Saint Alphonsus and Saint Alexis News DEVOTIONAL PREPARATION FOR RECEIVING THE KING OF KINGS By Dave VanVickle, Director for Evangelization

As we continue our discussion of preparing for Communion, I want to continue something very simple: A devotional preparation for receiving Holy Communion. It is really simple to get your mind and heart ready for the Lord. Here are some simple prayers I use to prepare myself to receive Our Lord.

Prayer Before Communion by St. Thomas Aquinas

Almighty and Eternal God, behold I come to the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. As one sick, I come to the Physician of life; unclean, to the Fountain of mercy; blind, to the Light of eternal splendor; poor and needy to the Lord of heaven and earth. Therefore, I beg of You, through Your infinite mercy and generosity, heal my weakness, wash my uncleanness, give light to my blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness. May I thus receive the Bread of Angels, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, with such reverence and humility, contrition and devotion, purity and faith, purpose and intention, as shall aid my soul’s salvation. Grant, I beg of You, that I may receive not only the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of our Lord, but also its full grace and power. Give me the grace, most merciful God, to receive the Body of your only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, in such a manner that I may deserve to be intimately united with His mystical Body and to be numbered among His members. Most loving Father, grant that I may behold for all eternity face to face Your beloved Son, whom now, on my pilgrimage, I am about to receive under the sacramental veil, who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

Prayer After Communion by St. Thomas Aquinas

I thank You, Lord, Almighty Father, Everlasting God, for having been pleased, through no merit of mine, but of Your great mercy alone, to feed me, a sinner, and Your unworthy servant, with the precious Body and Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not be for my judgment and condemnation, but for my pardon and salvation. Let this Holy Communion be to me an armor of faith and a shield of goodwill, a cleansing of all vices, and a rooting out of all evil desires. May it increase love and patience, humility and obedience, and all virtues. May it be a firm defense against the evil designs of all my visible and invisible enemies, a perfect quieting of all the desires of soul and body. May this Holy Communion bring about a perfect union with You, the one true God, and at last, enable me to reach eternal bliss when You will call me. I pray that You bring me, a sinner, to the indescribable Feast where You, with Your Son and the Holy Spirit, are to Your saints true light, full blessedness, everlasting joy, and perfect happiness. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist

Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist, I adore Thee. Sweet Companion of our exile, I adore Thee.

Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, I adore Thee. Heart solitary, Heart humiliated, I adore Thee.

Heart abandoned, Heart forgotten, I adore Thee. Heart despised, Heart outraged, I adore Thee.

Heart ignored by men, I adore Thee. Heart, Lover of our hearts, I adore Thee.

Heart pleading for love, I adore Thee. Heart patient in waiting for us, I adore Thee. Heart eager to hear our prayers, I adore Thee.

Heart desiring that we should pray to Thee, I adore Thee. Heart, Source of fresh graces, I adore Thee.

Heart silent, desiring to speak to souls, I adore Thee. Heart, sweet Refuge of the hidden life, I adore Thee.

Heart, Teacher of the secrets of union with God, I adore Thee. Heart of Him Who sleeps, yet ever watches, I adore Thee.

Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Jesus Victim, I wish to comfort Thee; I unite myself to Thee; I offer myself in union with Thee. I count myself as nothing before Thee; I desire to forget myself in order to think of Thee, to be forgotten and despised for love of Thee, not to be understood, not to be

loved, except by Thee. I will hold my peace that I may listen to Thee; I will forsake myself that I may lose myself in Thee. Grant that I may quench Thy thirst for my salvation, Thy burning thirst for my sanctification, and that, being purified, I may

bestow on Thee a pure and true love. I would no longer weary Thine expectations; take me, I give myself to Thee. I entrust to Thee all my actions—my mind that Thou mayest enlighten it, my heart that Thou mayest direct it, my will that Thou mayest establish it, my

misery that Thou mayest relieve it, my soul and my body that Thou mayest feed them. Eucharistic Heart of my Jesus, Whose Blood is the life of my soul, may it be no longer I who live, but Thou alone Who livest in me. Amen.

Add these simple prayers into your Mass times to get yourself ready.

Our Uniqueness Before God – God Made Who? Men’s Fellowship Meeting – August 12, 2019 By Jerry Tullius and Tom Walker On August 12, the Men’s Ministry group met to discuss “God Made Who? – Our Uniqueness Before God.” Why did God create us in the first place, and have we faithfully striven to fulfill His special calling for us? Everyone past, present and future is a child of God and truly unique from anyone who has ever existed and who will come into existence in the future. Our DNA and fingerprints are exclusively ours…no one else ever will have them. Do we get too bogged down with job, money, and life’s everyday issues and place God our creator to a secondary position or are we putting God and His plan first? Our job and focus in life is to get to heaven and help as many as we can to get there also. We are created in order to make a difference –“who is going to heaven because of me?” How do we attract others to this all-important goal - by imitating Jesus Christ in how he lived his ordinary life. Often, we succumb to peer pressure and a need for human respect versus living a Christian life leading to heaven. However, we remember that our Church and Faith are not for saints but are meant for sinners who are striving for sainthood. Service to others by giving of self is a way to salvation – mirroring Christ’s many examples of service. This service must be as concerned for someone’s spiritual needs as for their material needs. A lively discussion continued at Cenci’s following our meeting. All men of the parish are welcome to join us at 6:00 p.m. every other Monday evening – check the bulletin for dates.
