Chatting up Sharon IsbinLAURIE K. SCHENDEN

Dawdling around the bar, speculating about what I could be drinking if I

werent on the job, I notice a woman across the room who seems out of

place. Attractive and sophisticated, she has an air about her that

somehow sets her apart from the Hollywood movers and schmoozers

    networking around her.

My keen investigator eye tells me that shes either shy or doesnt know

anyone. Since Im drawn to strong silent types, and killing time while

waiting for the ceremony portion of the ninth annual Power Premiere to begin, I approach.

Shes musician Sharon Isbin, a Grammy-winning classical guitarist set to perform at the White House just a few

days later and then with Orange Countys elite Pacific Symphony this month.

I ask, "Girl, what the hell are you doing here?" OK, not exactly in those words, but it turns out she was one of the

evenings honorees, an out lesbian named one of Power Ups 10 Most Amazing Gay Women/Men in Showbiz for

2009. Luckily shes a good sport as well. She came all the way from New York to accept the honor, and no, she

doesnt know anyone in the room.

Ive been aware of Power Up for a long time, she says. [Showtimes] Gwen Marcus is a good friend, she was a

recipient in the past. Shes a real dynamo in the New York scene.

Because my knowledge of classical music is shaky (I know that the Pacific Symphony plays in a shiny new, world-

class performing arts venue and I attend Hollywood Bowl on Movie Music nights), I steer the conversation to

familiar ground. Music does, after all, play a major role in setting the right tone on screens big and small.

Every once in awhile my world intersects the film world, and its been really fun when it has, she says. The first

time I was asked to be a guest star on The L Wordplaying myself the second season. And the next time I was the

soloist in the score soundtrack of Martin Scorceses film The Departed.

Geez, not just any film, a Scorcese picture. And this was an intense, critically acclaimed movie starring Leonardo

DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson that won Academy Awards for best picture, director, editor and adapted

    screenplay in 2007.

Do you remember the scene, Billys therapy session? she asks. Theres a long solo guitar accompanied by

    string orchestra; thats me.

Whats fascinating is the music really fleshes out a part of his character you dont see in images, the music is very

sensuous, ethereal, and the music shows his sensitive side.

Howard Shore, the composer, selected Isbin to perform the solo for what became an Oscar-nominated score. I

stuck around to hear her sensuous strumming later in the evening. No doubt, she has a rare talent. The way her

fingers fly over the strings is mesmerizing, and a fete my sausage-link phalanges could never hope to emulate.

I wonderaloud of courseif being out among the conservative elite that tend to crowd the concert halls here has

    ever presented a problem.

It didnt have any impact on what I do, she says, assuredly. Its like nobody really cares, its such a boring old

story in the music world. Its just not interesting. In the theater world and in Hollywood, it still just sends shivers

down peoples spines, the thought of having to be out. But in my world, its just not interesting, which is good.

Yes, that is good. Shes a talented woman whos respected for her professional accomplishments, and thats what

    should matter. (sharonisbin.com)

Music for the Holidays - Some knowledgeable ears share

    their eclectic picks

By Ken Keuffel, Winston-Salem Journal, N.C.

Dec. 13--David Pegg, the director of music and the arts

at Centenary United Methodist Church on Fifth Street,

calls himself a "choral person." But when asked to

recommend a recording that might find its way under

your Christmas tree or that of a friend, music for

choruses was not on his mind.

Instead, he suggested At Home With Friends (Sony

Classics), a CD featuring classical violinist Joshua Bell.

"The variety of styles and 'friends,' the creative

arrangements, and the overall mood set by the music

will make this CD the perfect holiday gift," Pegg said. "I

have already given it to friends who agree that it's one of the best recently released (CDs). One cannot

    stop listening to it!"

Friends landed on my desk recently, and I share Pegg's enthusiasm about it. The CD is reported to have

found its inspiration in musical soirees at Bell's Manhattan home at which musicians, actors, comics and

writers share their art. The accent is on eclecticism: Bell performs everything from classics of the Great

American Songbook to a piece for violin and sitar, teaming up with different artists during each track.

Bell's friends on the recording include two musicians who will perform with the Winston-Salem Symphony

this spring: mandolin player Chris Thile (March 13, 14 and 16) and jazz trumpeter Chris Botti (April 10).

Also featured are vocalists Kristin Chenoweth ("My Funny Valentine") and Josh Groban ("Cinema

    Paradiso").

