seek to quench the thirsting of our souls. If you need more information, please contact Lauren Sharps through the church office.

young Adult Bible study – Young adults and friends of Shadyside Presbyterian Church are invited to participate in a Bible study focusing on the Book of Acts. For more information, please contact Rev. John Magnuson.

Our next gathering occurs on Sunday, January 14.

sunday Adventures in Music (sAM) is a comprehensive music training program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
