OVERVIEW AND CLASS PROCEDURES

Page 2: Welcome to 8 th Grade Science Mrs. Guthrie: 8B Room 807

IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF A CLEAN SHEET OF PAPER: *YOUR FIRST AND LAST NAME *TODAY’S DATE *YOUR SCIENCE CLASS and STUDENT NUMBER: S1, S2, S3, S4,

OR S5 followed by your student number. ( Example: S1-5 or S3-12)

Starting on the second line of your paper: number from 1 to 3

Write the answers to the following questions. Use complete sentences with proper grammar rules.

(1) What do you think science is? (2) Describe some advantages of studying science. (3) What is the most interesting thing you have ever learned about science? When and where did you learn this?

A) When the bell rings, class starts. You should already have you pencil or pen ready with YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK (SNB) open.

(B) When the bell rings, talking stops and learning begins. (C) When the bell rings, immediately start working on the

bell work on the screen. (D) We raise our hand and patiently and silently wait to be

acknowledged. (E) We write our first and last name in the top right corner of

our papers. Beneath our names we write the date. Beneath the date we write the class period and student

number. (Example: S3-6 or S1-12)

Biodiversity and Change Classification key to organisms, adaptations and predictions of

populations, environmental conditions, earth’s biodiversity, relative age of fossils

Chemical Reactions Common outcome of chemical changes, classify element or compounds

based on their symbols or formulas, differentiate between a mixture and a compound, determine physical and chemical changes, identify the reactants and products of a chemical reaction, law of conservation of mass, basic properties of acids and bases

Properties of MatterRecognize all matter consists of atoms, describe the chemical makeup of the atmosphere, determine density based on mass and volume, use the periodic table to determine the properties of an element

Forces of NatureElectricity can be produced by a magnet and coil, principles of an electromagnet, Earth’s magnetic field, distinguish between mass and weight with appropriate measuring instruments and units, determine relationship among the mass and distance of objects and the amount of gravitational attraction, illustrate how gravity controls the motion of objects in the solar system