I was most taken with Variant Moods, for violin and sitar (Anoushka Shankar), with Bell and his partner

either locked in fast-and-furious unison lines or trading the most engaging of witticisms. The effect ismesmerizing -- and amounts to the most potent example of cross-cultural artistry I've encountered in

    some time.

Bell seems right at home in every style, embellishing longish melodic lines with flair and taste. And his

friends always deliver in friendly fashion. For those who want a reminder of the season, Bell and Botti go

out with a brief-but-swinging account of "White Christmas," the bonus track of a special edition of Friends.

Pegg's recommendation was one of several made by knowledgeable music people for this article. Here are

    some others:

--Composer Shelley Olson called to tell me that her A Chanukah Cantata will receive its 10th-anniversary

concert at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in Davis Chapel at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The

performers will include Olson (singing mezzo-soprano), soprano Amy Anderson and baritone Jason

McKinney. Ray Ebert will play the piano.

So this holiday season would be as good a time any to add a Maju Music recording of Chanukah Cantata to

your personal collection. (Order it at www.maju.com.)

A Chanukah Cantata has been performed all over, from the White House to Joel Coliseum.

Olson said that each of the cantata's eight central songs "brings a unique message of hope," with the

work's central message being "the prayer for peace in Jerusalem and in the world."

--Matthew Troy is the Winston-Salem Symphony's assistant conductor and education director. He

recommended a CD he described as "kind of obscure but good," namely Dixit (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi).

This recording features Thomas Hengelbrock leading the Balthasar-Neumann Orchestra and Chorus in

Handel's Dixit Dominus and Caldara's Missa Dolorosa. Troy described "an energetic recording featuring

authentic Baroque instruments, which is very refreshing."

--Matt Kendrick, a fine double-bass player of jazz, will be listening to at least one recording during the

holiday season. This is Jingle Bell Jazz (Sony), which features such jazz greats as Miles Davis; Duke

Ellington; Dexter Gordon, Herbie Hancock and Dave Brubeck.

"It is one swinging Christmas recording," Kendrick said by e-mail. "I enjoy it every year."

--Stewart Carter, who is the chairman of the music department at Wake Forest University, suggested

placing an Erato recording of Charpentier's music under the tree. This features William Christie leading Les

    duo of all time.

career in this numbered, limitededition boxed set. And just shy of a retail price of $800, this deluxe set is the

TV shows, including "The Donna Reed Show " and "That Girl. " Digital camp made easy.

    By GEORGE PELLETIER Correspondent

This season's new batch of holiday CDs take a less conventional approach in spreading their good tidings.

One of the most anticipated discs, thanks in part to an appearance on PBS, is Straight No Chaser's, "Christmas

Cheers " (AtlanticRecords). Founded by a group of college friends at Indiana University, Straight No Chaser

is just that " a 10man a cappella group that adds a little slap and tickle to some otherwise ordinary Christmas

standards. But make no mistake: These guys are serious about their craft.

Backed only by their resounding voices and harmonies, the highlight of thealbum is their version of "The 12

Days of Christmas, " which catapulted them into cyberspace, thanks to more than 8 million hits on YouTube.

Their adaptation, which jumbles other songs into it, such as "Carol of the Bells " and "I Have a Little Dreidel,

" which finally morphs into Toto's "Africa. " The result is a viral smash and one of the funniest Christmas

    ditties you'll hear all season.

"Originally, we had rehearsed the ending of that song and didn't like it, " said member Randy Stine. "And our

cover version of 'Africa' was popular on our college campus, so I jokingly suggested that we put 'Africa' at the

end. Dan Ponce (another member of the group) sat down at the piano, and we had it. "

Stine acknowledged the popularity of the version and added, "We hope that people notice new things each

    time they hear it. "

Other songs on their new CD include the original "Christmas CanCan " and "Hey Santa. "

"A cappella is fun for us, " said Stine. "And people might not expect much, and then there is that element of

surprise and the audience's reaction of, 'I didn't know you guys did this song.' "

Now in the middle of a 50citytour, the boys have quit their day jobs. "We kind of had to, " laughed Stine.

Toronto native and singer Mark Masri presents "Christmas Is | " (Green Hill). The album includes classics

such as "Ave Maria " and "Silent Night " and features guest performances by Jim Brickman and Olivia

    Newton John.

In terms of creating thealbum, Masri has a difficult time choosing a favorite between writing, performing,

    playing or producing.

