*** FORD RECALL *** The Ford Motor Co. is recalling over 128,000 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans over problems that could cause the wheels to separate. The recall includes 128,616 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milans, built from April 1 to April 30, 2009, and Dec 1, 2009 to Nov 13, 2010, with 17-inch steel wheels. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wheel stud fractures could occur while driving and the driver may experience vehicle vibration and wheel separation, increasing the risk of a crash. National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month 1 – 31 Dec: December is annually designated as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month (often referred

to as 3D Month). Every day, almost 30 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 48 minutes, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention . 3D Month reminds us to "Designate before we Celebrate" and encourages safe and sober driving. 2011 Combined Federal Campaign-Overseas Extended until 15 Dec: The 2011 CFC-Overseas program is the world’s largest charity campaign impacting the

lives of military personnel and Family members. CFC, the only authorized solicitation of federal employees in their workplaces, raises millions of dollars annually and features more than 2,300 charities. During last year’s campaign, U.S. Army in Europe Soldiers and civilian employees contributed approximately $2.4 million, with more than $97,000 designated for the family support and youth programs. CFC-O offers contributors the opportunity to give using the traditional paper pledge card or through e-giving at www.cfcoverseas.org.

Holiday mailing deadlines for U.S. Army Post Offices in Germany In order to ensure your Christmas Mail arrives on time in the states, you need to send it Express. All other deadlines have passed. The Express Mail deadline is Fri., Dec. 16. Both Main Post and Rose Barracks Postal Service Centers will be open on Saturday, Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for you to send out mail and pick up packages. On Saturday, Dec. 24, there will be an incoming mail truck. We will provide Operation Santa Claus services from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. which, will only have package pick up services offered. Gift Wrapping Table Now – 24 Dec: The American Red Cross is sponsoring gift wrapping tables at both the

Reduced Bus Services during the Holiday Season Scheduled bus services will be reduced on the following days: 24 Dec: Christmas Eve. All bus routes at Main Post and Rose Barracks will cease upon completion of the first run ending after 1 p.m. Route G-1 will end 3:14 p.m. Route G-2 will end 1:28 p.m. Route G-3 will end 2:07 p.m. Route G-4 will end 2:16 p.m. Route G-5 will end 2:52 p.m. Route G-6 will end 2:37 p.m. Route V-SAT will end 3:55 p.m. Route V-3 will end 3:36 p.m. 25 Dec: Christmas Day. Road conditions, staying safe on winter’s roads For up-to-date weather information, click on the following link. Additionally tune your radio to AM 1107, FM 98.5 for Main post Grafenwoehr, or FM 107.7 for Rose Barracks, also on Decoder channel 112; AFN Powernet Radio; AFN|Prime Atlantic television (Decoder channel 11); or visit AFN on the web at Bavaria.afneurope.net or facebook.com/AFNBavaria for the latest AFN updates; log onto http://www.grafenwoehr.army.mil and click on the ―Road Conditions― link provided on the left side of the page; tune TVs to the Command Information Channel and watch the weather crawler at the bottom of the screen.Call DSN 475-ROAD (7623) or CIV: 09641-83-7623 for the recorded ―road conditions and reporting instructions‖ Delay, Early Release and Closure: When conditions warrant, the Garrison Commander may direct a delayed reporting, early release, or garrison closure. Decision is based on a combination of road conditions and weather forecast. Garrison Commander’s decision applies to all personnel, tenant units, directorates and agencies to include DODDS schools. Delayed Reporting or Garrison Closure will normally be made at 4 a.m. The Installation Operations Center (IOC) will update the website, command channel and phone recordings NLT 4:30 a.m., and will alert AFN. AFN will broadcast updates starting at 5 a.m. Early release decision will be made two hours prior to forecasted degradation of road conditions. This will allow for DODDS to stage school busses. The IOC will also contact tenant units in addition to updating the website, phone recordings, command channel and AFN.

