Halls High grads intern with senator

Two Halls High graduates are summer interns for Tennessee Senator Bill Frist Both interns Carey Davis a 2001 graduate of Halls and David Ramey a 2002 graduate of Halls are college students interested in becoming involved in their government Davis a rising junior at Samford University could not believe ldquohow many constituents are really interested in the government and take the time to call their senatorrdquo Ramey has had the same experience inside the office but also had the chance to see some of the effects of government firsthand He traveled to Hunstville Tennessee for the Senatorrsquos office to attend the opening of a new rural housing development for low income families

Both interns have not only had the opportunity to work in Fristrsquos Knoxville office this summer but to meet the senator as well On June 30 the interns had the chance to speak with the senator in Gatlinburg as Fristrsquos family took their annual hike in the Smokies

Strong bonds help Fountain City Halls Powell change with times -- By ED MARCUM marcurnknewscom March 30 2003

North Knoxville and North Knox County are home to many communities striving to keep their close-knit nature while undergoing growth

Whether it s a rapidly developing area like Powell or a more settled community l ike Fountain City residents seem to see the value of keeping community ties tight

Fountain City IS a community of longtime residents and we all seem to know each other I t is more of a family-oriented community even though it is located within Knoxville said Max Alvarez longtime member of the Fountain City Lions Club

I guess thats what I like about Fountain City I t s a small town in a large city

Margaret Massey-Cox of the Powell Community Club neighborhood organization said even though Powell is growing with the development of the Interstate 75Emory Road interchange there is still a strong sense of community

You see it in several different areas she said You see it in participation in community events involvement in the schools and the pride we take in our community

For example all sorts of youth sports from softball to rugby thrive in Powell for both boys and girls teams

And I think one thing that is unique is that there is as much pride in the Powell High School Band as in the football team Massey-Cox said

The Powell Community Club has worked with Knox County to get a greenway established in Powell with the hope that such a corridor will serve as a focal point for community activities

Fountain City Lake and Fountain City Park already serve that purpose in Alvarezs community he says The Lions Club has devoted much t lme to maintaining and improving Fountain City Lake and Park

People know that if they want a place they can go on a fitness walk or a park for kids to play thats where to go When they see the fountain at Fountain City Lake they know that they are in the center of Fountain City Alvarez said

Fountain City developed a t about the same time as Knoxville John Adair who had a land grant from North Carolina settled in the 1780s about six miles north of Knoxville in an area he called Grassy Valley but later came to be known as Fountain Head because of its natural springs As the settlement grew and a post office was opened in 1890 the community changed Its name to Fountain City It was one of the largest unincorporated communities in the country before Knoxville annexed it in 1962

Powell to the northwest of Fountain City takes its name from a railroad depot named after Columbus Powell one of its prominent residents when the Tennessee Virginia and Georgia Railroad built a line through the area in 1860

The community grew up along the railroad and was noted for such industries as cordwood shipping and a brickyard that supplied brick for about 40 years

A neighbor to Powell to the east so Halls began as Halls Crossroads named because the community developed at the junction of what is now Emory Road and Andersonville Pike These were main routes when North Knox County was being settled and Halls got i t s start when Pulaski Hall built a general store at the crossroads in

the 1860s

From that one store in i t5 earliest days Halls now has more than half the commercial development in North Knox County an MPC study shows

What became Knoxville started in the 1790s when Scottish-Irish settlers came to the area which a t that t ime was home to the Cherokee Indians lames White from North Carolina was the first known settler He established a fort that became the site where William Blount then governor of the Southwest Territory signed a treaty with the Cherokee in 1791 opening Knox County to settlement

Also rhat year White sold land around the fort for a town that Blount named Knoxville after Henry Knox President George Washingtons war secretary The town was incorporated in 1815

Knoxville was occupied first by Confederate troops then by Union soldiers during the Civil War and the City became known for its mixed loyalties often with members of families fighting for different sides in the conflict

After the war Knoxvilles railroads helped the city enter a period of growth Industries flourished and new neighborhoods sprouted including Mechanicsville Brownlow Fort Sanders Old North Knoxville Fourth amp Gill Emory Place Park City and others Streetcars then automobiles fueled further expansion