"That's a really good question, " he said. "But I guess I would say my preference is performing and playing,

which go hand in hand, even though I've produced a lot of my ownrecords. "

Masri continues toperform throughout December on Jim Brickman's "Beautiful World "tour and said he has

his own favorite songs on his new disc. "For me, even though I wrote some of them, it would be 'O Holy

Night,' and 'On Christmas.' That one takes the cake for me. "

For those who haven't heard Masri's sound, he describes it as pop, though he clarified that by adding, "It's like

Bocelli meets Luther Vandross. I have all these influences that come through. "

And speaking of the gifted tenor, Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas " (Decca), produced by hit maker David

Foster, is Bocelli's first Christmasalbum. The disc features guests ranging from Natalie Cole ( "The

Christmas Song ") to the Muppets ( "Jingle Bells ") to Mary J. Blige ( "What Child Is This "). The latter

brought Oprah to tears. Bocelli commented, "We just had these two elements, our voices, and when we put

them together, that was just it. "

Deemed a winter solstice recording, as opposed to a holiday release, Sting returns with "If On A Winter's

Night | " (Deutche Grammaphone). Tracks include the stirring "Gabriel's Message " and "Christmas At Sea. "

Thealbum "takes traditional music from the British Isles " and celebrates "the many facets of winter. "

Following the nontraditional route is 7yearold piano virtuoso Emily Bear with "Once Upon A Wish, a

Holiday Collection and more | " (Emilybear.com). With appearances on "Ellen, " this nonprecocious childwho writes songs "in 10 minutes or so " is well on her way with original recordings such as "Christmas Bells "

    and the title track.

"Handel's Messiah Rocks " (Sony) is a modernized rock opera available on CD andDVD featuring the

Boston Pops, conducted by Keith Lockhart. The world's most famous oratorio brings Handel's Messiah to the

rock stage with the University Choir at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and the HMR Children's

    Choir.

Shifting genres, Barry Manilow is back with "In The Swing of Christmas " (Arista). Manilow doesn't miss a

beat as he gives his treatment on traditional and new hits ( "Christmas is Just Around the Corner ").

"American Idol " runnerup David Archuleta plays it safe with his "Christmas from the Heart " (Jive).

Sticking with traditional standards, Archuleta's soft vocals lift tracks such as "The First Noel " and "I'll Be

    Home For Christmas. "

Christmas just ain't Christmas with a little country kick. Country vocal Duo of the Year Sugarland wrap it up

with "Gold and Green " (Mercury), with original tracks ( "City of Silver Dreams ") and holiday faves ( "Holly

Jolly Christmas "). Meanwhile, there's an allstar country cast of crooners on "Now That's What I Call a

Country Christmas " (Sony Music). Highlights on the twodisc set: Kellie Pickler's "Santa Baby " and Taylor

Swift's "Christmases When You Were Mine " intermingle with standards by Gene Autry and Burl Ives.

No fireplace? No problem. Sony Legacy sparks the season with its "Christmas Classics: The Yule LogEdition. " Essentially, you pop theseDVDs in your players and watch scenes of burning Yule logs while you

listen toalbums by Sony artists such as Mariah Carey, Kenny Chesney, Johnny Cash, Celine Dion and Bette

Whenever I see Kristin Chenoweth on TV, I get excited.

She's so darn cute, this naughty mix of retro and modern.

She can do that rat-a-tat banter like in a Kate Hepburn

movie, but she's far more girly.

She's what makes "12 Men of Christmas" (Lifetime, 9

    tonight) worth watching.

In the film, she plays E.J. Baxter, a (stereo)typical NY go-

getter, a PR powerhouse, whose got the great tiny

apartment, the designer clothes and the perfect guy. But in New York, that trifecta can be fleeting; E.J.catches her heel of a fiance making out with her boss during the office holiday party. In retaliation, E.J.

breaks the heel off her boss' Gucci stilettos, ending the engagement and the job.

She can't get a new job so she takes what's available. That means leaving the Big Apple for a job in

Montana, helping small-town Kalispell lure corporate retreats. Captivated by the town's volunteer rescue

team which needs new equipment, E.J. sets out to put the town on the tourism map by producing a fund-

raising beefcake calendar of the rescue team.

Then there's the guy, Will (Josh Hopkins), allegedly the town's bad boy, whom she bumps heads with. Until

    she doesn't.

It's the usual Lifetime template and it's not all that Christmasy and it isn't amazing, but the movie has some

snappy lines and is a fun, light romp. Also, Kalispell is awful pretty; I know the movie made me want to visit.

And it has Kristin Chenoweth, in pencil skirts and heels, sailor outfits and tailored pantsuits, being funny and

sassy and someone it's easy to spend two hours with.

If you want to get in the Christmas spirit, take a listen to KC's new Christmas CD.
