City of Washington
I want to personally welcome you to our quaint, waterfront town. We are so glad you chose our town as a place to visit or relocate. As the director of the Chamber for the past 13 years, I have
watched Washington and Beaufort County emerge into a place where commerce is thriving and businesses are a vital piece to the personality of Washington. Each of our businesses have a story to tell and we offer a unique shopping district with restaurants, art galleries, retail and more. Our entrepreneurs make us special and each one contributes to the success of our town and region.
I am a native of Washington and I have been proud to watch the progress in our business community. I encourage you to visit their wonderful stores and get to know the owners. They are our
biggest advocates of the area and have embraced Washington and
what it wants to be. Visit all of our towns in Beaufort County as they each have unique shops and restaurants. We often hear that it is the people that make our town
unique. I would agree. Our people are extraordinary, and
we hope that you enjoy meeting them and perhaps decide you want to
be a part of our community. Either way we welcome you with a big “Hey Y’all” and we are glad you are here.

By MATT DEBNAMWashington Daily NewsFor the past 20 years, Greg Purser and Everett Duncan have built a business on add-ing unique touches to people’s homes. During those two de-cades, their business, The Purs-er’s Chest, has had 10 different homes, from Chocowinity to Main Street in Washington. In January, the business celebrat-ed its grand reopening in its latest venue, combining retail space with Little Shoppes and South Market Antiques after a soft opening in November. “We’ve always enjoyed be-ing downtown,” Purser said. “Every time we get away from it, we seem to get pulled back somehow. I think it’s more the people than anything else.” For Purser, his experience with antiques date back to his childhood. He and his grand-father used to visit an antique store in Chocowinity owned by
Bernard Winfield. It was in the so-called Winfield building, on the corner of N.C. Highway 33 and N.C. Highway 17, that Purs-
er would open up his first store many years later. “After Everett and I got to-gether, we both had an inter-
est in antiques, and I think Mr. Winfield sort of helped

how he transforms a block of wood into a work of art.“I will be making decoys in a traditional manner: chopping with a hatchet, smoothing them with a spokeshave, carving their heads with knives. These are real decoys; they’re not made to ride a shelf. They’re working decoys,” Talton said. His specialty is traditional decoys, with his own touch:

The Washington Historic Preservation Commission, dur-ing its meeting Tuesday night,
voted unanimously to recom-mend the City Council adopt a revision to the city’s tree-re-placement policy. The new tree policy, it is be-lieved, would provide for more
accountability from property owners regarding removal of a tree and replacing it. The new policy also takes into account the preferred time for relocat-ing trees rather than replacing
a tree anytime during the years.“This is a great idea. We’ve been needing this in place. Ya’ll did a really good job. I want to commend the committee,” said commission member Rebecca Clark.
Commission Chairman Mark Everett commended city staff for developing a form related to tree replacement, specifically the inclusion of a box for re-cording the date of the commis-sion’s action on tree removal
requests. It will make it easier for city staff to track progress on replacing the tree.Everett added: “I was just go-ing to say I appreciated all the
work the tree committee has done on this. I think its good to encourage longer-term species that will do well in this envi-ronment and enhance the his-toric district over many years
to come.”The existing policy reads: “If
a diseased, storm damaged or safety hazard tree is removed, it should be replaced by a suit-able species, as designated in
a approved landscaping plan, within sixty (60) days from the time of removal.”The proposed policy reads: “If
a diseased, storm damaged on safety hazard tree is removed, it should be replaced by a suit-able species, as designated in an
approved landscaping plan. The tree replacement must occur with one (1) year of removal, be-tween the months of September
1st and March 1st of the following year.”
In developing the amendment to the landscaping plan, the city produced a brochure about the new tree policy. The brochure
