19th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 13, 2017

Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. — Psalm 85:12

On this feast day, AUGUST 15, we celebrate our belief that Mary, the Mother of God, was taken to heaven, body and soul, after her earthly life. Because of Mary’s central place in God’s eternal plan for salvation, her body did not undergo corruption. Mary’s assumption offers us a glimpse of the promises made to us when we were

baptized into Christ. We are given the promise that we, too, will enter heaven, body and soul, when Christ returns at the end of time. The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is a Holy day of obligations this year.

MASS SCHEDULE Vigil Mass at 6:00 PM

Feast Day Masses: 6:30 & 8:30 AM; 6:00 PM

SMM FEAST DAY CELEBRATION UPDATE On Sunday, July 23, we celebrated the Feast Day of our Patroness, St. Mary Magdalen (actual feast is July 22). At this time, we'd like to thank the following individuals, ministries & organizations who helped make our Jazz Brunch such a success: Altar Society for providing special flowers for the Church & Reception; CYO for set-up; KC Ladies Auxiliary for serving drinks; Mark Schluter for providing musicians; Parish Unity Committee for helping with hospitality, serving food, cutting the cake & assisting with clean-up; and Numerous parishioners including Fr. Chris, for assistance with serving drinks & helping with clean-up. Over 125 people celebrated and seemed to enjoy the great music, including an impromptu performance by Tony Manzella on the trumpet, dancing with Fr. Bob, as well as visiting with Fr. Chris and our SMM Family! It was a wonderful celebration!!!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Roman Canon, called Eucharistic Prayer I, is probably seldom heard in your parish. Some priests will choose it for at least one of the Masses of Christmas, or the Easter Vigil. Such sparing use of this prayer seems strange, especially since it was the only Eucharistic Prayer in the Latin Rite for many centuries, from as long ago as 500 right up to 1970. In 1965, the vernacular language was approved for the canon of the Mass. Almost immediately, some experimental texts began to surface in the Netherlands, and priests began to use new Dutch texts without permission. By 1966, Pope Paul VI had set up a committee to consider whether or not it was time to approve such experimentation and extend it to non-Dutch churches. No sooner had the committee been formed than other individuals copied the Dutch by just plunging on ahead. The Dutch bishops had approved the use of the new prayers nationwide in 1968, and Flemish bishops in Belgium quickly agreed. By then, German translations of the Dutch prayers were in wide use, and before long nearly one hundred Eucharistic Prayers, all unapproved, were in circulation in France. The Vatican heard the widespread desire for more variety in Eucharistic Prayer forms, and, with the pope’s approval, the process of creating new official prayers began. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A PRAYER FOR EVERY FAMILY by St. John Paul II

God, from whom all fatherhood in heaven and earth de-scends, Father, who are Love and Life, ensure that every human family on earth shall become, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, "born of woman," and through the Holy Spirit, the source of divine charity, a true shrine of life and love for the generations which are always renewing them-selves. Ensure that Your grace shall guide the thoughts and the works of spouses toward the good of their families and of all families in the world. Ensure that the young gen-erations shall find firm support in the family for their hu-manity and their growth in truth and love. Ensure the love, reinforced by the grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony shall show itself to be stronger than any weakness and every crisis through which our families pass at times. Amen.

Prayer for our Men and Women in Military Service

O Prince of Peace, we humbly ask Your protection for all our men and women in military service. Give them unflinching courage to defend with honor, dignity and devotion the rights of all who are imperiled by injustice and evil. Guard our churches, our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our factories, our buildings and all those within from harm and peril. Protect our land and its peoples from enemies within and without. Grant an early peace with victory founded upon justice. Instill in the hearts and minds of men and women everywhere a firm purpose to live forever in peace and good will toward all. Amen.