2-Hour Delays: Garrison needs this time to clear the roads and parking lots. Personnel will report 2 hours later than their normally scheduled reporting time. School busses will pick up children from their bus stops two hours after their normal time. Only those personnel who are part of key and essential functions may drive on post. Functions include snow removal crews, guard force, limited dining facility, and emergency services. Safety Weather and road conditions vary in our area. Use your best judgment and know the hazards along your route. When in doubt, don’t drive. DOD Civilians will not lose pay when the Command directs a delay, early release or closure. Affected work time will be accounted for as administrative leave IAW DODI 1400.25-M Road conditions: GREEN, Driving is OK, no hazards; AMBER, Drive with caution. Driving conditions are hazardous due to reduced visibility, snowfall , or other weather phenomena is forecasted or is occurring. RED, Only mission essential travel; Driving conditions are hazardous. Mission Essential and Emergency government vehicles only. BLACK, Only emergency travel. Driving conditions are extremely dangerous at any speed – Roads are closed. Emergency only for Government Vehicles

Customs pamphlet eases holiday mail rush Mailing packages stateside from Europe involves many prohibitions, restrictions and import duty rules. U.S. personnel can avoid the pitfalls by getting the "International Mail Imports" pamphlet from a military customs office. Banned products include canned meats, pâté, salami, sausage and soup mixes containing meat. It is also illegal to mail handguns, alcoholic beverages and a whole list of other items to the United States. Other articles may need special import permits. A customs declaration must be fixed to every parcel going to the States and falsifying it is a federal crime. The International Mail Imports pamphlet is available at any military customs office and online.

Educational Scholarships Available The Vilseck Community and Spouses Club (VCSC) wants to help you go to college. Scholarships are available for graduating high school seniors, spouses/dependents of active duty military and DOD civilians. The application deadline is March 16. Seeking Emergency Placement Care Providers The children in the USAGG need you. The Emergency Placement Care (EPC) Program trains individuals to become 24 hour providers for at risk children. The community is in need of more providers as the number of children in imminent danger increased due to the deployment rotation of family members. The training you receive will last you a

Christmas donations needed for children For the last 4 years, Mr. Garcia has been able to make Christmas a special day for children that suffer the ravages of cancer, thanks for the support of the Grafenwoehr community. Donations including toys, stuffed animals, candy and wrapping paper for ages from newborn to 18 years are needed again this year for patients at the Cancer Clinic in Erlangen. With the permission of the parents, Mr. Garcia will take photos and will send everyone who donates a copy of the event to see how your generous contribution made a difference in the life of a child. Volunteers needed at the USO Grafenwoehr If you'd like to help your USO, the military and their family members, come by the USO center in Main Post5 Bldg. 150 and sign up to volunteer. VFW seeks Christmas support for orphans Members of VFW Post 9334 conduct a toy and clothing drive for the Orphans in the Czech Republic each year and are assisted by the Torch Club Dragons and the Keystone Tigers from the Netzaberg Youth Center. Persons who are interested in contributing to our Annual Christmas Program can sign for cards, purchase a present, and return it to the Netzaberg Youth Center or the Vilseck Commissary starting 1 November 11. Our youth clubs will wrap the present for you if it is not gift wrapped. Once the card and gift is returned you may keep the picture as a memoir. We support the Detsky Domov Orphanage and the Most Baby Clinic. There will be two collection points. A food safety class required for food service personnel who prepare or serve food to the public within the Graf/Vilseck community. Certification is intended for individuals involved in fund raising food sales such as, boss, FRG, clubs or bazaars, and also to CYS personnel such as CYPA’s. FAST Class 17 – 27 Jan: Rose Barracks (Vilseck) Education Center, Bldg. 223, 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST) provides Soldiers with instruction in reading, mathematics, and language skills and is an excellent tool to prepare Soldiers to raise their GT score. Dental Assistant Training The Grafenwoehr Dental Clinic and the American Red Cross are offering a Dental Assistant Training Program beginning in Feb. 2012. The program is designed for those without dental assisting experience and requires 62 hours of in-class

Price of school lunch to increase Beginning 3 Jan: School lunch prices at all Department of Defense Education Activity schools Outside the

Continental United States (OCONUS) will increase. The last price increase was a $0.10 per meal in 2004. The new increase is $.35 per full price meal making the new prices starting $2.40 for Elementary Students and $2.55 for Secondary Students. Families qualifying for the Free and Reduced Meal Program will not be impacted by the meal cost increases. The cost of a reduced-price meal will remain unchanged at 40 cents per meal. Caroling through the Old Town of Nuremberg. We will sing well-known American and German Christmas songs in the beautiful inner courtyards of the Old Town, in the church of St. Sebald and at the Partner Cities market. Song books and candles are available for purchase for a small fee (1-2 €). Proceeds are donated to the Federation of German-American Clubs student exchange program. Afterwards, you are invited to join us in a glass of Glühwein or punch in the parish hall of the Church of Our Lady. Children are very welcome (even in strollers). Waldweihnacht = Christmas in the Forest 17 Dec: 5 p.m., in Sorghof (part of 92249 Vilseck).

