ROMA

NAPOLI

Welcome to Italy

Italy, a peninsula immersed in the Mediterranean Basin and bound to the north by the Alps, is well-known in the world for its art, culture, musical traditions and – a much-appreciated feature – excellent cuisine and fine wines.

Italy is one of the founding Member States of the European Union – we recall the Treaties signed in Rome on 25 March 1957 – as well as a member of the Council of Europe.

Italy is composed of Regions (5 of which enjoy Special Statute), Provinces (2 of which enjoy Special Statute), Municipalities and Mountain Communities. The population totals approximately 60 million inhabitants. Rome is the capital city within which is located Vatican City, an independent State. Another tiny State surrounded by Italian territory is the Republic of San Marino.

Owing to its geographic specificity – bordering to the North with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, and to the East, South and West are surrounded by the Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean – Italy’s territory is extremely varied from a morphologic and hydrogeologic viewpoint.Sea, hill and mountain are set harmoniously in this context.

Welcome to Naples

To visit Naples means immersing oneself in an ambient of extraordinary complexity and beauty: 2,500 years of history represented and reconstructed by artistic and architectural testimonials of enormous value.

This fascinating city traces its origin to the first colonisation of the territory, which dates from the IX century BC, nearly 3,000 years ago, when "Anatolian and Achaean traders and travellers appeared in the gulf to head for the mineral emporiums of the upper Tyrrhenian" and founded Parthenope in the area that includes the islet of Megaride (today’s Castel dell'Ovo) and the Promontory of Monte Echia (today’s Monte di Dio and Pizzofalcone).

Subsequently, after various wartime events, Parthenope was abandoned and took the name of "Palepolis" (old city). In 475 AD, thanks to the inhabitants of Cuma, Neapolis (new city) was founded in the eastern part of the original city.

Neapolis was built on a plan called Ippomadeo, also known as "per strigas," a street system laid out in orthogonal fashion, still visible in the modern city.

Not just one city exists, but several different ones, fitting within one another to form overlapping realities that are sometimes quite different but linked by an invisible common thread.

To set out to discover Naples means undertaking a marvellous journey in the human soul and its infinite facets.

Naples’ sea of a thousand colours, long tradition of fine wine and gastronomy, and the folklore of its narrow streets make it an unforgettable city, able to captivate all "the senses" of its visitors.

Welcome to Castel dell’Ovo

The name Castel dell’Ovo – literally Egg Castle – probably derives from the shape of the monument, but a medieval legend associates it with the egg that Virgil is said to have hidden inside a cage in the castle dungeon. The destiny of the city was closely tied to that egg: as long as it remained intact, Naples would have nothing to fear.

The monumental complex rises on the islet of Megaride, an ancient Greek settlement that, together with the neighbouring areas, formed the setting for the villa of Lucullus in the Roman period.

At present, the castle rooms are used in part for meetings and congresses, and in part for housing exhibitions.
