owner Joey Gonzalez got a phone call. It was a lawyer for the mega-popular cycling

brand issuing a message: dont come back.

He essentially said we have a policy at SoulCycle where instructors at other group

fitness studios are not allowed to take class, Gonzalez says. He seemed half

embarrassed. We reached out to SoulCycles public relations team for comment on the

policy but did not hear back.

Gonzalez took to Facebook with the news, and his post went viral. (At time of this

writing, it had 158 comments and 14 shares.) Other popular fitness instructors, like

Natalie Uhling, Darryl Gaines, and Lindsey Clayton weighed in to say the same thing

had happened to them. Flywheel instructors jumped in to invite trainers from other

studios to come take their classes (#team), and tons of people weighed in to rail

against the lack of soul the policy stood for.

I spent the last five years of my career keeping all of these fitness wars quiet. Everyone

knows it goes on and everyone hates it, Gonzalez says, and I just had a moment and

said I think consumers deserve to know the way certain institutions treat their peers.

While many fitness brands happily invite other instructors into their classes and even

collaborate on events and promotions, the no instructors policy is not unique to

SoulCycle. In fact, paranoia about the stealing of trade secrets and instructor poaching

is widespread in the industry, and some studios even include clauses in their waivers

ensuring youre not an instructor who teaches elsewhere. Gonzalez says he has also been

banned from Equinox (which owns SoulCycle).

But it usually happens in the shadows, since the industry prides itself on selling

happiness-boosting endorphins and positive, life-changing motivation. Gonzalezs post

opened the floodgates of frustration. Clayton, who teaches at Bari, Barrys, and Cyc,

wrote, Since when is health and fitness supposed to separate people? Isnt it supposed

to bring people together? Or, like any competitive industry, is it about practices that

just serve the bottom line? Lisa Elaine Held

You Don't Set Up Your Bike ProperlyPuteh says that she constantly sees people in her classes making the samesetup mistakes. First, they ride with their seats far too low, which meansthat their legs end up very bent during the class. The better way: "Youshould set your seat up higher so that your legs are only slightly bent whenyou pedal," she says. "That way, you have much more control over yourride." Riders also tend to place the handlebars too low. "Handlebars shouldalways be a little higher than the seat, and about a full arm's length away,"says Puteh. For best results, ask an instructor to help you adjust your rideuntil you're comfortable doing it on your own.

You Lean Forward Too MuchThis is a biggie, especially for beginners. "When people get tired, they tendto lean forward because that's where gravity takes them," says Puteh. "Butleaning forward like that can really damage your knees." Her advice:Always be sure that 80 to 85 percent of your body weight is back over thesaddle. "You should always feel it between your legs," says Puteh.

MORE: How to Make Your Cycling Workout COUNT

You Don't Use Enough Resistance On HillsYou know when your cycling instructor tells you to put on more resistance? Most people don't actually do it. "A lot of people cheat," says Puteh. "WhenI say to turn up the resistance one full turn, they'll only turn it up a littlebit." (She knows because she sees them turning the knob just a smidgeand notices that they're pedaling way too fast.) The problem with that isthat you're not getting the most out of your time in the studio. So whenyour teacher tells you to do a full turn, really do it. "For hills, you want tofeel heavy underneath your feet, like you're pedaling through sand or tar,"says Puteh. "You want to feel uncomfortable." That's how you'll help buildup the muscles in your legs.

The first time I was in a yogaclass and the teacher hadus dedicate our practice tosomeone else who needed itmore than we did, it was life-changing for meit wastruly one of the mostpowerful classes I had everexperienced.

More recently, when I was atSoulCycle, the instructorsaid, If you feel like youcan't do it for yourself, do itfor someone else who needsthis more than you." Itbrought that feeling rightback, and all of a sudden, I

was capable of more than my head was allowing me to believe before hearing thatstatement.

Sometimes we need to do things for ourselves, but often the power of doing somethingwith the intention of helping the greater good, or just one other person, can be life-changing.

Fitness boutiques and studios around the country are picking up on that, and they areoffering classes that do more than just help you help yourselfthey take giving back toa whole other level. Check out these five.

