Newsletter I love the change from Winter to Spring, with the appearance of lighter warmer evenings (and mornings) as well as the promise of new life, that comes with the burst of energy that the sun brings to our lile world. We have another three months of excing things for you to see, and do, at the Centre in this edion and I sincerely hope that you can visit us and make the most of the various opportunies featured on our diary page and in our weekly programme. We have all the usual things on offer this Spring ranging from art classes through to exercise groups, so why not brush off those cobwebs and come on down. One thing to menon is that we have now recruited two part me ICT tutors to provide professional tuion on the days we run the classes in the Centre, which should hopefully provide consistency and the level of support our users require. Please call the Centre for more details about how to book. As many of you know, we have a happy band of volunteers at the Centre, who generously give their me to support the ongoing work that we do here. Without their input the Centre would be a much poorer place and we are very very grateful to everyone who helps out, ranging from escorng the drivers on our minibuses through to helping feed the clients in the lounge and at lunchme. To one and all thank you for your sterling efforts. If you would like to do some voluntary work at the Centre, please contact my colleague Kaa Krewinkel, who will be more than happy to have a chat with you about what opportunies are on offer, as well as provide you with an applicaon form; she can be contacted on 0208 908 1220 or by emailing office@sudburyneighbourhoodcentre. co.uk. We are thinking about how we can improve the way we use the Centre to provide more space for group work and community use of the premises. Last year we commissioned an architect to draw up a feasibility study into the re-ordering of the internal layout in the building, to provide dedicated art and computer classrooms, space for social groups, hairdressing, daycare as well as a clinic. The designs provide the ability to run simultaneous classes and events in the Centre, which will benefit the wider community, as well as our own day care clients. I love the change from Winter to Spring, with the appearance of lighter warmer evenings (and mornings) as well as the promise of new life, that comes with the burst of energy that the sun brings to our little world.

We have another three months of exciting things for you to see, and do, at the Centre in this edition and I sincerely hope that you can visit us and make the most of the various opportunities featured on our diary page and in our weekly programme. We have all the usual things on offer this Spring ranging from art classes through to exercise groups, so why not brush off those cobwebs and come on down. One thing to mention is that we have now recruited two part time ICT tutors to provide professional tuition on the days we run the classes in the Centre, which should hopefully provide consistency and the level of support our users require. Please call the Centre for more details about how to book.

As many of you know, we have a happy band of volunteers at the Centre, who generously give their time to support the ongoing work that we do here.

Without their input the Centre would be a much poorer place and we are very very grateful to everyone who helps out, ranging from escorting the drivers on our minibuses through to helping feed the clients in the lounge and at lunchtime. To one and all thank you for your sterling efforts.

If you would like to do some voluntary work at the Centre, please contact my colleague Katia Krewinkel, who will be more than happy to have a chat with you about what opportunities are on offer, as well as provide you with an application form; she can be contacted on 0208 908 1220 or by emailing [email protected].

It’s been a while since we published this little column … A warm welcome to our new clients: Firdaus Khan, Norma Baker, Fred Disley, Eva Campbell, Shashikant Shah, Hayriye Kaya, Desmond Knight and Leonard Silverman. We wish them all a very happy stay here at the Centre!

The Centre has Keep Fit classes every Tuesday at 11 a.m. with our lovely instructor Audrey. Also, Tai Chi lessons on Mondays and Fridays at 11:15 with Asher. Only £5 per activity! The Computer classes are back for another 10 weeks course either on Tuesday or Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at only £40 for the whole course.

The Centre will be starting a 10 weeks programme of fall prevention on Tuesdays at 1:45 p.m., from 28th February. Please talk to Anita if you are interested in taking part. Unfortunately, we have to report the death of Jashwaniben Khatri who passed away at the beginning of February. She was much loved by everyone here at the Centre. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this very sad time. We also report the deaths of Harry D’Vaz and Marjorie Figgess, former clients of the Centre, who both passed away recently.

It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. John 13v1

Easter is here again and we come to ponder those momentous events surrounding the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus. As I began to think about what to share with you, my mind went back to last Easter. I was making my way down to the church, getting ready to say a few words at our Maundy Thursday service. An email alert buzzed on my phone. I opened it up to find a message from the man who had been my pastor when I first started attending church as a young man. He had had a major influence on my life and over the years we had kept in touch.

In his message he explained that he had inoperable cancer and it would appear that he didn’t have much time left on earth. It was shocking news and I was left reeling. Ten minutes later the service began and I stumbled through it, barely being able to take it in. The next day I joined people from the other churches of Sudbury on the Good Friday Walk of Witness. As we followed the cross I found myself welling up at the prospect of my dear friend’s death.

Looking back at last Easter, I can now see that I really experienced something of what those early disciples must have felt. They were losing someone who was so dear to them. They were losing their shepherd, their mentor, their leader. They couldn’t really take it in. They didn’t want him to go.

Yet Jesus said that it was better for them if he did go! He had told them before, on a number of occasions, that he was leaving but it just didn’t make any sense to them. When Jesus died their hopes and dreams were crushed. It must have seemed as if their world had been turned upside down. Grief can do that to us. It can overwhelm us. It can engulf us.

But of course the message of Easter is that death is not the end of the story. This Jesus who was crucified, died and was buried didn’t stay dead. When the disciples went to the tomb they found it was empty. At first they wondered where his body was but then reports began to filter back that he was alive. It seemed too good to be true and yet it was true. In the end more than 500 people saw the resurrected Jesus. Our faith is not based on the testimony of a few but many. Good news indeed!

