CYCLE C JULY 31, 2016

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich,

one's life does not consist of possessions." This isn't a message

that gets much advertising. On the contrary, just about every

advertised message we hear comes from someone who wants to

make money by selling us possessions. The message we hear loud

and clear on television or Internet ads or on highway billboards or

the back cover of magazines is that we need this product or that

service in order to be happy. Professional marketers are in the

business of creating a supposed need and then promising to fill it

with their product. In today's culture, it's hard to remember that

life isn't about possessions.

But in this Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is more to life than

having "so many good things stored up for many years." All of this

stuff-be it clothes, devices, equipment, decorations,

entertainment centers, or anything else-does no lasting good if

and when "this night your life will be demanded of you." Unlike

the fool who spends all of his time, energy, and money building

larger barns, we should focus our resources on becoming "rich in

what matters to God."

This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. It means sharing our

money with those in need instead of hoarding it out of selfish

greed. The call is a challenging one, and countercultural too. But

Jesus never said that the Christian way was the way of the world.

As St. Paul instructs us in today's epistle, "Put to death, then, the

parts of you that are earthly." Instead of falling for the marketers'

messages, may we have the wisdom to store up our treasure in

heaven.

Air conditioning in the church: The

air conditioning system is hard at work keeping our church cool so please dress comfortably for Mass. If you are cold natured, we suggest bringing a jacket or sweater with you. There is no way to easily adjust the temperature during Mass or maintain a constant temperature in all areas of the church. The blower is essentially on or off, and when it is off, the church becomes warm rather quickly, especially around the altar. Thank you for your understanding.

As summer draws to an end it is time to start thinking about

the RCIA program here at St. Jude’s.

What is RCIA? It is a program designed to bring non-

Catholics into full communion with the Church. It helps

Catholics who are lacking some of their sacraments to be

able to complete their journey and fulfill these blessings. It

is a way for those who have shared the Catholic faith for

years to be able to refresh their knowledge and

understanding of our faith. It is also for those who have no

faith background and are looking to enter into the Catholic

Church.

Our program begins the last Wednesday in August and

continues through the end of May. We meet on Wednesday

evenings at St. Jude’s. Evening Mass is at 6:30, class begins

at 7:00. Instruction lasts one hour. A full meal is served

after instruction and childcare is provided for those with

small children.

We have a wide variety of speakers to present our lessons

and help to explain what we believe as Catholics and why

we have these beliefs. It is a very open environment and we

welcome all who are interested in exploring our program.

I look forward to embarking on this faith journey with those

who are interested. More information will be posted as we

get closer to the start of classes. Enjoy the rest of your

summer break and I hope to see many of you in the fall!

Your servant in Christ,

Anne Gallegos, RCIA Director
