SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT - March 8, 2020 Dear Parish Family: During this penitential season we make a conscious effort to avoid sin and be faith- ful to the gospel. In last Sunday’s Gospel Jesus journeyed into the desert and was tempted by the devil. Today Jesus climbs a high mountain on which he transfigured in front of his closest disciples. Whether isolated in the wilderness or accompanied by friends on a mountaintop, Jesus remains faithful to the will of God. May he be a model for us. The Parish Community of St. john Vianney & St. Thomas the Apostle

SPRITUAL LIFE MINISTRY:

• 40 DAYS OF GIVING: During Lent we are called to participate in the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiv-

ing. One way to help others in this way is to participate in 40 Days of Giving. Each day during Lent, put aside one non

-perishable food or paper item to donate to the Hope House Food Pantry to help feed the poor. On Sunday when

you go to Mass, bring your week’s donations and place them in the box for the food pantry. By bringing your dona-

tions weekly, two problems are eliminated. You are not trying to carry 40 donated items to Mass with you on Easter

Sunday and the parish is not trying to store all those food items on Easter. The donations will be taken to the food

pantries on a weekly basis.

• FEED THE WORKING POOR—Next Saturday, March 14 between 9:00AM and 9:30AM, is the drop off time for trays of meal for 4 to help those who work but still don’t have enough money for food . If you don’t have time to make a meal frozen meals are gladly taken (example: Stouffer’s Vegetable Lasagna Family Meal) or cash donations.

• FLOCKNOTE LENTEN FACTS AND REFLECTIONS: We are offering for Lent a daily text program about Lent - quick facts

about why we don't eat meat on Fridays, quotes from the saints and other items, If a person doesn't have or doesn’t

want to use a cell phone, they can receive it as a brief email. All you need to do to sign up is text STASJV to 84576,

and make sure you join "Enrichment"!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: We now have pocket prayer squares available in addition to prayer shawls. if you would like a pocket prayer square which has been blessed, feel free to take one for yourself or someone else. They are located in a basket in the vestibule of the church. There is a signup sheet next to the basket if you would like to list the name of the person receiving the pocket prayer square, and we will add the name to our prayer list. Anyone requesting a prayer shawl should fill out a form in the lobby of STA/SJV and leave the completed form in the basket. We will contact you with a time to pick up your shawl. For imme-diate need, please call Gabby Dyl at 973-713-0280. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets at STA at 7:30 pm the first Thursday of the month NEW MEMEBERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME, even if you don’t know how to knit or crochet. Next meeting: April 1.
