WELCOME

Dear orienteers from all over the world,

From the Club de Orientació Catalunya, COC, and the City Council of Barcelona,

we welcome you to the 13th edition of the Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona,

TICBCN 2019.

We are preparing circuits, as well as other complementary activities, which we

hope will be exciting and fun for all participants. This is our wish and the driving

force that pushes us to make the TICBCN once again a sporting and recreational

event. Our aim is that you, the participants, end up with a smile on your face; this

will mean that the job was well done.

PRESENTATION The International Trophy Ciutat de Barcelona (TICBCN) is a competition that started with the

aim of allowing Catalan selection to share an event with other European elite selections.

Later, its aim was modified and it was opened to all participants individually. The competition

has kept through its nine editions its playful nature. The organizers are working with the idea

to achieve that all participants might enjoy the races and the city of Barcelona, which is now

a touristic and sportive reference site worldwide.

The Orienteering Club of Catalonia and the City Council welcome you to our city. We hope

you to have a good stay and to get the most out of the races that we have prepared.

Now, on its 13th edition, we are preparing an event with two programmed races:

• 09/11/2019 Middle distance race at Parc Güell and Barri de Gràcia.

• 10/11/2019 Long distance City Race Euro Tour at the historical quarters of the city.

The winner of TIC BCN 2019 will come out of the sum of the timings obtained on the two races.

The closest airport to the city is Barcelona-El Prat where major airline companies

operate (15 km away).

Girona airport is also near Barcelona (80km away).

TIME-KEEPING

All categories, including those for beginners, will be controlled through the SportIDENT

system. To do so, runners will need an electronic card or chip, which will be hired to all

participants who need them.

ARRIVAL On arrival, the finish line SportIDENT base must be punched.

Competitors should then address to the finish tent to download the SportIDENT chip to the

computer that records the results. If the chip is hired, it has to be returned. In the event of

loss 50€ will have to be paid.

IMPORTANT: please, proceed to the arrival tent and download your chip even if you did

not finish the race! This will let us to know that no participant has been lost or damaged.

Refreshment will be available to all runners.

ASPECTS TO KEEP IN MIND - Car Traffic: Traffic will not be cut off. Although traffic is limited in those areas, it is very

important to watch every time you cross any street. Please, respect the required neutralized

crossings, which will be monitored by the Organization staff and regulated with the

SportIDENT system. Pedestrian crossings regulated by traffic lights must be respected too.

- Atention to pedestrians: Due to the busy traffic of the city, you have to be very careful with

the cars and people. Always respect pedestrians as well as roadway rules.

- First aid: First aid service will be ready in the competition centre on Saturday and at the

arrival on Sunday. In caseof evacuation, the injured runner will be transferred to the nearest

Hospital of the area.

- Traffic-Works: We are running within an urban area and it is possible that works that do not

exist at the time of printing the map, may appear at the time of the race. Similarly, the Parks

and Gardens city service could change the green zone of the races if, unexpectedly,they

started working on an area.

- Locker-Space: COC staff will improvise a place where bags and objects could be placed,

but they will not be held responsible for any objects left there.

- Showers: in the competition centres there will be the opportunity to take a shower on

Saturday as well as on Sunday.

- WC Cabinets: toilets will be available in the competition centres on Saturday and Sunday.

- Refreshment: apart from public fountains existing along the circuit, a refreshment facility will

be provided at the end of each race in the competition centres.

- Footwear: Metal studs are not recommended. Versatile/multipurpose footwear is advisable.

- Children’s area (only Saturday): There will be an area available for children while their

parents are running where they can stay under their parents’ responsibility. Some COC staff

will supervise the area. Remember that those participants with very young children can ask

for a different starting time from their respective partners. These requests will be met if

possible.

COMPLAINTS Due to the type of race, we set that no circuit will be cancelled in the event of a control

misplacement.

