Page 1 WEEKLY BULLETIN — 18 September 2015 From the Headmaster On Monday evening a large number of Reigatians including former pupils, parents, staff and friends of Reigate Grammar School attended a House of Commons River Terrace Reception hosted by Crispin Blunt MP for Reigate on behalf of the RGS Foundation. This was a splendid evening which raised awareness of the work of the RGS Foundation—particularly the Changing Lives bursary campaign—and also to celebrate the School’s 340 th anniversary. I was pleased to be able to share the wide range of pupil success stories and potential plans for RGS as we look towards our 350 th birthday in 2025. The highlight of the evening was a memorable violin solo performed by recent leaver, Karolina Csathy, who goes up to Cambridge to read Music this term. Karolina spoke eloquently and emotionally about the impact receiving an RGS bursary has had on her life. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the ongoing work of the RGS Foundation should contact Mr Sean Davey, Development Director, via [email protected]. The RGS Annual Open Morning on Saturday 3 October is now exactly two weeks away and I am very much looking forward to seeing students in school, looking smart, proud of their uniforms and helping in some way. I am quite sure you are all aware that tomorrow sees the start of the 2015 Rugby World Cup which is being hosted in England. The Godfrey Searle Choir and students from RGS have been invited to sing at the Guildhall in London on Monday 21 September at the official welcoming ceremony for the Welsh team which is, of course, a great honour. In addition, as part of the celebrations, the Old Reigatians Rugby Club has organised an event for around 200 local primary school boys and girls helped by approximately 40 RGS Fifth Form students. The event—an opportunity to demonstrate real community spirit—is on Wednesday 23 September at the ORRFC, Park Lane, Reigate from 11.30am-3.30pm. Thank you to everyone who has made this happen. Whilst on the subject of rugby I am delighted to share with you that our own Mr Doug Cooper has recently been appointed Head Coach of the London and South East U18 Boys’ Divisional Rugby Squad. Having been Head Coach of the Surrey U18 team for the last four years this was the next natural step on the ladder for Mr Cooper and we are delighted for him and of course for RGS too. The divisional process is where the England U18 County Squads are selected. Well done Mr Cooper. George Beglan and Jasmin Hull have been published in the September issue of the respected periodical Weather, the magazine of the Royal Meteorological Society, with their article on the RGS Weather Club high altitude balloon launch earlier this year. We will shortly be receiving copies for the RGS Library, but in the meantime, you may access the article by clicking on the image to the left.

From the headmaster… continued

The CCF has been busy already this year: Fourth Form cadets attended Longmoor Camp to undergo Recruit Training consisting of basic drill movements, looking after and maintaining uniform and boots and learning first aid. Cadets have also undertaken Kayak Training in North Wales. Congratulations to Charlie Henzi, Jonny Coyle, Andrew Mailer, Gemma Haward and Anna Palacci for passing their 1-Star BCU paddling award; and well done to all cadets on their 2-Star and 3-Star training. Well done. The 1st VII Netball team (pictured below) is also off to a flying start this term. The girls took part in the Surrey Fast Five tournament where, as last year's tournament winners, several teams chose to use a 'power-play' against them, counting as double points! The RGS girls faced a challenging set of matches and finished in fourth place having had a great time improving fitness and team cohesion—Well done to the whole team. Student Successes Jeevan Dhillon received a trophy from Priory Cricket Club for Best Team

Player of the Year with the best stats in bowling and has also gained a merit in Grade 3 Classical Guitar.

Lily Grant, in the Surrey Combined County Athletics Championships, won bronze, setting two new PB’s in the Hurdles and High Jump and placing her 13th in the UK pentathlon U13 rankings.

Owen Knowles has won the Young Sportsperson of the Year 2015 for Reigate & Banstead and goes through to the Surrey Sports Awards in December.

Theo Lewis (pictured below) won the Surrey County Pentathlon Competition achieving a PB of 1743, placing him fourth in the UK and first in Surrey in this event.

Lauren Purves has been accepted into the Surrey County Youth Orchestra (violin).

Madeleine Withers has been accepted into the Surrey County Youth Jazz Orchestra (saxophone).

