ARE WE LIKE HEROD?

"And we need to ask ourselves: Who are we,

as we stand before the Child Jesus? Who are

we, standing as we stand before today's chil-

dren? Are we like Mary and Joseph, who

welcomed Jesus and cared for him with the

love of a mother and father? Or are we like

Herod, who wanted to eliminate him? Are

we like the shepherds, who went in haste to

kneel before him and offer their humble gifts?

Or, are we indifferent?"

Reflection: During this season, we are

called to invite the Child Jesus more deeply

into our hearts. Imagine the scene of the Na-

tivity or take a look at a Nativity set. Ponder

the Child Jesus. Who are you before him?

Who are you before today's children? What

more can you do to be more merciful?

Ponder with the pope

CHRISTIAN FAITH FORMATION

Everyday Stewardship

Do you practice good stewardship with your family? Stewardship is about more than offerings to a church or charity. It is

about continually giving of ourselves in a way that gives glory to God. Sharing our gifts with those in our immediate family

honors God and is evidence of your gratitude for these people in your life.

How can we effectively accomplish this? One way is to reflect on how the 6 characteristics of an Everyday Steward are

present in our family relationships. Are we mindful when we are with our family members? Do we focus on them and their

needs rather than our phone or TV? Do we hold up our family in prayer? Their concerns should be our concerns. Do we

find ways to show how grateful we are for having them in our lives?

When we find ourselves lacking in gratitude, we should reflect on what life would be like without them. Do we help one

another without being asked because we have a gracious heart? It is easy to take for granted those we see all the time.

Hospitality is not just for the stranger or guest. Are we committed to a life of stewardship that not only serves as a good

example, but also helps our relatives thrive? Using our gifts without wisdom might mean we have little to give to those we

love. Finally, do we hold each other accountable for our decisions and shortcomings?

We are on the journey of life together, and no one exists in the Body of Christ alone. Stewardship is about the entirety of

our lives. Our faith life is not reserved to Mass on a Sunday. It all begins and ends with those we love.

DECEMBER 30TH, 2018 FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY

The National Shrine of Mary, Mother of the Church

So for the last days of 2018, what can we reflect on? Did we share our faith with others? Did we give our love to those who

needed it? Did our prayers include peace in the world? Are we feeling good about our stewardship?

I, like many try to think about what I did to make the world a better place. I also think about how I can be a better person

in the year to come. Resolutions are not something I do because they seem to fall by the wayside within a few weeks. But

since I have spent so much time at St. Patrick’s this year and have put a lot of thought into the Shrine and Blessed Mary, I

can feel myself moving in a new direction. How did Mary feel becoming the Mother of Jesus? Did she know that she

would become Mother to all of us? We cannot what her days were like. But, we do know that she watched her son try to

save the world from sin.

As a mother myself, I certainly remember how proud I have been of everything my son has accomplished.

Now contemplating on the beginning of 2019, I want to try and keep my focus on living a good life. I want to be kinder to

my neighbors. I want to do what I can to show my faith to my friends and family. I want to be proud to call myself a

Christian. The world needs it and so do I.

Have a blessed New Year celebration.

GM of the Shrine

(still, a volunteer position)

Thank to all who have given gifts and donated thus far.

The Shrine fundraising is still ongoing. We raised

$234,000 through our first attempt. The second at-

tempt is still coming in and has raised around $1,500.

Our curren0t donations f0r the last quarter are shown

below and will be published on a monthly basis going

forward. The major renovation work on the Shrine will

begin in early January and be finished by April of 2019.

We hope to have a new person in place early in the first

quarter. The new position will be called Development

Coordinator. There will be a lot of opportunities for vol-

unteering for the pilgrimages. We will be in great need

of teams to cook, greeters, and people to guide the

guests. The search for pilgrimage speakers is happen-

ing now and the dates will be set. I hope we can find

volunteers willing to take leadership roles in all the

teams mentioned. Listen to your heart.

The shop is run solely, 100%, upon the many gracious and reliant volunteers. It’s

success is contributed to these parishioners, and for that, the parish office is very thank-

ful.

If you would like to assist in the function of the Gift Shop next year, as there is always

Liturgical schedule for January 5th & 6th

Children are a heritage from the Lord,

offspring a reward from him.

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior

are children born in one’s youth. Psalm 127:3-4

It is hard to be a dad. In my personal experience with three kids, full of energy, it doesn’t offer me many opportunities to be calm and just let the time pass. I

must always keep track of them. If not, surely something unexpected will happen.

I feel the same applied to Joseph and Mary. Jesus, at twelve years old, was a kid full of energy. He ran, jumped, played, laughed, and was curious. We can’t

separate the fact that Jesus was both human and divine. But as a child… he got lost in the midst of the caravan.

I think that we are receiving a very good teaching from this gospel. Sometimes we forget that the “privilege” of a family is a gift from the Lord. It is a reward

from God. And, like arrows in the hands of a warrior, we have to fight every day by praying, by being an example, and by throwing these arrows as far as we

can. This is our hope that we know our kids belong to God. We watch them and take care of them. And, if we do it right, like Joseph and Mary did, no matter

whether they get lost in the caravan of life for a short time, they always will return to their Father's house.

Joel Rosario, Music Ministry Director
