HOMEWORK
• Homework will be given Monday through Thursday.
• Students will be responsible for writing homework each day in their planner.
• Homework will consist of math, reading, word work, social studies and science.
• Homework will be due on Fridays.
Planner
• Please initial each day.
• Teacher will use planner for any communication between parents and teacher.
• If you have any questions, please email your child’s teacher.
TransportationHow is your child getting home?
SCE transportation policy:
We will ONLY take a transportation changes in writing from the parent. This can be done 1 of 2 ways:
1.) Note from parent through the student/backpack
2.) Note dropped off at front office or form filled out at the front office in the morning.

•If student ID is lost, then parent will be responsible for replacement.
LUNCH
• Please make sure your child’s name is
on his/her lunch kit.
• If your child is planning on buying lunch at all this year, you can set up an account online with Mealpay Plus.
Snack Time
• Students may bring a healthy, non-messy, dry snack from home to eat while they are working. Students are allowed to have water bottles- It can ONLY contain water.
• Examples of healthy snacks are:
• pretzels
• Goldfish crackers
• crackers
• granola bars
Our Specials Time is 9:20-10:10.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
• Birthdays are very special days.
• We will celebrate birthdays during the last 5 minutes of school.
• Second grade requests birthday treats to be mini-cupcakes or cookies for the class due to limited amount of time we have to eat them.
• Please send the treats to the nurse upon arrival.
• No invitations will distributed at school.
Grades
• In second grade, students receive number grades.
• Grades are counted differently depending upon the assignments.
• Homework is always counted at 10%.
• All other assignments are counted at 90%.
• End of Unit Assessments are counted twice at 90%. All End of the Unit Assessment grades that are counted twice will be reassessed if your child receives a score below 70.
Reading
In second grade, we use a balanced approach to literacy.
Our Reading Workshop includes the following components:
Read Aloud
Shared Reading
Guided Reading
Independent Reading
Katy ISD Reading

• Beginning of 2nd grade, students should independently be reading at a level H/I
• End of the first grading period: I

• End of the third grading period: K
• End of the fourth grading period: K/L
WRITING
Balanced literacy includes Writer’s Workshop.
Second Graders will learn the writing process.
Our writing program consists of the following components:
• Guided Writing
• Independent Writing
• Shared Writing
• Grammar and Conventions
WORD STUDY
• A component of writing where we make words in class to apply to our daily writing.
• Each grading period we will have a district WORD STUDY Test that is part of the Language Writing grade.
• It is also posted on the KISD web site.

Math
Math is taught through a guided math model. The framework of guided math is a whole group mini-lesson, small group
instruction, skill-focused work-stations as well as independent practice.
Social Studies
The central themes on which our units will be developed include:
• ways in which important people have influenced the world
• citizenship
• communities
• group and individual decision making
• cultural celebrations
• national government
• economic systems
• using a wide variety of tools to gather information
• map skills/geography/continents/landforms
ScienceSecond graders will develop an understanding of science concepts through a hands-on learning approach. In 2nd grade, the science curriculum will provide opportunities for students to participate in the following:
• scientific process
• sound, force, and motion
• making charts, tables, and graphs to organize information
• using a variety of tools to gather information
• sun/moon
• weather/clouds
• organisms and environments
• human body/health
• plants