This very special event starts at the "Dorfplatz" (yard next to the Sorghof church) in the center of Sorghof. Parking is available there. Warm your hands at the crackling fire while you listen to a brass band play. Then visitors and shepherds will walk 300 meters to the nearby forest in a torchlight procession, following the "Star of Bethlehem" which shows them the way. Here they will find a live "Weihnachtskrippe" (nativity scene), wooden booths with food and refreshments, and another big crackling bonfire. The live nativity scene is very unique because it's really "live", i.e. with real animals and a real baby in the manger. When the procession has arrived, the actors will perform a musical about the search of St. Joseph and St. Mary for shelter. It's a real pleasure to listen to these great voices. Christmas Songs in English language is also a contribution to all American guest. As the Waldweihnacht draws to a close after about one hour, Christmas sparklers will be passed out (or bring your own) to the kids and the whole scene will end in a "big sparkle"! At the wooden huts you will find various food and refreshments, such as "Glühwein" = mulled wine (comes in "strong" and "stronger"), "Kinderpunsch" (without alcohol), "Dotsch" (potato pancake), "Hirtengulasch" (Shepherd's goulash), and of course "Bratwurst". All proceeds will go to local charity events. No entry fee!

The Christmas market in Altötting's baroque main square - in its center the small Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) - is considered one of the most beautiful by many. There are daily performances at 5 and 7 p.m. on the stage, on Saturday and Sunday also at 2 p.m. The German Nikolaus visits the market every day at 5 p.m. Every church also has nativity scenes (Basilika St. Anna, the Stiftspfarrkirche, and St. Michael), and the Rathaus (city hall) contains one with figures in traditional Bavarian clothing. When you visit there, don't miss the stunningly beautiful pilgrimage church (in English, click on the Union Jack at top right to change language). At the Kapellplatz / Chapel Square alone you'll find FOUR different churches that you can visit.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m., you can watch the "Engelesspiel" where 24 "angels" appear and turn the Rathaus into a giant advent calendar. This market also features daily musical performances, and a special program for children (baking with kids, puppet theater) at the Children's Christmas Market on Moritzplatz and Martin-Luther-Platz.

At the market, you can watch how genuine "Baumkuchen" (a type of layered, grilled cake) or chocolate is made.

Bamberg 24 Nov. - 23 Dec: 96047 Bamberg on Maximiliansplatz. The origins of Bamberg's Christmas Market date back to the beginning of the 19th century. Nowadays, around 50 vendors sell a variety of Christmas articles along with typcial delicacies from the region, such as Lebkuchen (gingerbread cookies) and Früchtebrot (German fruit cake).

stalls are in this "Budenstadt", offering everything from decorations to scrumptious foods. The grand opening takes place on Fri., 26. This lovely Christmas market in gorgeous Berchtesgaden attracts many visitors each year with a large number of activities: traditional arts and crafts stalls, rides in horse-drawn carriages, an "Engerlstudio", a Christmas tree labyrinth, a petting zoo,live nativity plays, guided tours of the historical city center, a tower brass band playing on top of the bell tower of the Stiftskirche (church), and much more. A very unique event is the visit of the "Buttnmandl" and "Kramperl" on 05 and 06 December, as well as the "Böllerschießen" (gun salutes) in the week before Christmas Eve. Burglengenfeld 19 & 20 Dec: 1 - 5 p.m.: in 93133 Burglengenfeld at the Burg (castle), Erich-Gottfried-Heuser-Straße1 The 1200-year-old Wittelsbacher castle "zu Lengfeld" is the second-largest complete castle in Bavaria. Its tiltyard becomes populated with quaint wooden huts where you can find lovely, handcrafted wares. At 2 p.m., the Castellan expects all visitors at the

"Pulverturm" (magazine tower) for a bit of jousting. Guests interested in history can join a guided tour of the castle at 3 p.m. (in German), followed by telling of historical tales at 4 p.m. the "Zehrgaden" (kitchen garden). Or stop by the castle's "Wehrgang" (wall walk) where an exhibition of historical furniture takes place. Its name refers to an old Teutonic legend: In pre-Christian time, the Teutons believed in a rider who would take care of a deceased person’s soul. While the Teutons were afraid of this mystic figure, people in the middle ages changed their attitude towards this rider, eagerly expecting him to appear because – according to the legend - he changed from a wild, rude man to a friendly messenger who brings gifts to all men on earth. A painting of this famous rider can be seen on the facade of the city hall. But on several occasions he ―becomes alive‖ again.
