What is Emotional Intelligence?

1) Your performance at work2) Your physical health3) Your mental health4) Your relationships5) Organizations are increasingly using EI to hire and promote

Why is EI important?

• The ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others.

• Not afraid of your emotional “mistakes.” They tell you what you should be doing differently.

• Self-awareness includes staying on top of your typical reactions to specific events, challenges, and people.

• A high degree of self-awareness requires a willingness to tolerate the discomfort of focusing on feelings that may be negative.

• Can you walk into a room, meet a stranger, and quickly sense that something is not as it seems?

Admission Consideration for Native Students Applying to Majors with Major Specific Criteria Students interested in pursuing majors with major specific criteria must meet the

specified criteria in order to ‘declare the major.' Qualified freshmen will begin as pre-majors and then declare the major when they complete the major specific criteria. Pre-majors will be expected to meet these major specific criteria.

Major specific criteria provide a clear path to entrance to the major as well as degree completion.

Criteria also serve as an early alert for students who may need to explore other major options.

Except for Nursing, native Cal State LA students may ‘declare a major’ if they meet the major specific minimum cumulative GPA and required lower division preparation and are on-track for timely graduation (current policy requires completion within 120% of degree units – 144 for 120 unit degrees).

Page 20: Welcome! [] A… · • Goleman, D. (1996). Emotional Intelligence. Why It Can Matter More than IQ. Learning, 24 (6), 49-50. • Salovey, P., & Mayer, J. D. (1990). Emotional intelligence.

Steps for Pre-majors to Declare the Major

Pre-majors may declare their major after they satisfy the Major Specific Declaration Requirements. You can check your progress towards satisfying the pre-major requirements by reviewing your Academic Requirements Report available in the ‘Academics Section’ of the GET Student Center.

Be aware that if you are considering Nursing, additional requirements will apply and admission to the major is very competitive. Once you have satisfied the specified criteria, meet with an advisor from your College Advising and Student Success Center to begin the process of declaring your major. If the advisor supports your request, the advisor will electronically submit your request to Enrollment Services.

Pre-majors must pursue the coursework necessary to be able to declare the major by the time they reach 60 units. Students who are not on-track for admission to the major will be required to meet with an advisor and may need to pursue alternate major options.

Page 23: Welcome! [] A… · • Goleman, D. (1996). Emotional Intelligence. Why It Can Matter More than IQ. Learning, 24 (6), 49-50. • Salovey, P., & Mayer, J. D. (1990). Emotional intelligence.

Changing your Major or Declaring a Second MajorStudents may change their major or add a second major if they will be able to complete their baccalaureate degree in no more than 120% (144 units for a standard 120-unit program) of the units required by their primary degree program, including a second major or any minors. Undergraduates may declare up to (a) two majors without a minor (b) one major and two minors.

If you are considering changing your major or declaring a second major, be aware that you must meet any major-specific criteria in the new major. To determine whether your desired major has major specific criteria, see the list of Major Specific Declaration Requirements. You can check how your academic course work applies to the proposed new major’s admission requirements or degree requirements by creating a ‘What-if Report’ available in the ‘Academics Section’ of the GET Student Center. If you want to see your progress towards meeting the admission requirements, select the ‘pre-major’ code under the Area of Study drop down, such as “Pre-Criminal Justice.” If you want to see all of the degree requirements for the major, select the actual major in the Area of Study drop down such as “Criminal Justice.”

Once you have satisfied the specified criteria, meet an advisor from the College Advising and Student Success Center to explore the possibility of changing your major. If the advisor supports your request, the advisor will electronically submit your request to Enrollment Services. Be aware that additional information may be requested to insure compliance with the policies mentioned above prior to the processing of the request

Lots of questions arise!! How will students know what the criteria are? How will they know if they are on-track for completion? How can they plan their degree? How can we be proactive in assisting them?

Lets explore how we can utilize our e-advising tools:

Degree Audit

Degree Audit Key Purpose: What do I need to get into the major?

Standard degree and GE requirements

Major section includes only the major specific requirements for admission minimum GPA native student version of course requirements with a C or Better Verification that the GE core (magic 4) are completed

If Major section is ‘green/complete’ then student can be admitted to the major. As a result, we can explore automating these changes in the future and nudging students who have not completed the requirements.

A ‘what-if’ audit on the Pre-major can be used by advisors and students for student in Undeclared or others majors considering changing majors to see whether they meet the admission requirements.

Pre-major admission criteria do not have ‘catalog years.’ The current criteria will be used for major changes through Spring 19. Any changes submitted and approved this spring become effective for the Fall 19 transfer admission cycle. Native student who have not met the current criteria by the end of Spring 19 will need to meet any new criteria as well.

Degree Planner Key Purpose: What else should I take as a pre-major? What will I need to take after I get into the major?

The ‘major roadmap’ and degree planner coding are used as the basis for the Pre-major version of the plan

A note about ‘pre-major’ status appears at the top of the planner

Major specific criteria courses are flagged as ‘critical’ and a visible note is added “Major Declaration Requirement Course”

A semester note is added normally on the 5th semester “Declaration of the Major should be completed”

Major requirements normally in terms 6 or later on the roadmap will display [Declaration to Major Required] will display at the beginning of the description and students will not be able to select or move these requirements while in ‘pre-major’ status.

EAB Key purpose: Is the student on-track to get into the major?

The minimum GPA and required major courses for admission to the major will be set as success markers allowing advisors to pro-actively track registration and completion.

Success markers can be reviewed on an individual student bases are used as part of an advanced search.

Pre-major Academic Requirements Reports (CAAR) Currently available for ‘what-if’ reports except Pre-Nursing Freshmen who submit their intent to enroll to these majors will be able to run the

CAAR once they are matriculated (late May)

Degree Planner Current ‘live’ majors will have their ‘pre-major’ version go-live in our next wave

(mid-May) Pre-major versions will be built for other majors once the college has signed off on

testing the major. Next group of new majors will go-live Mid-May.

Current Students in “undeclared with an interest in xxx’ majors We will change these students to the appropriate new Pre-major code in mid-May so

they can utilize the CAAR and Degree Planner (if available for that major).

• Gathers additional information prior to meeting, if available.

• Works collaboratively to develop an appropriate response which often involves a member(s) of the CARE team reaching out to the student.

• Attempts to resolve at the lowest level by providing the reporting party with guidance and resources to first follow up with the student directly.
