Many of you may have seen in the Arkansas Catholic, or simply heard through the grapevine, that there will be a priest in residence of the next several months. Many of you I have already had the pleasure of meeting, but for those who don’t know, I’m Fr. Matt Garrison, and I will be in residence here at St. Jude until around the first of December, at which time I will be assigned to another parish in Arkansas. I was most recently assigned as Rector of the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock, where I had the pleasure of serving for the last six years, and I will be spending the next several months in a temporary tech position with the 189th ANG Wing. I have been a chaplain with the 189th for a little more than six years, but I’ve never had a good opportunity to get to know the men and women with whom I have served. These next few month will give that much needed opportunity. Than you to Fr. Andy, and all of you for allowing me to be here with you. You won’t see me around the parish much during the week, but I will be assisting with the weekend Masses. I look forward to meeting all of you, and again ...thank you! Fr. Matt

Jesus said to the synagogue official, "Do not be afraid; just have
faith." When they arrived at the house of the synagogue
official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and
wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, "Why this
commotion and weeping?
The child is not dead but asleep." - Mk 5:36bc, 38-39

Blessing for Independence Day
There is a saying, "To those whom much is given, much is
expected." That saying is from “Uncommon Wisdom of
John F. Kennedy: A Portrait in His Own Words.” That saying
should sum up our thoughts as we celebrate the founding
of our country. As we look at our history, we may easily see
that much has been given to this country, and many have
sacrificed to make sure we have kept those gifts. However,
our faith informs us that a gift reaches its ultimate good
only when it is given away freely.
We have many gifts, and our country has a long tradition of
giving many gifts to other nations. Moreover, sometimes it
seems as if those gifts are not appreciated. Nevertheless,
we continue to give. Let us pray for this great country of
the United States of America:
God our Father, from whom all good gifts come,
we are thankful for rest and food.
Grant that, in all we do or say, we keep your goodness
always in our thankful hearts. We entreat you to bless all
those who work to keep us safe, and ask your blessings on
all those who work to share our blessings with others
around the world. We ask all this in the name of our
brother and Savior, Jesus. Amen.

Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence
Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he
needs to carry out his charitable works around the world.
The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of
war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a
witness of charity to those who are suffering.

The people of Ethiopia are plagued by a severe drought. It has
not rained in two years. The drought creates big issues for the
whole community. No water means no food for families,
crops, or livestock, and no school for kids because they are
malnourished and weak. Catholic Relief Services is working on
a new project to help families to collect rainwater and learn
climate-smart agriculture.
