#SAY: Welcome to the School Team Training Series. I am excited to work with you over the next few days & this year as your learning leader. Our goal in this training is to support collaborative learning focused on increasing student achievement in Tennessee.

Over the next year we will achieve this goal through peer-led discussion & collaboration, direct applications to our classrooms and schools, and an in depth focus on student work.

(1 min) 3This summers School Team Training Series has three tracks PreK -2 Math & Literacy Grades 3-12 Math Grades 3-12 Literacy All Faculty will be assigned to either Math or Literacy training. OMS Learning Leaders: Literacy: Kane Ayres, Nona Carver, Stan Green, Jill McGuire. Math: Holly Dare, Janie Holland, Angie Jordan, Kent Smith.

#As teachers, you all know we have ambitious goals in Tennessee. It is our goal to be the fastest improving state in the nation. Well, this last fall we found out that, thanks to YOUR hard work and the hard work of so many teachers and leaders, we achieved this goal on the NAEP assessment.

Students in Tennessee grew more than students in any other state.

#In fact, students in Tennessee grew more than any students have ever grown on NAEP.

This shows us that our kids are capable of real growth.

This showed us that we are capable of leading this growth.

This showed us how far we can go.

(1 min)6We saw significant growth across all areas on the 2013 NAEP assessment.

#Our students grew in both reading and math at fourth and eighth grade.

In fact, in 3 out of 4 subject areas, we jumped over other states and we are no longer in the 40s. In 3 out of 4 subjects, our students are in the 30s.

Our work to grow our students is making them more competitive. It is giving them a brighter future and creating a brighter future for our whole state.

(1 min)7But we still have significant work to do. 2013 12th grade NAEP results showed Tennessee lagging behind other states

Note: ACT data is based on students who took the test in the standard time only, to allow for comparisons to previous years. The score for all students including extended time was 19.0. 819.119.019.219.3#That being said, we still have significant work to do. Our students have not shown as much progress on other metrics including the ACT and 12th grade NAEP. Our scores are stagnant in these areas.

In addition to statewide metrics, I know you all likely have a number of students on your minds that have struggled in school and need significant support in order to be successful in their futures.

As teachers and leaders, we have the enormous responsibility and privilege of helping deliver an education worthy of our students potential.

And that is what the School Team Training Series is designed to help us do.

(2 min)13The School Team Training Series will be an over time experience for our school. #This is a quick snapshot of how we will engage together as a school this year. We are kicking off with a summer PD day, and will follow up the learnings of this training throughout the school year in PLCs and in a day midyear.

(1 min)14Continuous Improvement Cycle Math/Literacy #As we engage across the year, we will each be doing bridge to practice exercises with students between sessions. This is found in your handbook on Page 5. The continuous improvement cycle is the backbone of the bridge to practice exercises we will all engage in as part of this content across the year. Bridges to practice essentially extend the learning from the training sessions to our classrooms by allowing us to give it a go with students.

After trying out some of the instructional lessons with students, we will analyze what worked and what gaps we saw. Then, we will make some modifications, try again, and come back together with other teachers to discuss our lessons learned. Those lessons learned will inform how we engage with students next. From here, the cycle repeats.