And the good news doesn’t stop there. The Bible tells us that whoever believes in Jesus will share in his resurrection. We should not fear death because it has been defeated! My friend passed away a few months after I received that email. Again I felt terribly sad but I know that one day I will see him again. This is the hope that we have as Christians. It’s hard losing loved ones. Let’s not pretend that it isn’t. But in our grief let’s always remember Easter. Jesus is risen. I hope that you can respond with conviction, ‘He is risen indeed’.

May God bless you this Easter

Resurrection HopeAn Easter Message:

We all stumble or trip sometimes. But fear of falling can start to become a serious worry and can be quite difficult to deal with if not addressed quickly.

The anxiety may stem from having had a fall already, but it can prey on your mind, even if you haven’t fallen before. This sometimes happens after a period of illness which can leave you feeling weak and a bit unsure of yourself. Consequently, you may become more cautious, limit

what you’re willing to do, and lose confidence in carrying out daily tasks and activities. You may even stop wanting to go out on your own. Worrying in this way isn’t unusual, but it can make you anxious, isolated or depressed.

Fears about losing your independence can also make you reluctant to seek help.perhaps you’re worried that people will think you’re unable to look after yourself properly, or that they’ll suggest you move into a care home.

It’s important not to let such thoughts stop you from taking positive steps to get help. A good falls prevention service will enable you to live as independent and enjoyable a life as possible. This is the case whether you’ve had a fall already or are concerned about falling and want to know more about how to prevent it.

Talk to your GP. With their help, or the help of your local falls prevention service, you can work out how to get your confidence back, improve your balance and strength and reduce your risk of falling.”

On Sunday 19th February, a group of people from Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre attended the Lions Annual Senior Citizens Celebrations, which was held at Harrow Leisure Centre.

We were collected and escorted to and from our homes by staff from the Centre. The event was attended by near 1000 senior citizens from various organisations. I have never seen so many minibuses in one place at the same time!

There was non stop ongoing entertainment from start to finish, 2 to 5 p.m. The golden oldies musical entertainers were good for nostalgia, but the bolywood dancers scored

top marks for their inclusiveness with the crowd which surrounded the stage. Their dancers included songs and movements from our exercise class on Tuesdays at the Centre. We were fed, watered and had our needs met by the staff. Our day ended with raffles and bingo.

A big thank you to all the staff and volunteers who gave up their day off to be with us. The driver of the bus was very helpful in steering us back to the van through the huge crowd. A special thank you to our manager Anita who worked tirelessly to see everyone who attends the Centre was cared for while we are at the Centre and also on Sunday. Thanks also to her husband, what a lovely family!

My name is Luke Flannigan, I am currently in my final year studying

Occupational Therapy at Brunel University and I have just finished my final 8 week placement at Sudbury Neighbourhood Centre.

Occupational Therapy provides practical support to enable people to facilitate recovery and overcome any barriers that prevent them from doing the activities that matter to them. This helps to increase people’s independence and satisfaction in all aspects of life. We as Occupational Therapists are therefore equipped to work with all the clients who attend the day centre no matter what health condition they have. I have specifically been working with the care team to ensure that all clients have an enriched time at the centre making sure activities on offer are inclusive for all clients whether they require a lot of support or not.

Having dementia can make communicating one’s needs to others difficult and it can mean an increased reliance on others. Therefore, it is important that these clients are given opportunities adapted to their own wants and needs so that they can be independent whilst still enjoying their life.

There are plans in place for Occupational Therapy students to have placements at this centre in the future. This will ensure that the work I have been doing over the past 2 months will not only be carried on by the care team but will be enhanced each time a new student arrives at the centre.

Being a Community Event Organiser for the Sudbury Neighbourhood

Centre has been such a wonderful rewarding experience in the short time I have been here. I wanted a job that would really challenge me, be very social, get me out and about, with the hope of still being able to use my 20+ years’ experience in the marketing & PR field. Well I must say so far it has been more than I would have hoped!

Since I started in November, I have spent my time networking to raise awareness of the centre. I have met with the community champions in Asda and Tesco generating opportunities for fundraising. So volunteers please get the collection buckets on the ready we have a busy time over the Easter period, but if there is anyone who can give a few hours of their time to help me with any upcoming events or collections please contact me, I would appreciate your assistance.

I have also been busy making links with local businesses and schools for their support in the upcoming events for the year. It is a very exciting time and I am full of ideas and enthusiasm to raise funds. Two events to look out for

Garden Fete on the 1st July. So please contact me for more information on 0208 908 1220 or email [email protected] Also, keep an eye out for the next issue of the newsletter, which will list more events that are not to be missed!

It is a challenging role but so rewarding, which gives me the incentive to keep pushing to make positive things happen for the team and our clients. I could not think of a better group of people to be working with.

I think part of being a successful event organiser is making sure that you never lose your drive and passion and that determination to organise events and come up with exciting fundraising ideas in order to raise money. This job is perfect and I cannot imagine myself doing anything else!

Thank you to Tom Stanley, from L.N.E.R Sports and Social Club in Wembley for donating £425 and Girish Shah from My controller, Accounting & Tax Service for Business who donated £100 towards our minibus appeal.
