Introduction Simsim is a flowering plant which is cultivated for its edible seeds

which grow in pods It has one of the highest oil contents of any seed Simsim seed is

considered to be the oldest oilseed crop known to man Simsim is very drought-

tolerant plant with an ability to grow where most Crops fail Simsim ranks second in

importance to groundnuts Simsim is predominantly grown in the North and North

Eastern parts of Uganda and a considerable amount is also grown in Eastern Uganda

NB Uganda is the fifth largest producer of simsim in the world and is only second to

Sudan in Africa It is estimated that Uganda produces about 170000 metric tons

annually

Simsim Varieties in Uganda white black and brown In Uganda it is the white and

brown types that are grown with the SERRA and Sesi-1 species dominating Low productivity of sesame oil is mainly attributed to low levels of

mechanization that make it hard to produce at a commercial level In addition threshing and drying seeds on bare ground mixes in the soil which

makes it difficult to separate as the seeds are very small This leads to low quality and losses as buyers do not want to buy such produce Simsim is

mainly grown in two seasons March-April and August-September sesame can reach a height of 20-60 inches depending on a number of factors It

thrives best in well-drained fertile soils of medium texture and neutral pH-low tolerance for salt The seeds should be planted 075-15 inches deep

Its extensive system of feeder roots makes sesame drought resistant

Harvest It is important to harvest when the seeds are very dry as this makes storage and extraction of oil easy

Seeds should be stored in a very dry room with moisture content of less than six per cent as moist conditions can cause the oil in seeds to become

rancid A fully dried up seed contains 50-55 per cent oil To minimize damage and loss great care should be taken during harvesting as damaged

Price The price of sesame oil has been rising gradually due to increasing demand A 237ml bottle of roasted oil goes for UGX20000 unrefined oil

of 236ml is at UGX25800 while a 376ml bottle of small-mill sesame oil is at UGX26800 Although the focus by government and farmers is not oil

production this way of adding value to sesame will facilitate growth of an industry and also earn income for both farmers and government

Different Ways in Which to Consume Simsim

Simsim can be used in different ways as follows

bull It can be eaten raw or roasted

bull Its paste can added to smoked meat fish and some types of vegetables to make delicious soup Some people prefer to apply the paste to bread

instead of margarine

bull Simsim seed balls made by mixing it with sugar is a favorite among children

bull Bakers add simsim seeds to bread and the top of hamburgers to give them a rich nutty taste

bull Extraction of oil out of the seeds

Health Benefits of Simsim Simsim enhances well-being because it is rich in a number of trace minerals and other food nutrients which translate

into tremendous health benefits

bull Simsim contains calcium which helps build bones enhance bone density and lower the risk of Osteoporosis

Figure 2 Source httpagmisinfotradeugandacomreportpricecomparison the prices of simsim have increased both wholesale and retail from 1st January 2018 to 30th April 2018 Wholesale has increased by UGX 210 (UGX4350 to UGX4140) and also retail increased by UGX 300 (UGX4650 to UGX4950) The main cause of

this increment in prices is because of the high demand both locally and internationally
