In today’s Gospel we hear about the man who approaches
Jesus to ask Him about eternal life. Jesus responds and says,
“You know the commandments.” If the man knew the
commandments and he was living them then there must have
been something about Jesus that drew the young man to
Him. This is an eternal truth – there is something about Jesus
that draws each one of us to Him. In the words of Pope St.
John Paul II, “People today need to turn to Christ once again
in order to receive from him the answer to their questions
about what is good and what is evil. Christ is the Teacher,
the Risen One who has life in himself and who is always
present in his Church and in the world.” As we continue our
own journey toward discipleship we have to start by turning
to the best teacher available. Jesus calls each of us to go
beyond our own preconceived notions of our self-
justification. In the Gospel, before the answer St. Mark says,
“Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him …” When
we draw closer to Jesus, even when we are challenged, it is
out of His love for us that he calls us to be better. We can
always rely on God’s love to guide us through the
challenging times.
