Welcome to Barcelona, (Spain)
The CENTRE DE RESTAURACIÓ DE BÉNS MOBLES DE CATALUNYA and the ESCOLA SUPERIOR DE CONSERVACIÓ I
RESTAURACIÓ DE BÉNS MOBLES CATALUNYA, Barcelona (Spain) are excited to host the 3rd
International
Conservation Symposium-Workshop of Natural History Collections in Barcelona (Spain) from NOVEMBER 21-24
2017.
The main purpose of this 3
rd Symposium-Workshop is to emphasize all those concepts related to protection
and conservation of Natural History Collections.
In this edition, we plan to cover:
Conferences by international professionals.
Attendees’ communications.
Poster presentations.
Practical classes and experience exchanges.
We would like to avoid all those theoretical lectures that are useful only for a few professionals
working in this field. Our aim is to focus towards a practical point of view, which will achieve a better
learning and gain international importance. For this reason, we will combine conferences given by an
interdisciplinary team of conservators from world renowned collections. There will be time for attendees’
communications, as well as poster presentations, in order to find global solutions.
Following the Symposium we propose producing a publication. All the talks, attendee’s presentation
and posters would be included.

ABSTRACT WORKSHOPS
1- “LASER SYSTEM CLEANING TESTS, CASE STUDIES ON DIFFERENT INORGANIC MATERIALS: STONE, FOSSIL,
CERAMIC & MURAL PAINTING”
PERE ROVIRA
Centre of Restoration of Cultural Heritage in Catalonia - (CRBMC) SPAIN
RUDI RANESI
Arcovaleno Restauro, SL – ITALY
Part 1: Knowledge of the laser hardware. Shape and function. Health and safety. Methodology and
efficiency. Application parameters.
Part 2: Laser cleaning test. (Each participant can bring material of his own to do the tests)
Laser cleaning processes require a deep knowledge of the device. The laser is a powerful source of light that
cleans the object by a sublimation process, but it is only effective with certain kinds of alterations and the
base material influences the process deeply. It is essential that the restorer has a very specific knowledge of
the laser device and its potential to act adequately on the work. Incorrect use of the laser device can alter the
object irreversibly. This workshop intends to give first basic knowledge to professional restorers and a little
contact with the laser device, without trying to train specialized professionals. A first approach to the
application of laser in conservation-restoration and to see directly the result of its application.
2- “BIO-CONTAMINATION: RECOGNITION, CONTROL AND TREATMENT”
DR. AGNOKO-MICHÈLE GUNN
Head of service of Preventive Conservation in Centre des Monuments Nationaux- FRANCE
- Recognition of bio-contamination.
- Identification of bio-contaminants (pest recognition).
- Biological risk assessment.
- Pest prevention.
- How to choose appropriate pest treatments.
Why organic materials are so sensitive to bio-contaminants. What about inorganic materials? How
environment contributes to degradation caused by bio-contaminants. The world of microorganisms. The
world of insects. Prevention: Introduction to IPM (Integrated Pest Management), inspection and monitoring.
Methods of treatment: what can be done by staff members and what must be left to the specialists?
3- “LOW-COST 3D TECHNIQUES”
ANDRÉS SANTOS-CUBEDO
Researcher in the Area of Crystallography and Mineralogy of the Department of Agrarian Sciences and the Natural Environment of the Jaume I University. Director of the Municipal Museum of Archeology and Ethnology of Bejís (Castellón). Director of the Cinctorres Museographic Collection (Castellón).
The irruption in the market of new, affordable equipment for the general public like 3D scanners and printers
opens a series of new possibilities, which up until now were only available for big companies. The combined
use of these new technologies together with specific software opens a wide range of applications in
museums and natural history collections. Many institutions are already putting these concepts to use, and
their results can be searched in different webs. In this workshop there will be an introduction to the different
hardware available right now, followed by a practical part to get to know the different applications in
collections and museums. Three techniques will be taught Photogrammetry, Structured light and Infrared
Sensor. All of them will allow us to 3D scan several models. Using one or another will be determined by
object size, aimed resolution, hard ware availability and process complexity. In fact, methodology and used
techniques will be able to be used on different subjects to get the digitalization and 3D reproduction of
many kinds of objects. The low-cost 3D scanning and printing is now a reality at the reach of everyone.
4- “PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION: ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION MONITORING PLANNING AND MEASURE
DEVICES”
RUTH BAGAN
Centre of Restoration of Cultural Heritage in Catalonia – (CRBMC) SPAIN
. The purpose of the workshop is to give its participants the basic tools in order to do a correct planning of the
environmental conditions monitoring. Information will be given about the several measuring devices we
have a tour reach, which criteria must be followed when trying one, how to program them, doing the data
collection and what are the capabilities of the different software for the analysis and interpretation of the
collected data.

Design:
Maximum length 1.20m and maximum width 1m.
A descriptive title (banner format) must be included in the upper part of the poster.
It must be easy to read from 3m apart.
Author(s) name(s) and institution(s) must also be included.
The poster main text must begin with an introduction and end with some conclusions.

The text must be readable from 1m apart.
All posters must be self-explanatory, so that they can be understood without the help of the authors(s).
Figure captions must be used, so that figures can be understood without having to read the whole text.
Posters can be presented in Spanish. However, we recommend that they are written in English, as long
as they are revised and they contain no grammatical errors.
We strongly recommend that poster presentations should be creative.
All posters must be designed in portrait format (vertical) and not landscape, because of poster holders.
Contents:
The introduction section must explain the basis of the work done and indicate the direction taken by
the author(s)
The methodology used must be presented clearly.
All the results must be presented clearly in an understandable way, and they must confirm the final
conclusions.
The conclusions must be consistent with the problems or questions explained or proposed in the
introduction.
LANGUAGE OF SYMPOSIUM
The languages used during the 3
rd International Conservation Symposium – Workshop will be
SPANISH and ENGLISH.
There will be simultaneous translation in these two languages: Conferences & attendee’s
presentations, but the workshops will be only in English.
PUBLICATION SYMPOSIUM PAPERS
We are very happy to host also the 3rd
Symposium Volume for the International Conservation Symposium-
Workshop of Natural History Collections. All contributors to the symposium are invited to send their
manuscript for publication. We'd just like to inform you about a few points we learned from our first
experience, and which will speed up the publication process:
the manuscripts will go through the normal process of publication, therefore all papers will be peer-
reviewed by professionals in the respective fields
manuscripts should be provided with the normal structure of a scientific paper (abstract,
introduction, main body, conclusion, acknowledgments, references), and with line-numbering
transcripts for talks should be rewritten as a paper, and poster texts should be expanded to include
abstract, introduction, and conclusions
all papers should follow some simple style rules, for which a template will be soon available online, or
can be requested directly from the editor-in-chief
authors who are not fluent in English preferably ask a native English speaker to check their
manuscripts before submitting
authors should submit manuscripts in Microsoft Office Word format (preferably .doc) or ODF text
document (.odt) directly to our editor-in-chief by email: [email protected]
The final Symposium Volume will include all contributions in a single special volume from JPT, which will
be freely available online, under the license CC-BY, but researchers can choose any other creative commons
license if they wish to do so
