COURSE COSTS

The course will pay for, or subsidise, most of the essential materials used during studio activities such as drawing and in practical workshops.

There will be some costs incurred during the second year of your course: we ask that all students get a Personal Art Pack top-up of key consumables to be bought from UCA’s online store for £85.

There is also a separate University Materials Charge of £130. If you’re under the age of 19 years at the start of your course you must pay this charge each year during online enrolment; if you’re over 19 at the start of the course the Materials Charge is included in the course fee.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS NEEDED

As you progress through your course and decide which pathway to study you may require further specialist materials and equipment.

Many will continue to be provided free of charge but the cost of others will vary depending on the nature and ambition of your work. There’s a very competitively priced shop on campus where you can purchase additional notebooks, art materials, mounting materials, papers etc.

Photocopying and professional quality digital printing (A4 up to large format A0+ sizes) is available through our print bureau at much reduced prices from those available commercially.

EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS RECOMMENDED

Each year there are a number of local day visits to museums, galleries and locations that play an important part in your study and serve to inform and enrich your studio work and portfolio. The range of visits will vary according to venue and cost of entry fees etc. Visits are for all students and the cost inclusive of transport is £60.

There is also a residential 5-6 day educational visit to Amsterdam in Year 2. This visit provides an opportunity to develop ideas and practical work in a stimulating and dynamic international context and will serve to further enhance your work and portfolio. The cost of the visit to Amsterdam is £290 and includes travel, B&B accommodation and entry to most venues. We offer an alternative UK programme with 2-3 single day visits for those few students unable to travel overseas. The cost of this alternative schedule is £50. In Year 2 either, your residential visit to Amsterdam (£290) or the UK alternative visits (£50) along with your local day visits (£60) and Personal Art pack top-up (£85) (packaged as either Option 1 or Option 2) will need to be to be bought from UCA’s online store.

We are committed to securing the best value for all visits by planning ahead and will only change the cost if circumstances are beyond our control.*Costs are for 2016/17 and may be subject to amendment for 2017/18.

SUMMER PROJECT

THE BRIEF

Extended Diploma is all about your ideas, your opinions, your creativity, your expression, your originality and your hard work. We would like to find out about you... What do you like? What do you dislike? What are your opinions? What is your aesthetic?

Over the summer we would like you to reflect upon these questions by documenting, collecting and listing your research.

Task 1Generate ten quick drawings, paintings, collagesor small 3D maquettes that could indicate who youare, where you come from, your traits, who or whatinspires you, what you love or hate. These can becreated through any media, and processes, and can be any size - just make sure they’re portable.

Task 2Take ten photographs of things which are valuable and inspirational to you. These will need to be printed out.

Task 3Collect ten images that inspire you from contemporary media, such as: magazines, books, film stills, games, internet sites, artists, designers and makers, and galleries you visit. There are some contextual references overleaf to guide you.

Task 4Experience ten activities that influence your creativity. Make a list of these. You are to present this in a sketchbook but this can be any size. We would like you to showcase your skills, abilities and interests.

From this research material we want you to makeone final outcome, reflecting what you’re interested in or concerned about, or emotions you want to express about your life and/or the world around you.

How you create your final outcome should alsoreflect how you like to work at this stage in yourlife. What you create and bring with you on your first day of the Extended Diploma course could be a painting, sculpture, photograph, drawing, print, textiles samples or fashion designs and so on - what you want to create is up to you. It can be made out of any media, any colour, any format. It could form part of a collection, a series of multiples or a single outcome.

The only requirement is it has to be portable, as you’ll have to bring it with you on your first day. You really do have the freedom to be yourself as a creative individual. There is no wrong or right; be playful, express yourself and show what you can and want to do.

Why are we asking you to do this?

To become an artist or designer you have to be aware of the world around you, the context in which art and design is made and your own view of the world. This will form the starting point of your work on the course. If you want to achieve a high standard of work, producing interesting and original ideas, thorough research is essential. This work will be assessed in the Autumn term. It is important that you complete the project to your highest standard.

Try to make this project extraordinary, and enjoyyour summer.
