St. Matthew’s Labyrinth in Lent

The St. Matthew's labyrinth is in the sanctuary during Lent until Good Friday, March 25.

ALL groups and individuals are invited and encouraged to visit and experience the refreshing moments of solitude that the labyrinth can bring to your day. You may gain access to the labyrinth during the week by picking up a key in the church office during business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

The labyrinth path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. That means that each time you walk the labyrinth, you experience and learn something different.

If you walk it with an open mind and open heart, it will touch your sorrows and release your joys! “Holy and Gracious God... fountain of all wisdom, be ever present to those who walk the labyrinth seeking your guidance, that they may here be enlightened and strengthened for their journey, and grown in knowledge and love of you, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.” AMEN Submitted by Judy Neely

Help us with Easter Lilies to Welcome the Risen Lord

As you may have noticed, Lent is a time when there are no flowers on the altar or in the Commons, as we use this meditative time for reflection and renewal. On Easter Sunday, though, we’ll welcome the Risen Lord with an abundance of flowers and lilies all around the sanctuary!

You can help the Flower Guild provide those flowers by contributing a donation in the envelopes provided in the chairs of the sanctuary or by just making an annotation of “Easter Flowers” on the memo line of your check. Please join us in making our church a beautiful place to celebrate Easter! We will honor all those who donated by listing names in the Easter Sunday Order of Service. Submitted by Joyce Statz

The St. Matthew’s Broadcasting System (Electronic Notifications)

The clergy and staff are looking for more ways to effectively communicate St. Matthew’s lively community life to the parish. We are hoping especially to increase readership of the electronic version of the Weekly Word, distributed via email, as well as other parish news updates (Letters from the Rector, Grief in the Parish, for example) that go out. To that end, we have updated MailChimp (the email distribution program we use) with email addresses that we have stored in our membership database, which members have provided to us.

If you need to update your email address, please send it to both Mickie ([email protected]), who updates the membership database, and Christine ([email protected]), who updates MailChimp. If you decide you do not which to receive St. Matthew’s electronic notifications, there is an Unsubscribe feature at the bottom of each email, but we hope you’ll stay. Submitted by Christine Havens

Prayer and Share

It is a ministry of praying, reflecting, and sharing—this is a simple description of what happens every Saturday from 9:00 - 10:30 am in the Wilson Room (B-14). In this confidential environment, we gather and we pray for Christ's Church and for the World, and for "all sorts and conditions." We may share something of our lives, as a request for prayer. We always say, "The door is closed," meaning nothing that is shared in the room is discussed outside the room. Afterward, those who wish may adjourn for breakfast across the street.

Anyone is welcome to attend, to request prayer at any time, or perhaps to participate with us in reflecting and sharing every time. If you would like to know more, contact Sandy Lanier or Bob Ascot, or email me at [email protected]. PAX, Fr. Jim Williams+

Just one thing …

We are so grateful to everyone who brings food for the Caritas Food Pantry on Sundays. If we, the 200 households who attend services each week, each brought just one item, we could con-tribute more than 10,000 pounds of food to those in the Austin area who are hungry, which is our goal for 2016.

At the moment, there is a particular need for: canned ham, mixed vegetables, pasta sauce in cans or plastic containers, pasta, canned fruit, hamburger helper-type meals, and cold cereals. Please be sure that all donated food items are not past their expiration date as they have to be thrown away.

Caritas could also use some heavy duty reusable grocery bags if you or your company have extra supplies.

Caritas collection baskets can be found in the Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute, you are welcome to place a $1.00 donation in the Caritas money box, near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons, the proceeds from which will be used to purchase food. Thank you. Submitted by: Jane Baxter Lynn

Do You Have a Dream for St. Matthew’s?

Do you have an idea for using your time and talent to make a dream come true for St. Matthews? An idea that brings our mission to share God’s love to life in some way? An idea that perhaps is new and untested but worthy of development? Or one identified by our Salt and Light Strategic Plan that remains unfulfilled?

If so, please consider requesting a grant from the Permanent Endowment Fund! The Endowment Fund consists of dona-tions—often memorial gifts and gifts made by members to St. Matthew’s in their wills—that form a corpus or principal which has been invested and grown in value over time. The fruits of the fund are intended for a variety of uses that are not part of our annual budget, such as developing new programs and offerings for the church, as well as seeding new ways to serve the community outside of St. Matthew’s.

The grant process is simple.

Identify and define your proposal and request. In 2016, $21,000 is available to be disbursed for grants through this process.

Fill out the grant application form. This can be found online at the following URL: http://www.stmattsaustin.org/About/endowment-fund.html

Submit the application to the Endowment Committee at any time.

The Endowment Committee meets every other month, and reviews grant applications on a rolling basis. It will meet next on March 21, then again on May 23rd. The Endowment Committee will make a recommendation on the application, and forward the application with the recommendation to the Vestry for approval at the Vestry’s next meeting. Disbursements are made promptly after Vestry approval.

The work that the Endowment Fund has allowed is visible in our parish everyday. A recent grant funded the new initiative, Forming Families, which has been very successful and added a rich new dimension to our Family Ministry. What will the Endowment Fund do next for our church and for our mission to spread God’s love? We can’t wait to find out! Consider a grant request today. Early Communion Training Family Ministry will be hosting an Early Communion Training on Sunday, March 13, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm in B-21. This will be an introductory class for children to discover the many aspects of communion. All baptized children are welcome at the communion rail at St. Matthew’s, no matter what their age. The parent decides when a child is ready to begin to receive communion. A child can certainly participate in communion without being a graduate of the Communion Class; however, there comes a time when a child is ready for more “formal” communion instruction. Participating in this class will help your child learn the meaning of Communion. All are welcome at the altar. Your child has the opportunity to discover answers for his or her Eucharistic questions. If your child is between the ages of 5 and 12, has been baptized, not yet attended a Communion Class and is asking questions about what it means, please attend the next Early Communion Training. Please contact Susan Goodman for more information or to register your child. Lunch will be served at the training for the children.