In case of a claim for this reason, the technical jury might decide to cancel those legs

defined in the appealed control. Therefore, all runners must consider finishing the race even

though they find problems due to either the accessibility of the public to the controls or to

organizational errors. Any complaint must be submitted in writing before the prize giving

ceremony.

RESULTS Provisional results will be published in the competition centre and on the Internet.

PRIZES The first 3 competitors for each oficial and non-oficial categories will get a prize.

MIDDLE DISTANCE RACE: PARC GÜELL & BARRI DE

GRÀCIA

The middle distance race will run through the Gràcia neighborhood of Barcelona, where

Parc Güell is located too.

In fact the race runs through the Parc Güell but not on the touristical zone but through the

forest located to the north of the monumental part.

The competition center will be located in the Ateneu Lluïsos de Gràcia.

In order to run through the Parc Güell, those circuits corresponding to the shortest distance

routes are a little bit longer than what we propose in the next page table.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION The distance from the competition center to the Start is 500metres (15 minutes walk). The

arrival is located at the competition center (download Sportident, cloakroom, showers).

The maps will not be collected at the end of the race, we ask for fair play on the part of the

runners!

COURSE SETTER NOTES • In the Park Güell area there are three hills surrounded by a range of wide paths

(many to stroll around), and other type of minor paths but well delimited. All them

will allow you a good progression speed.

• In the same area, there are open zones with a clean and fast forest, and others that

are deep green 3.

• Since you will be running through part of the Parc Güell, it is very important to

preserve the zones indicated as prohibited areas, marked on the map with the

symbol 'Fuchsia framed'.

• The use of spike shoes is not allowed: You will be running in an environment

alongside historical and decorative stairs, or rocky areas and strolls, which could get

damaged otherwise.

• The central Parc Güell area is accessible through a toll gate. Runners are not

allowed to enter this area.

• As this is a set of hills, you will find here slopes and also margins to be taken into

account during the race.

• The “Tres Turons” and the Parc Güell surroundings allowed us to design circuits with a

significant positive slope, considering that we are running in Barcelona by the sea.

• There are crosspoints with great views of the city or Park Güell.

• In the lower part of this area, there are streets open to traffic.

• The upper part of the Gràcia quarters, is a city area open to traffic. Runners be

careful !

o Here you will find streets with reduced traffic. There is a set of streets with no

significant slopes or little slope.

o There are several squares in this area, with bar terraces marked in the map in

fuchsia color.

o There are some pedestrian only streets.

• The circuits, have been designed to pass through tourist areas, which means high

density of people in certain points. Remember to give way to pedestrians.

• All circuits, have a forced and neutralized crossing on the main road that separates

the two zones of the map.

LONG DISTANCE RACE: HISTORICAL QUARTERS

The long distance race, valid for the City Race Euro Tour, will be held around by Ciutat

Vella (the historical quarters of the city). The competition center will be located in the

Centre esportiu municipal Parc de la Ciutadella (Parc de la Ciutadella’s Sports Pavilion).

The maps will not be collected at the end of the race, we ask for fair play on the part of the

runners!

These circuits have had to be modified because of the Spanish National poll on the same

day. Nevertheless, the only change is that the Finish won’t be at Parc de la Ciutadella, but

near the Born market. The park is closed for the reason explained above.

This also means that the distances and the number of controls can be somewhat different

from that proposed at the time of issuing this booklet.

COURSE SETTER NOTES

• The streets are open to traffic, so run with caution.

• There will be a crossing regulated with traffic lights, with time neutralized on all

circuits

• You will run through emblematic areas of the city. It is usually not very crowded on a

Sunday morning, but you will find tourists discovering the hidden corners of our city.

We must remind you to give way to pedestrians.

Warning: in some streets, the cleaning services may have left wet

floor/grounds and it could be damp and slippery (pay especial

attention when turning corners!)

• In some categories more than 30 controls must be punched. Please, check the table

in the previous page and make sure that your SportIDENT model has enough

capacity to record them all!
