Reflection of the Week In his letter to the Philippians, our Second Reading on this Palm Sunday, St. Paul writes, “…he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Everything we hear today and during Holy Week relates to this statement.
For some 2,000 years scholars and theologians have debated what the phrase “emptied himself” means. As is sometimes the case, in the midst of these debates and discussions they lose focus of what is really Paul’s point and teaching perhaps. One of the things Paul might be trying to get us to think about is emptying ourselves to a certain extent. If you have ever been a retreat or been part of a spiritual exercise, you may be encouraged to “empty yourself” so you are prepared to in reality add something.
Jesus gave much up to be the Son of Man. At this point in our Lenten journey, we need to grasp that He gave up His life so that we might have life. That is what should be on our minds as we hear the Passion today and as we continue and complete our own preparation for Christ’s resurrection on Easter.
Have you ever heard someone say about someone else “He (or she) is so full of himself (or herself)?” Jesus was not “full of Himself.” He emptied Himself, and that is something we, too, must strive to do to be His disciple.

Lenten Regulations
It is this time of year when most of us are a bit confused about
what the proper observances are for the season
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. Fasting is generally understood to be 1 meal without
snacking during the day. Many people mitigate the ob-servances with 2 small meals that do not equal the sum of the 3rd. All Catholics without medical problems are obliged to the law of fast, beginning at age 18 and con-
tinuing through age 59. Ash Wednesday, All Fridays of Lent and Good Fri-
day, are days of abstinence. This law applies to all Catholics 14 years of age and older. No meat or visible meat products in other foods may be consumed, includ-ing wild game, fowl, lamb, pork or beef. Soy, milk prod-
ucts, eggs, cheese, fish and shellfish are permitted.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the “Road of Sorrows,” in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for
Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today’s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have
their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion’s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir
shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are
not known, but what matters is the pilgrim’s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something
more than meets the eye. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