Finally, I am very much looking forward to seeing many of you at the Run Reigate Half Marathon and 10k on Sunday 20 September. Any parents running should look out for the friendly RGS student faces at the water stations along the route which are being manned by the four RGS Houses. Furthermore, after their debut at Run Reigate 2014, RGS Fifth Form student band Outside the Box (Ben Silverman, Milo Stephens, Sam Molyneux and Daanish Smellie) will again be performing under the RGS gazebo by the café in the park from 9:30-10:00 and 10:30-11:00 and would love to see as many supporters there as possible. Do email me direct via [email protected] with any further student updates and items of news. Best Wishes, Shaun Fenton, Headmaster

House Art Competition

Final Reminder Entries for the House Art Competition should be handed in to Mrs Burns by Friday 25 September in

order to be displayed on Open Morning (Saturday 3 October). Details from the Heads of House.

Important information about Music Lessons Lesson Timetabling: Instrumental and singing lessons are well underway

now. Please would parents read and sign the terms and conditions and return them to the Music Department as soon as possible? These terms and conditions allow the considerable number of lessons which take place at RGS every week to run smoothly. We are grateful if parents do not ask for bespoke lesson times or avoidance of certain academic subjects as regrettably we are not able to honour these requests. Students in the Fifth and Sixth Forms and those who learn more than one instrument (including voice) may be considered for a fixed lesson time.

Communication with music teachers: Whilst it is highly desirable and extremely helpful for

parents and visiting music teachers to communicate with each other, parents should not give music teachers’ contact details to students. Visiting teachers will use school email accounts if they wish to contact students direct but students are not allowed to send messages to visiting teachers’ private email or phone numbers. Please remind students to check their school email every day to ensure that messages from their music teachers regarding changes to lesson times are read.

Many thanks for your understanding. Strength & Conditioning Coaching All students welcome, sessions are run by

Tom Archer in the Dance Studio at the following times: Monday 07:15-08:15 (Open) Tuesday 13:20-14:10 (First to Fourth Forms) Wednesday 07:15-08:15 (Open) Wednesday 13:20-14:10 (First to Fourth Forms Wednesday 16:00-17:00 (Fifth & Sixth Forms) Thursday 13:20-14:10 (Fifth & Sixth Forms) Thursday 16:00-17:00 (Fifth & Sixth Forms) Friday 13:20-14:10 (Second to Fourth Forms)

Parents’ Online Payment System Following the launch of the Parents’ Online Payment

system at the beginning of this term, each week we will let you know which school trips are available to pay. The first trip which is already on the Payment System is the Belize 2016 trip. If your child is attending this trip, please log into the system and make your first payment. Please email [email protected] if you have any queries.

Bags We would like to thank all students for their co-

operation with our new bag policy which sees the school looking much tidier now. We will be installing some more bag racks near the Ballance building later this term and putting backs on the racks near the minibus park to protect bags from the weather.

We have repeatedly asked students not to put their

bags on the ground in front of a full bag rack, or try to squeeze their bags on where there is no room—they should find an alternative rack instead, which usually means walking just a few extra paces to a rack with space. Bags are being lost and it is almost always because they are either left on the ground or they fall off bag racks.

Also, students should not use bags in school which do

not close securely and are therefore left open on bag racks, causing damage to or loss of property.

Finally, a reminder that bags and belongings must not

be left at school overnight, unless in a locker. All students in the First to Third Forms have been allocated a locker and there are spare ones available if older students would like one – in which case they should speak to their form tutor.

Parking, Drop Offs, Collection and our Neighbours Please follow these simple guidelines when driving in

and around school, dropping children off etc. Students should not be dropped off at the front of

school unless there is a valid reason such as injury. Students should be dropped off a little way from

school for example along Blackborough Road or Reigate Road to walk in and help to reduce peak time congestion.

Respect our neighbours by not blocking driveways, crossings or entrances to homes or other establishments—Reigate Parish Infant School is particularly keen that their entrance is not used as a drop off zone at any time.

Macmillan Cancer Support: 25 September Whether students have been inspired by the Great British Bake Off or are just a genius with a whisk, we'd love it if you could encourage your child to create some tasty offerings to sell on Friday 25 September as

part of the national coffee morning. Please name your containers so that we can return them to you. Thank you—on behalf of the Charity Committee.