    1. Cyc, a spinning studio with locations throughout the U.S., allows you to choose whichof their five chosen charities your efforts will go toward: Challenged Athletes Foundation,Sustainable Food Center, Marathon Kids, Boys & Girls Club of Dane County (inMadison, WI), or University of Wisconsin American Family Children's Hospital. Then forevery mile you bike, they donate money to your selected charity. They believe Whenyou ride at Cyc, you ride for change...Giving back never felt so good.

Gyms on Move in Manhatian BY KEIKO MORRIS

In the future, gyms and bou-tique fitness businesses in Man-hattan may be as convenient as the neighborhood coffee shop.

That day may not be far off. Last year, the number ofleases signed for gym and studio space in Manhattan more than doubled to 22 from the nine that closed the previous year, according to deals tracked by Cushman & Wakefield I\lc., a real-estate services firm.

Such spaces occupy increas-ingly important roles in the eco-system of the city's commercial real estate. Often ensconced on ground floors, gyms help lure people to buy or rent apart-ments upstairs, and they help landlords attract commercial tenants to office towers. And un-like other retailers, they can slide into second-floor or lower-level spots that landlords some-times struggle to fill.

The 2013 leases tallied by Cushman & Wakefield cover lux-ury chains such as Equinox Hold-ings Inc;, low-cost brands includ-ing Planet Fitness, and numerous 'indoor cycling cen-ters-from SoulCycle to Flywheel Sports. The locations stretched from the Financial District to Midtown and beyond.

SouiCycle's West .19th. Street location in Manhattan. Below, instructor Madison Lari leads a spinning class ; at the indoor-cycling facility. SouiCycle recently signed a deal for 6,000 square feet at li W. 27th St.

"It's all expanding from Chel-sea, Flatiron, Union Square and it mushrooms out," said Gregory Tannor, a director at Cushman & Wakefield, who has represented SoulCycle and other fitness chains on several Manhattan lease deals. "Some people ask me if it's a fad. I say, 'Is walking a fad?'"

Some neighborhoods have seen more new gyms than oth-ers, with notable growth in Mid-town South, where technology and media industries have mi-grated. The surge in residential buildings also has fueled the trend.

"There's been a tremendous amount of development in Chel-sea, and when there's new devel-opment, there's opportunity for space," said Scott Edlitz, a se-nior managing director at real-estate firm Colliers International broad categories-fitness and LLC, who has helped clubs find . sports centers, anCl sports and space. A year earlier, the Equinox, to take space on the city granted 24 such permits; in- ground and second floors of 31 eluding 15 in Manhattan, four in Penn Plaza. The gym is part of

Brooklyn and one in the Bronx. Savanna's overall efforts to The number of New York City transform the building since the establishments that fell into two firm acquired it in 2011.

"}laving an amenity in the building may form a part of a tenant's choice to lease office or other retail space at the build-ing, especially if health and well-being is an important part of its workforce's culture," said Kevin Hoo, vice president at Savanna. Also, "this type of amenity helps drive additional foot traffic for adjacent retailers who may also be looking to rent at the prop-erty." . Fitness operators are able to

take flexible approaches in neighborhoods where prices are high. Boutique studi6s specializ-ing in a specific regimen rely- on selling classes rather than mem-berships and often take smaller spaces of 3,000 to 9,000 square feet-much less than the 15,000 to 20,000 square feet required by a traditional gym. .

"Clearly, you can't compete in rent with a Starbucks or Coach," said Jeffrey Roseman, an execu-tive vice president at Newmark Grubb Knight Frank who has represented Blink in Manhattan.

Cyc Fitness, which has studios in Austin, Texas, and Madison, Wis., .found a way to cut costs even more. It opened a shop-

within-a-shop inside the Astor Place DavidBartonGym. "It cost us a quarter to a third of what it would have cost tp build out our own store," said Stephen Nitkin, founder and chief executive.

Planet Fitness Corp., another low-cost chain, has been extend-jng its reach to prime Manhattan retail lo.cations as well as the other boroughs. Last year, it opened in the Financial District, on West 55th Street between 9th and lOth avenues and in theCa-narsie arid Bedford-Stuyvesant sectionsof Brooklyn. This year's plans include sites at 14th Street and Union Square, the Sheraton TriBeCa and the East River Plaza in East Harlem.

"We try to target virgin mar-kets where there is a need for -

h~alth clubs that aren't there," said Gabrielle Lawlor, head of leasing for the greater New York Planet Fitness franchise.
