Principal’s Note

Hello and welcome to my Principal’s Note for Week 5.

It is hard to believe that we are half way through Term 1.

The weeks are quickly slipping away at what seems to be

a rapid rate. Term 2 will be here before we know it.

As always, it has been a pleasure to visit classrooms and

observe the learning experiences and interactions which

have been evident throughout the first five weeks of this

term. Student engagement is currently the best I have

ever seen for this time of the year. Well done to all stu-

dents and staff for making every minute count. With five

weeks of Term 1 remaining, it will be great to see our

current school climate maintained through until 3pm Fri-

day of the last week.

Attendance

The 2017 School Attendance Target is 95%, for Week

4 our school’s attendance rate was

96.7%.

Week 4 Attendance Data: Prep –

96.92%, Yr 1/2 – 94.29%, Yr 2/3 –

93.85%, Yr 4 – 97.33%. Yr 5/6 – 100%,

Yr 7-10 – 98.18%.

Highest attendance for Week 4: Year

5/6 100%!

Regular attendance leads to enhanced

achievement and learning progress. Let’s

ensure all students attend school to reap

the rewards of consistent participation

and engagement. Unless your child is ill,

it is expected that your child will be at school learning

every day of the school year.

Absence

Next week, all state school principals including myself,

will be attending the State Principals’ Conference from

Wednesday to Friday at the Gold Coast. In my absence

Mrs McLean (Wed – Thur) and Mrs Nolan (Fri) will be

Officer in Charge.

Well Done

Well done to students on their recent representation of

our school and district at the South West Swimming Tri-

als this week in Charleville.

Thank You

P&C, for your ongoing commitment and hard work

for our school and students.

Mrs Gray, for your ongoing commitment to providing

Religious Instruction lessons for our students each week.

Staff, for continuing to go above and beyond each

and every day for our school.

Enjoy the weekend!

Remember, “The Surat State School way is to commit

to our learning, strive for excellence and succeed in

all that we do.”

Enjoy the weekend!

Principal

Playgroup

Our school is hosting a community playgroup on Mon-

days from 9.00-11.00. Playgroup is open to children from

0-5 years of age. At playgroup, parents and caregivers

spend relaxed time with their children making friends and

support networks. Meanwhile children develop physical-

ly, socially, emotionally and intellectually, as they discov-

er new experiences, gain self-confidence and make new

friends too.

For more information, please contact Mrs Sally Broad-

head via the School’s Office.

RREAP Funding

The Rural and Remote Education Access Program (RREAP) helps

schools and school communities improve the educational outcomes

and opportunities of students who are disadvantaged because of

their geographical isolation so that students' learning outcomes

match those of other students. RREAP funds are available to as-

sist Queensland state schools and school communities to support

and enrich a curriculum that is appropriate for the educational needs

of geographically isolated primary and secondary school stu-

dents. Community-based organisations within the Maranoa Re-

gional Council, working in partnership with RREAP schools to pro-

vide extra-curricular programs to school students, are eligible to

apply for RREAP funding. Please contact your local school for in-

formation about funding & application guidelines.

All Welcome

The Arts – Years 4 - 8

‘Don't think about it

Just move your body

Listen to the music

Sing, oh, ey, oh

Just move those left feet

Go ahead, get crazy

Anyone can do it

Sing, oh, ey, oh.’

That’s exactly what we have been doing this term in the Arts. Years

4 to 8 have all been focusing on Dance so if your child has been

coming home and ‘dancing in the street’ than this would possibly be

the reason why!

Year 4 have been all about dancing to celebrations so that we can

‘celebrate, good times, come on!’ with the class learning their perfor-

mance piece over the past two weeks. If you have a Year 4 dancer

be sure to ask for a demonstration of their celebration dance.

Year 5/6 have been all about symmetry in dance focussing on three

types of symmetry; reflectional, transitional and rotational. We start

choreographing this week and as Year 5/6 will be reflecting, transi-

tioning and rotating with one another there shouldn’t be anyone

saying ‘I’ll keep dancing on my own.’

Up in the high school, Year 7/8 are delving into dance cultures. Spe-

cifically, we are studying the dance style of ‘Stepping’ incorporating

plenty of stomping, stamping and body percussion. So if you see the

Year 7/8s, make sure you tell them that ‘you can dance, you can

jive, having the time of your life’ and we will keep watch to see if any

Dancing Queens (or kings for that matter) emerge.

All we know in the Arts this term is that ‘I feel better when I’m danc-

ing, yeah yeah…..’
