Week Four: standing strong and living as an overcomer
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Matthew 16:30-20
“When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all
demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick”

the ability/strength/might to complete a given task
the right to use that power
Jesus’ advantage?•“There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.” Isaiah 11
•“The Word became flesh and came among us…” John 1
•“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used for his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” Philippians 2
INTERVIEW | DIAGNOSIS | PRAYER | STOP/RE-INTERVIEW | POST-PRAYER INSTRUCTIONS
The purpose of an interview is to determine the root cause of someone’s infirmity or sickness (Mark 9):•“What’s your name?” •“How can I pray for you?” •“How long have you had this condition?” •“Do you know the cause?” •“Why do you think you have this problem?” •“Do you have a doctor’s diagnosis?”• “Did someone cause this condition?” •“Have you forgiven him or her?” •“Did any significant or traumatic event happen to you within six months or a year of this condition starting?”
INTERVIEW | DIAGNOSIS | PRAYER | STOP/RE-INTERVIEW | POST-PRAYER INSTRUCTIONS
In light of the root cause, you pray differently for different things, as Jesus did (Luke 5):
•Psychosomatic issues—the main root of many illnesses •Natural causes—accidental injuries or carcinogens causing cancer •Genetic causes—generational curses/weaknesses•Demonic influences – afflicting spirits, possibly as a result of sin•Lifestyle issues—neglecting scriptural teaching regarding rest, diet, exercise, stress
Each root requires different a prayer method.

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Mark 8:22-25
• Assume healing must not be the Father’s will? No.• After interviewing the man and finding out the healing was partial and
incomplete, Jesus simply ministered again. • “What is going on?” • If after a while, the way you are praying is ineffective, change it. • How do you know when it is time to stop praying? You can stop when the
person is healed, when he or she wants you to stop, when the Holy Spirit tells you to stop, or when you are gaining no ground and receive no other way to pray.
INTERVIEW | DIAGNOSIS | PRAYER | STOP/RE-INTERVIEW | POST-PRAYER INSTRUCTIONS
If someone isn’t healed or partially healed:•Encourage them with a scripture or a teaching series to continue to build their faith – do not condemn them•Encourage them to “Keep on asking/seeking/knocking”
If they are healed:•Tell them to thank God•Tell someone what happened •Might need to change lifestyle

Reminders:•Ministry is spiritual warfare•No one in the Bible ever prayed for healing with the words, “If it be your will.”•We should not beg God for healings.•Remind God of the person’s merit for healing/deliverance.•We shouldn’t pray long, flowing prayers void of coming to the point of command. •You are not commanding God to do what you say. You are commanding the body to respond because you are an ambassador of the king.•We should not give up
