Welcome!Welcome to the twenty-second annual Placitas Studio Tour where over sixty artists will open their studio doors and share with you the fascinating spaces where the artwork is created.
This free, self-guided, self-driven tour has become a tradition over Mother’s Day weekend and is one of New Mexico’s most popular studio tours. In addition to the established artists of Placitas, you will discover many new and exciting artists as well.
Creations in painting, glass, fiber, ceramics, jewelry, steel, collage, metal, sculpture, mixed media, pottery, wood, photography, bronze, and more are a part of this behind-the-scenes peek at our growing artistic community.
Visit our website to preview the artists and plan your tour through Placitas. At every turn, beautiful vistas and fascinating studios await you.
Brochures will be available at all studio locations and at the Homestead Village Gazebo just two miles east on Hwy 165.
ABOUT OUR COVER ART The painting on the cover titled, It Was a Very Good Year, was painted by Meg Leonard in the fall of
2005. While visiting the Anasazi Winery one afternoon, a brilliant golden poplar tree set against the
foothills caught her eye. Jim Fish, the winery owner, graciously gave her permission to set up her
easel and paint the pastel plein air. Jim was so taken with the completed piece that he asked if Meg
would consider trading the painting for one of his sculptures, to which she agreed. He mentioned
that it had been a very good year for his wine, and the title of the painting was born.
The painting hung in the winery until Jim’s death. Meg was pleased that her painting was selected
for the cover and that she could share her memory of the late Jim Fish, a great supporter of the arts.
Jim Fish’s collection of sculpture will be included for purchase at Meg’s studio #35 before it moves
permanently to Marfa, TX.
We hope to make 2019 a very good year for the Placitas Studio Tour, the artists, and the art lovers who
tour our community.

For over 20 years, the Placitas Studio Tour has brought art lovers and artists together. A few months ago, the Placitas Studio Tour Board decided to make a donation to nurture future artists in our community on behalf of all the artists who have participated in the Studio Tour for past years.Board Member, Mary Hofmann, met with Placitas Elementary School art teacher, Patti Jordan-Bell, to see what equipment and or items were needed for the students. After reviewing her wish list, the Placitas Studio Tour Board voted to donate a clay slab roller, racks to dry the children’s art work and a monetary donation for a grand total of $2,000 donated to the Placitas Elementary School Arts Department. New Mexico Clay assisted in acquiring the clay slab roller for the school. Without their generosity, the gift would not have been possible. Many Placitas artists did not start out as artists but were introduced to the arts through community classes or an art teacher. Placitas Studio Tour Board Member, Dorothy Bunny Bowen, recalls an event in 1980 when an artist-in-the-schools offered a free week-long workshop to the community. There, in the school gym, Bunny was introduced to batik, which has been her medium of choice as an artist for the past 38 years! Bunny concluded, “We never know what seeds we plant when we help to provide art education to our children and community.”
