Licensing cyclists wont ease pain of

being hit by vehiclesA

fter a spate of fatal bike accidents NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay has fl oated the idea of forcing all pushbike riders to

carry a special bike licence. He said bad cyclists are a part of the problem by running red lights, crossing lanes and being aggressive towards motorists. Putting aside the rights and wrongs of the idea of a bike licence, Stacks Law Firm specialises in providing legal assistance to victims of vehicular accidents, and their lawyers meet many cyclists injured in collisions with vehicles. They have yet to meet a motorist injured by a cyclist. Indeed, offi cial statistics show a steady increase in the number of bicycle injuries and in 2013 fatalities doubled on the previous year.I am seeing more and more people who are victims of cycling injuries seeking some sort of fi nancial compensation to help them get on with their lives. Many need compensation to help them receive ongoing medical treatment or make their homes suitable for wheelchairs, said Stacks specialist Kel Connelly. Cyclists injured in a motor vehicle collision have rights to compensation, even if they cant identify the vehicle at fault. Cyclists dont need to be registered and insured. Claims must be submitted within certain time limits so its wise to seek expert legal advice quickly.There is anecdotal evidence that anger is growing among some motorists that they have to share public roads with cyclists. Cyclists cite tradies utes, small trucks, vans and SUVs many with bull bars as the worst offenders for abusing bike riders. Drivers say their frustration centres on cyclists running red lights, swerving in and out of traffi c, and not being visible, especially at night. The reality is that cyclists can lawfully use public roads but they do so without the protection of big hunks of metal around them and without seat belts or air bags. While cyclists should obviously obey the rules of the road to avoid accidents, where there is an accident between a cyclist and a motor vehicle it is the cyclist who faces catastrophic injuries or death and not the other way around. We should be doing all we can to make cycling safer, and that means more bike paths and safety programs aimed at educating road users, not more bureaucracy such as bike licences. THIS YEARS version of a local festival which attracts nationally and internationally renowned musicians to one of the Tweeds villages will have more free and family focused events than ever in an effort to bring classical music to the masses.

The Tyalgum Music Festival, which has been an annual event since 1991 and is scheduled for the weekend of September 11-13, is in its second year of operation under Artistic Directors Anna McMichael and Eve Newsome and has recently been named as one of four nominees in the national Art Music Awards for Regional Excellence.

Ms McMichael said it has always been their intention to create more community involvement in the festival which has gained a signifi cant reputation in the music world.

Our goal is to create a local buzz around the festival and get the message out that theres something there for everyone, said Ms McMichael.

The highlight of these efforts will be on the Saturday of the festival when we close off the main street and create a musical happening involving many of the participating artists.

The theme of the event is the Pied Butcher Bird and artists will be performing pieces imitating or inspired by their call.

The street party will also involve a sound bubble an enormous infl atable music box fi lled with white balloons in which musicians will trigger lights to bring the space alive as well as markets, nature walks, buskers and art exhibitions.

There will also be a special family concert on Sunday morning featuring some of the festivals top artists and priced at just $10 for adults and a gold

coin donation for children, followed by a musical ball game on the oval where a giant 2m musical ball which activates on contact is passed between teams.

The festival has always had a lot of local support and it is always an enjoyable time in the village and this is an aspect of the festival we really wanted to grow, said Ms McMichael.

Inside the newly renovated Tyalgum Hall the main events of the festival will feature Australias top vocal ensemble The Song Company, internationally renowned accordionist James Crabb, Queenslands premier chamber orchestra the Camerata of St Johns, the Lev Vlassenko Young Virtuosi Piano Competition and the ensemble Ironwood which plays baroque, romantic and classical pieces on string and keyboard instruments from the time the music was written.
